On The Sidelines With Dick Pabbltt Attended the Barrington-Joliet Catholic game last Saturday. It was quite a ball game indeed. The Broncos took advantage of mistakes by Joliet early in the gamfc and ran up a quick 14 too score. It was a physical game, and the Broncos came up on the snort end of it, as they lost two fine linemen, who may be through for the season. • In the game that may decide the Class 4 A title Harrington hosts the Rockford East "E-Rabs" this Saturday at 1:30 at Barrington. The Broncos held on in the Joliet game to win by a score of 28 to 20. Bill Blankenhorn the A.D. at McHenry and Coach Bill Day were also in attendance. '* Congratulations are in order for George Hansen, John Dix and Bob Eppel, Warrior football players who were named to the Elgin Courier All Area Team. This has to be an honor, when considering the number of conference in the Elgin Area. GLENBARD WEST WAS DEFEATED IN THE PLAYOFFS. Haven't heard from that certain official in the area about his pick, but all in fun, he does call a good baseball game. One happy fella these days is Coach Bill Day. His former pupil Ken Anderson of Cincinnati broke two National Football Records last Sunday. He threw 16 successive complete passes over a two gapie span, and also threw for 20 out of 22 against Pittsburgh Sunday, beating records by Joe Namath and Len Dawson. Ken is from Batavia where Day formerly coached, prior to coming to McHenry. The McHenry County Ail Star Football Team is something to behold. Just take a gander at the size of the squad. In gathering all the stat's from the coaches it was almost unbelievable. The schools range in size from Class 1-A to Class 4-A. The credentials of some of these young lads in respect to the caliber of their competition would make college coaches come running to the county. All the schools in the county can be proud indeed of the accomplishments of their football players. We hope in future years we can get all county newspapers to participate in picking a team. A meeting of all the coaches to make the selections is more worthwhile, than sending in names, but until a better way is found, we will do it this way. The coaches appreciate the Plaindealer in their effort. From all reports the winter sport season at McHenry high is going to be as successful as the fall season. With both Cross Country and Football having banner seasons, and the outlook good for swimming, wrestling and basketball good this could be the year of the Warrior. A little bird tells me that coach Ludwig in basketball practice has to stand on a chair, to see his squad eye to eye. That must be a most pleasant moment for the Coach who stands over six feet himself. For one of the few times in history the Warriors look as if they will have the height that they have been lacking in past seasons. More on basketball next week. TAX FACTS Many people think that year end tax planning is just for big business or brokers, but the ordinary person can benefit from it too. Besides the ususal business aspects, such as depreciation and inventory purchases, there are many ordinary income and expense items which can be timed to give you a tax advantage. It may surprise you, but if you prepare your own return anyway you can sit down, by yourself, and in a very short time save some tax dollars. Here are some preliminary considerations: Do you plan to retire next year? Are you planning a largo contribution to your favorite charity? Are you going to move9 Do you have a big medical bill to pay ? Are your children ap proaching 19, graduating, getting full time work or get ting married ? Are you getting married or divorced9 These are just some of the things which have an income tax impact, and, which can be planned in such a way as to save you money. Here is how you do it Use last year's tax form and instructions as a guide. Take all of your known income and expense items for this year and total them up just like you would to fill out the tax return. Be sure and in the income you expect to get before the end of the year, and don't leave out deductible items you expect to take care of before the end of the year. Following last year's return and instructions, figure out what your tax will be on these items. Now take the items you still have the option of changing or delaying and figure the tax after the change or delay. For example: A large single con tribution that you planned to make next year, figure what "Think Safety Toy Shoppers Are Urged THANK YOU ! ! ! Toys are gilts of love, so choose them carefully, the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness is counseling shoppers on the eve of the 1974 toy buying season. As estimated 35,000 accidents involving toys are caused each year in Illinois, according to the Society, which has campaigned to eliminate unnecessary blindness in Illinois since its founding fifty-eight years ago. Most of these mishaps are > due to improper use of safe toys rather lhan routine use of unsafe ones, says Edgar T. Britton, executive director of the Illinois Society. "But" he adds, "there will always be elements of danger in the toybox, particularly danger to the eyes." "When you shop for toys," he advises, "l)<£on the lookout for such hazards a^: ' Elements which heat up; Fabric that is not flame retardant (check labels on masks, costumes, etc.); Parts that are easily broken or shattered; Straight or "T" pins, nails or spikes; will happen if you make it this year instead. Another example: If your daughter is getting married in November or December and you've supported her at school all year, if she files a joint return with her husband you will not be entitled to her exemption. If his income for the year is lower than yours as much as $400 tax difference could result (using maximum and minimum rates) between the value of her $750 exemption on your return and the value on his. Note: If he files a separate return you probably will be entitled to her exemption. Many people use tax planning to good advantage and, if you haven't already done it, now is a good time. The Internal Revenue Service has many free publications which can help in your tax planning. For example, the Farmer's Tax Guide, Tax Information on Selling Your Home, Tax In formation on Deductions for Homeowners, Your Exemp tions and Exemptions for Dependents, and over seventy- five more. They are available by calling your IRS office. There is toll- free telephone service all over your area. If while you are thinking taxes, a question arises, don't hesitate to call the IRS. This Winter don't YOU be left out in the Is Your Home Ready? Now is the time to make a complete check of your home for those long cold winter months ahead. About 800 kinds of toys have been removed from the market in recent years because of materials or design problems which make them hazardous as defined by law, Britton estimates. As a result, he says, toy manufacturers are paying more attention to safe design. However, Britton warns, it is still up to parents and other toy buyers to observe safety principals that will prevent inappropriate toys from falling into the hands of youngsters too young or inexperienced to use them properly. "When you do your Christ mas toy buying this year," he concludes, beware the toys that can injure or blind. Don't put tragedy in "$our child's toybox."
