LONG SERVICE POET'S CORNER A FACE IN THE CROWD (by Maria Heiser) It is a sunny afternoon in late September, as I wait on a busy street here in the city.... O, yes, I was here many times before.... I do remember.... How often I waited with cold and wet feet just standing here.... full of self pity. .. Why am I still waiting? I know, I lost my son, my boy.... why can't I go home?.... I know, he is gone... my love and my joy. The sun is still shining warm and bright, but once again I will wait. .. maybe this time I can see his face, here is no place for him, to hide... or did I really come too late? A school bus is just driving by, filled with happy, laughing children... O, yes, my boy, was once a child.... but now, he is gone.... and I became a pilgrim... I have been searching every city, every town.... but I can't find him anywhere.... I wish I could hide my face behind the mask of a clown, then people, could not see my tears and stare. .. Suddenly, my blood stops running in my veins.... I see a young man, walking across the street My heart begins to ache in pain but I am lamed. .. I cannot lift my feet.... He does not turn around, before he reaches the other side I want to scream and call his name... but maybe... I have no more this right. I told him to leave.... I have no more claim... He did not see me, among all those people here, but I saw his face.... it will be carved in my mind. He did not smile... his eyes were filled with tears.... maybe, his pain of loneliness really made him blind.... An argument, between mother and son cut like a sword.... now into my life ... He is gone... and nothing can be done... I have to learn to wait.... and so live and survive... Maybe, the day will come and he will come home again, until that moment, I will wait.... and when he opens the door... forgotten will be all sorrow and pain and we will be. .. a family, once more....
