PAGE 10 - PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11. 1974 EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR I Went out to watch Coach Ken Ludwig's Warrior basketball learn win handily over the Grant five Saturday night. Ken doesn't have any giants as basketball players go today. But, he has more size than usual at McHenry High. The visiting team hustled and brought the score to 35-27 at half time, but that is as close as they could come all night We saw the bench cleared and saw an All-Junior team on the floor in the last quarter before the starting lineup was sent in to clamp down the victory. Koerber and Stine were out with the flu bug so we didn't see full strength. The Warrior guards are hustlers, but will have to score more before the rugged season gets too far along. Warrior passing will have to get sharper and turnovers will have to get fewer.SGuess that domes with more g^mes under the belt. I McHenry has been picked to finish third in the loop behind i ion and North Chicago. Our 6pys just might fool 'em. They IJave great potential. * * With both teams playing man to man defense, it gave passers iome trouble getting the ball in from out of bounds. Keeping on the move and coming out to meet passes is still basic in basketball. The game doesn't change much It is still a race horse game, nothing like the old days of the center jump and ball control. Coaches still get excited and yell at the officials Fans in the stands still know more about officiating than the men with the whistles But, that 's all in the game. One of the officials looked like he could be Tommy Diedrich's little brother Looked across the hall and saw such old faithfuls as John McGee, Bill Oeffling, Ron Conway, Charlie Johnson and John "Bud" - "Honky" Miller Some good basketball talent in that group. But, that goes back a few years. Ned Neuman left with a minute and a half to go. Maybe he had to catch a plane. Coach Gary Collins had his anxious moments before his Soph team eked out a 49-48 win. Pure genius when a coach wins those kind! He did call a time out with 22 seconds left to tell his boys how to play it. Wonder what those girls did with the "NO PARKING" parking meter cover they snatched on Green Street Friday? Replacement value doesn't amount to anything, but it 's still a No-No. They acted so innocent we wouldn't have the heart to report them. THE FASHION SHOPPE 1007 N. Junior Varsity team lost their match in a close contest with the Lake Forest Jr. Varsity. Team members are Captain Barb Romme, Janet McKinley, Cathy Boak, Cindy Beyer, Jill Freund and Julie Bitterman. Team manager is Janet Owen. The girls ' next matches are Thurs., 12-12 at McHenry West Campus at 6:00 with North Chicago Everyone is welcome to come and cheer the girls on to victory. Warriors Lose 63-62 Thriller At Zion By Dick Rabbitt Unable to make free throws in the closing minutes cost the Warriors a basketball game at Zion last Friday night After jumping out to a 20 to 16 first quarter lead, the Warriors fell behind midway in the second period and trailed at halftime 37 to 31. With Koerber, Stark, and Zeller all hitting, the Warriors closed the gap to 51-49 going into the final period. The final 8 minutes was a real barn burner Both teams made numerous mistakes, and because both play pressure defense, the officials tooted the whistle a number of times, mainly on Zion The Warriors could not take advantage at the foul line, and thus lost their conference opener 63 to 62. Steve Koerber led the Warrior attack with 18 pts followed by Zeller with 13 and Stark with 12 BOX SCORES McHENRY fg ft Pf tP Zeller 6 2 2 12 Stark 6 1 2 13 Koerber 8 2 1 18 K Ludwig 2 2 2 6 Kaspryzk 3 0 2 6 Stine 1 1 0 3 T. Although the Warriors played without the services of starter Steve Koerber and backup Ron Stine. depth of the McHenry bench proved to be too muchi for Grant. Shown in defense are Marty Zeller (50), Tom • *- • Brian Lund (34) and Steve Kasprzyk (14). The Warriors play Forest here next Friday night. Warriors Outhustle Grant Cagers 69-54 By Dick Rabbitt Shaking off the disappointing one point defeat to Zion on Friday night, the Warriors of Coach Ken Ludwig outhustled the Grant Bulldogs in their home opener 69 to 54 on Saturday night. Playing without the services of Steve Koerber and Ron Stine, both who were confined to bed with the flu, the Warriors never trai led as they forced the inexperienced "Bulldogs" into numerous mistakes throughout the evening. With the hot hand in the opening period of Marty Zeller who canned 4 field goals, the Warriors ran up a 18 to 12 first period lead Midway in the second period Kasprzyk's two free throws put the Warriors ahead 26 to 16, and then they coasted to a 35 to 27 halftime lead. In the 3rd period, led by forward Tom Stark, along with the Ludwig brothers, Brian Lund, Kasprzyk and Zeller the locals shot out to a big lead at the end of the period 52 to 35. Doug Hertel coming off the bench was the big gun in the final period as the 6'5" junior canned 3 baskets and a free throw, and along with Decker, Christy, Kenne Ludwig, Zeller and Kasprzyk who all scored to put the game away 69 to 54. The Warriors were the superior team. Coach John Schad of Grant has a very inexperienced squad this year, only 2 regulars returning. On the other hand, the Warriors looked sharp at times. Their defense forced Grant into numerous turnovers, and they took advantage of them to score. Friday the Warriors host Lake Forest and on Saturday they travel to Antioch BOX SCORES Decker Christy Rode Reilly Totals 26 17 14 69 GRANT Marsh 1 0 2 T Kelley 7 1 0 4 15 Eastings 2 1 0 4 4 Stramel 6 1 5 13 ' r Epker 3 2 5 8 Simmon 0 0 2 TT Marautno 2 0 0 4 Mieszatuma 2 2 1 6 Savage 1 0 0 ^ Totals 24 6 23 %' McHenry 18 17 17 17 69 Grant 12 15 8 19 54 McHENRY fg ft Pf tP Kaspryzk 3 3 1 9 K.
