Break away from the American Christmas turkey and pie holiday and use the tra ditions of other countries for celebration ideas. For tree trimming and party ideas, pick out dec orations and foods popular in one particular country. Take Mexico, for example. Serve paella, a rice and seafood dish, and sangrla, a wine and fruit mixture. For the children, hang a pinata, colorful paper ma- che animal stuffed with toys and candies. At mid night the children gather round and break the pi nata with sticks to collect the prizes. Trim the tree in colorful Mexican ornaments. Dolls, stars, and even jewelry, look bright and happy for the holidays. Or pick a country like Japan, and serve tempura. How about Greece, or Po land? A quick trip to the library for research will help set the stage for your international atmosphere. This system helps every one, especially the chil dren, learn about and un derstand the customs of others throughout the world, and what better way to convey the message of brotherhood and good will? K eep athletes on your gift list There must be an ath lete or sports-lover in the house. Chances are that more than one family member is interested in sports or has a favorite athletic ac tivity. Chances also are some one would like a Christmas present connected with a favorite sport. Little boys are often involved in all sorts of sports. Baseball equipment and football equipment are popular presents for boys. Some youngsters de velop a great interest in a particular sport, such as basketball, soccer or hockey, so don't forget about their athletic inter ests. Particularly important these days, don't leave out a little girl or young lady. Females of all ages are becoming increasingly in volved in athletics. So a gift involving a sport could be very appreciated by a girl. And for adults -- give accessories for bowling, tennis or golf, to name a few. Bring Santa to the community In the true holiday spir it, the message for us all is goodwill towards men. Many neighborhoods are taking this Idea seriously each year by gifting fam ilies and neighbors with a visiting Santa Claus. One man takes a few hffGrs on Christmas eve to don a Santa suit, and go from house to house for short spot visits tfo each family. 1 The reward Is tht look on th»* chlldre(i>r faces, and the satisfaction o' Santa sharing a little of himself with his friends. Kach year a n«*w neigh borhood father takes the role, and the spirit of brotherhood Is "brought kiome" to all.
