ON THE SIDELINES With Olck Rabtoitt The Warriors were well represented at Zion last Friday night. A huge crowd of adults were on hand from McHenry. Believe that the old timers actually outnumbered the students at the game. Although the outcome was in the loss column, the Warriors showed that they could play with the best of them on any given night. Am still looking forward to the night that they open the Upper Balcony at West Campus. With over 2,000 students enrolled in the high school, and the area population who claim they are sports minded, it seems funny that only a handful attend our home games. Having a several week layoff between seasons, I can't believe that TV is that good on a Friday or Saturday night. So come on fans, there are no holdouts in high school athletics, no under the table payoff, no scholarships or meal money. The kids are doing it for the love of the game. Let's get out and support the Warriors, whether it be wrestling, basketball or any other athletic activity. Show the youth of the community that you are interested in their activities. Lest we forget, the youth of today are our leaders of tomorrow. The "Hassling Warriors" did a fine job last Friday night as they came from far back to defeat the ZeeBees of Zion. Coach Marty Sobzcak has every right to be proud of his team for their fine comeback. It was disappointing Saturday night at the Warrior- Grant basketball game. Coaches Schad of Grant and Ludwig of McHenry didn't get into their annual verbal battle that is a sight to behold. The Warriors simply outclassed the Bulldogs and Coach John Schad was unusually quiet. As I mentioned last week, just watching these two coaches in a game is well worth the price of admission. Don't forget the sophomore basketball tourney at West Campus. Deerfield, Schaumburg, Marian Central and McHenry are the teams entered. Deerfield has been the winner the past three years, with our McHenry sophomores the runnerup. Maybe the young Warriors can turn the tide this year and take home the 1st place trophy. Games are next Tuesday and Wednesday at 6:30 and 8 p.m. The Chicago Tribune came out with some interesting football results the other day in regards to the past season. They rated the 200 high school teams that have a conference affiliated in the Chicago area. Their so-called system is called the Power System. It is based on the conference, caliber of competition, the score of games, teams that beat other teams with a 500 record, and games lost to teams under 500. As expected Glenbrook North the Class 5-A title winner ranked number one with a 12 and 0 record and a total of 128.25 power points. Area teams that were represented and their rankings are as follows: Barrington number 14 and 109.04 pts. Zion Benton was 23rd and had 103.22 pts. Our McHenry Warriors ranked 43rd and had a 94.55 rating. Crys tal Lake ranked 83 and had a 81.44 rating (the Warriors and Tigers tied for third in the North Suburban with a 6 and 3 record). Lake Forest was 111th, Libertyville was ranked 147, Woodstock was 154th, Cary Grove 164th, Mundelein 172nd, North Chicago was 183rd and Marian Central 198th. It was interesting to note that a number of schools who had a better won and lost record than the Warriors, were down the list due to the caliber of competition, and the scores of their games. There is no doubt that Crystal Lake's 55 to 2 loss to Zion hurt them in the standings. But Barrinton had the third best record, and still finished 14th in the Grib standings. I guess it is just like the college polls. Who i#Number One? Announce Changes In State Scholarship Laws This lime of Ihe year brirgs a change I hat directly effects students who want to continue their post-secondary education. The following legislative and administrative changes are now in effect in the major financial aid programs of the Illinois State Scholarship commission: 1 Illinois undergraduate students enrolled in at least 6 credit hours of college work in any semester or quarter, at any ISSC-approved institution, are eligible to receive assistance through the Monetary Award program if they qualify on the basis of need. All applicants who apply for the 1974-75 Monetary Award program and are granted assistance, will be notified of both their full and part-time eligibility at the college of their choice. 2-The maximum monetary award for which a student may qualify has been increased from $1,300 to $1,350. This amount is applicable only toward tuition and mandatory fees at the 180 approved Illinois colleges, universities, and hospital school of nursing. Students must still apply for other sources of assistance at the institution, and through other state and federal programs for help in paying for room and board, books and supplies, transportation, etc. 3-Monetary awards will be made available to eligible students for up to five years of undergraduate study, or until such time as the student receives a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent amount of college credit Previously students could use the award for only four years. This extension of entitlement cannot be applied retroactively to students who have already received a Bachelor's degree. The new entitlement limitation will be equitable adjusted to ac commodate the half-time student. 4-The final application deadline for the 1975-76 Monetary Award program is Oct. 1, 1975. Students enrolled half-time (as defined by the institution) are now eligible to participate in the Illinois Guaranteed Loan program. The minimum amount the student can borrow is $150. The maximum annual loan will vary depending upon the student's class level, and whether he is attending on a full or half-time basis, as follows: First academic year, full-time maximum, $500, full-time maximum, $1,000; Second academic year, half-time maximum, $750, full-time maximum $1,500; Each academic year thereafter, half- time maximum, $1,250, full- time maximum, 2,500. Previously only Illinois residents enrolled in approved colleges, universities, and vocational-trade schools anywhere in the United States were eligible to participate in this program. The guidelines have now been revised to permit non-residents of this state who are attending Illinois institutions to also qualify for participation in this loan program Borrowers do not have to begin repaying the principal of a guaranteed loan until nine months after they conclude their post-secondary studies, but interest begins to accrue immediately after a loan has been negotiated, and must be paid on behalf of the borrower during the school years. For those students who qualify, the government will pay the in terest until the student is required to assume repayment of principal New federal guidelines define who is eligible for this kind of "interest sub- I FROM THE FARM By George J Young, Extension Adviser, Agriculture, McHenry County We just received a supply of the 1975 Farmers Tax Guides from the Internal Revenue Service.
