Consumers' Corner , Amplifiers Federal Trade Commission has issued final regulations requiring manufacturers or distributors of amplifiers to tell consumers about the power output claims for amplifiers in advertising claims. The regulations cover power output claims for ampli fiers used in home entertain ment sets such as radios, record I players, tape players and com ponent audio amplifiers. Purpose of the regulations is to give con sumers uniform information they need before buying home enter tainment products. Until now, manufacturers have used numer ous testing techniques that have resulted in a variety of claims about power output. Consumers have been misled because they did not have adequate informa tion to use in making meaning ful comparisons among adver tisea equipment The new rules require that information be sub stantiated when claims are made concerning power output, power band, power frequency response, distortion capability or character- tisics of sound power amplifies otin equipment. Exemptions from the disclosure requirements will be permitted when a manufac turer's rated power output does not exceed 2 watts and this rated [power output is clearly disclosed in all claims and ads.
