J PAGE S - PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER ^ 1974 EARL WALSH So I Hear It has long been the custom to burn trees after Christmas Now comes Arnold Rauen to break tradition and burn a beautiful evergreen three weeks before Christmas All we know is what we hear SPORTS EDITOR I Saving old eyeglasses and frames to be collected and glass reground for needy per sons has reached great proportions Wonder if there has been any action along this line in our community. If not. it would be a wonderful project We'd like to hear The energy crisis is bringing back windmills. There's plenty of wind in this country to keep them whirling. Had a pleasant surprise while in Springfield last week Turned on the TV at 6 p.m and who should be on but our old friend Lawrence Welk. Yep -- at six o'clock. While picking up a few calories at Bimbo's Sunday night, we met and had a nice visit with Tom and Nora Murphy of Volo. Tom said he is a friend of Fred Meyer, but we won't hold that against him. We learned that Tom grew up in Cub country in Chicago, but upon reaching the age of reason switched his allegiance to the Sox, r. He agrees with us that we should send Dick Allen to the Cubs to get even with them for that Ron Santo trade. With the dollar getting smaller all the time, the U.S. Treasury Department is considering going back to the two dollar bill. Might as well issue one for three bucks right away. Saw a large enclosed truck I a bled "Chicago Cougars' ' driving along Ringwood Road and wondered if they backed up the truck way out here We'll be watching for one marked "Chicago Bears". That Notre Dame-Southern Cal game was unbelievable. In the first half it looked like the California team didn't belong on the same field with the Irish Coach McKay must have fed his team some sugar lumps along with his pep talk between halves. They came out snortin' and swept away any thoughts of Notre Dame being named National Champions. The wedge of blockers for med by Southern Cal on kick-off returns was something to behold. And Notre Dame didn't have the speed in the backfield to defend against the whirlwind Cal bovs. After finishing in third place in the King-Korn basketball tournament, our Warriors start the regular season this weekend. Coach Ludwig leads his team to Zion Friday night for a real test in conference play. The Warriors will be home Saturday night to meet Grant in a non-conference tussle. ' 'And it usually is a tussle when those teams meet. Wayne and Mary Gaylord have a baby boy. The happy parents sent out one of the cleverist announcements we ever saw. Must call on them to see if we can hold that baby. Hope they have a rocking chair. TEN PIN QUEENS Mon . (STAFF PHOTO-W AYNE GAYLORD) Warriois 3rd In King Kom Tourney, Set Three Records By Dick Rabbitt The McHenry high Warriors of Coach Ken Ludwig came home with the third place trophy at the King Korn Tournament held at Sycamore After defeating the host school 77 to 49 on Friday, thev lost to the tourney winners West Aurora 72 to 50. Coming back strong Satur day night the mighty Warriors ran all over Belvidere to the tune of 102 to 85 setting three tourney records in the process. In the opening game against Sycamore the Warriors broke open the game midway in the 3rd period, and from that time on it was no contest. Steve Koerber, junior center, led the attack with 17 pts. followed by Tom Stark with 15. The Warriors shot a nifty 53 percent for an opening game hitting 33 of 62. They outrebounded the smaller Spartans 33 to 17. They also had 17 turnovers, several of them costing them baskets. Blackhawks 72 - Warriors 50 Led by Ron Hicks and Greg Bribers The Blackhawks of We^, Aurora proved too strong for the Warriors in the semi-final game on Saturday afternoon From the opening tipoff the Warriors knew they were going to have a rough time. With Hicks and Rogers dominating the offensive boards the Blackhawks raced into an 18 to 11 first quarter lead. At 7:15 of the second period the Warriors crept to within 6 on Zeller's basket, but the taller West team began to hit from inside and were on top at halftime 36 to 25. The third period for the Warriors was a nightmare. They couldn't buy a basket, and the Aurora defense had something to do with it. The locals were outscored 16 to 6 in the period and trailed 52 to 31 going into the final period. In the final period Terry Reilly's 9 pts kept the Warriors respectable, but they were outscored 20 to 19 and lost 72 to 50. The story of this game was West's shooting, defense and rebounding. The Hawks shot 30 of 52 for 52 percent, and outrebounded the Warriors 42 to 24. Their defense kept the Warriors off balance throughout the game. The Warriors did show some im provement as they had only 10 turnovers for the entire game. Warriors Blitz Bucs In the third place game, the Warriors were not to be denied With both teams playing racehorse basketball the Warriors jumped out in front at the quarter 24 to 20 The locals increased their margin to a 47-36 halftime bulge, as they had numerous layups as the Belvidere defense was caught napping In the third period Steve Koerber went to work for the Warriors The lanky junior center made shot after shot as the Warriors completely took control of the game and out- scored the Bucs 35 to 24 to lead 82 to 60 going into the final frame. Late in the fourth period Koerber hit for his 16th basket (a new tourney record > and the Warriors just played out the clock. Koerber led the attack with 35 pts followed by Marty Zeller with 16. Tommy Ludwig came off the bench and managed 13 pts in a winning cause. The Warriors shot an amazing 57 percent hitting 43 out of 75. They outrebound the Bucs 52 to 25, but again had 27 turnovers. The game resem bled a tennis match as both teams raced from one end of the floor to the other end. The Bucs shot 84 percent from the free throw line to keep them in the game, hitting 31 of 37. Tourney records set by the Warriors were as follows: Highest single game score 102 breaking the 85 held by DeKalb in 1967. Highest single game field goals by an indivi dual Steve Koerber 16 breaking the record held by West of Belvidere who had 15 in 1970. Highest number of field goals by a team for a single game 43 breaking the record held by DeKalb who had 34 in 1965 Coach Ludwig was quite pleased with the third place outcome. The Blackhawks of West Aurora defeated Rochelle in final game for their 5th straight championship. Coach Ludwig commented after the game. "We gained valuable experience in this tournament". He went on to say "We used 11 boys in the first two games, and the entire squad in the final " He felt that the team needs work on defense, and in making free throws. The Warriors proved that they know how to find the basket, the guards did an excellent job against the press, but they must eliminate the turnovers. They had 54 for the 3 games, but only 10 against the tough West Aurora five. Next on tap is the game at Zion Friday night, and then the home opener against an old rival Grant on Saturday night BOX SCORES McHENRY fg ft pf tp Zeller 3 0 3 6 Stark 6 3 2 15 Koerber 7 3 2 17 Kasprzyk 5 2 2 12 Ludwig K 2 0 5 4 Reilly 2 0 0 4 Ludwig T. 4 119 Meyer 2 115 Hertel 1113 Lund 10 0 2 Totals 33 11 17 77 SYCAMORE Johnson 3 0 16 Grace 10 12 Wilson 2 3 17 Vancil 5 0 3 10 Huntley 0 2 12 Copple 3 0 2 6 Olson 4 2 4 10 Johnson B. 3 0 2 6 Totals McH Sycamore McHENRY Zeller Stark Koerber 21 7 15 49 13 19 18 27 77 10 13 14 12 49 fg ft pf tp 1 0 2 2 3 3 4 9 8 2 4 18 Kasprzyk 0 0 1 0 Ludwig K 0 0 2 0 Stine 1 5 4 7 Reilly 2 5 1 9 Ludwig T 0 0 3 0 Hertel 0 1 0 1 Lund 2 0 2 4 Totals 17 16 23 50 WEST AURORA Soliz 4 2 3 10 Hailing 6 0 2 12 Hicks 10 5 3 25 Hunger 2 3 1 7 Rogers 5 0 3 10 Michels 0 2 0 2 Herget 0 0 3 0 Harris 2 0 3 4 Bryant 1 0 3 2 Total 29 12 21 72 McH 11 14 6 19 50 W A 18 18 16 20 72 McHENRY fg ft Pf tP Zeller 7 2 1 16 Stark 3 0 4 6 Koerber 16 3 2 35 Kasprzyk 3 2 4 8 Ludwig K. 3 0 3 6 Stine 2 2 2 6 Reilly 1 1 3 3 Ludwig T. 5 3 0 13 Meyer 3 0 4 6 Hertel 0 1 1 1 Lund 0 2 1 2 Totals 43 16 25 102 BELVIDERE Bucklin 3 2 4 8 Flemming 5 10 2 20 Shattuck 5 4 4 14 Gill 3 4 3 10 Bankord 5 2 2 12 Meyers 1 0 2 2 Ralston 1 2 1 4 Barr 1 5 2 7 Burger 2 2 0 6 MCGill 0 2 2 2 Totals 27 31 22 85 McH 24 23 35 20 102 Belvidere 20 16 24 25 85 Grapplers Overpower Grayslake 55 To 6 Coach Marty Sobczak "Rassling Warriors" opened their home season with a bang last Tuesday night, when they walloped Grayslake 55 to 6.
