Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 18, 1924) At a meeting of the board of local improvements of this city held at the city hall Dec. 11, a resolution was adopted calling for a paving program for the c ity of McHenry. Three types of pavement and the estimated cost had been prepared by the Wells Engineering company of Aurora. Frank P. Bailey of Waukegan, who last summer covered the initial sack for the McHenry Baseball club, has been signed by the Milwaukee American Association club and will report for duty with that outfit next spring. William Harm of Spring Grove has been engaged to take up the work of farm census in McHenry township. Dec. 12 was the ninety-fourth birthday anniversary of McHenry's oldest resident, Mrs. Jan Button. What the alumni are doing -- Earl Walsh working in the hardware store in McHenry. Harriett Bob employed at Fox River Valley State Bank. Greeta Chamberlin working in I he telephone office. Pauline Freund employed by a laqyer in the metropolitan city. John Vycital taking a course of mechanical engineering at the University of Illinois. Helen Vycital teaching school in the Barreville district. Carolyn Steffes teaching Lincoln school. Helen Powers teaching in Sherman Hill school. Kathleen Powers teaching in Qurton Bridge school. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 20, 1934) Mrs. Sarah Sherburne died at the home of her daughter near Ringwood, Dec. 13, at the age of 102 years, three months and 26 days. Mrs. Sherburne came to McHenry with her parents in 1840. They settled on a farm north of town now owned by Jacob Freund, making the journey from Danville, Vt., to McHenry in a covered wagon. Christmas baskets to be distributed this year is in charge of the McHenry Township Emergency Relief association and the president, Mrs. Albert Purvey, reports that people are responding generously. Vernon J. Knox recently received word that he was one of the few successful ones that passed the state bar examination held recently at Springfield. More than 200 women of the eleventh district, American Legion auxiliary, assembled at Joliet for their semi-annual convention. Delegates from McHenry who attended the convention were Mrs. Anna Howard, Mrs. Lester Bacon and Mrs. Fred Schoewer. Undaunted by the snow, Mr. Orr's Zoology classes visited the state fish hatchery at Spring Grove. In bowling Nick Freund led the Palace Recreation five in its defeat at the hands of the McHenry Ice Cream team entrants in the Waukegan commercial league with a splendid count of 650 with all games over the 200 mark. Krumrey of the winners had 249 in his last attempt for the single high game that clinched the victory. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 29, 1949) Wilbert Swanson, 55, a resident of Lily Lake for the past sixteen years, died Dec. 22 while enroute to Hines hospital for treatment. The deceased was a world war veteran and was confined to- a hospital for ten years after its conclusion as a result of being gassed in France. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Phelan and family are moving from Chicago to the Miller apart­ ment .on Richmond road. Mr. Phelan will be employed at the Althoff Hardware store. Enjoying popularity through the holiday season is Maurice's Candy Shop, which opened recently on Green street with Maurice Leclerc as owner. The shop carries Andes Candies in a variety of assortments. Announcement has been made of the marriage Nov. 26 of Miss Edith Matzat daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Felix Matzat of McCullom Lake and Mr Joseph Robert Schiffer. One of the five McHenry County babies born Christmas day was the daughter, Susan Mary, born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bitterman of Lily Lake. The little lady was the fourth girl born on Dec. 25. The Honorable John T. Jarecki, Collector of Internal Revenue, last week reminded employers and employees of the first district of Illinois thai the Federal insurance con­ tributions act provides for an increase in the tax rate under that act ot 1 Vz per cent on employees and l'/2 per cent on employers based on all taxable wages paid on and after Jan. 1, 1950. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Dec. 23, 1964) By a vote of a little less than 3 to 1, the $675,000 referendum to provide additional facilities for children in consolidated Grade School District 15 won approval of voters at the polls last Saturday. Following custom, the City Council Christmas week meeting held Monday night adjourned early. David Ladd, representing Ladd Enterprises, attended the meeting to discuss briefly the proposed land development southwest of McHenry which will probably be named Boone Valley. Walter Bolger was reelected president of the McHenry Local of the Pure Milk association at the annual meeting and dinner held at the Legion home. Lt. and Mrs. Mark V^ycjtal (the former Pam Munroe) who have been at the Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Tex., are spending a month's leave with relatives here before going to his new assignment at the Seward Air Force Base in Tennessee. Seventeen eighth graders, twenty-one in seventh grade and thirty-three sixth grade rated the "A" honor roll just released prior to the Christmas vacation in McHenry Junior high school. Robert Madsen has been appointed as full time juvenile officer by Sheriff Ed Dowd. Madsen who has been with the Sheriff's department since 1953 will handle all juvenile cases in the future. Ted Graves At Convention For Behavior Therapy Ted Graves, M.S.W., C.S.W., psychiatric social worker at the Family Service and Mental Health Clinic for McHenry County, recently attended the eighth annual convention of the Association for the Ad­ vancement of Behavior Therapy in Chicago. At the convention, Graves, participated in learning ex­ periences related to the resolution of both personal and marital problems Some of the problems covered were c o m m u n i c a t i o n a n d relationship difficulties, sexual adjustment, childrearing, dieting, alcohol and other drug abuses. Throughout the con­ vention, the importance of evaluation as a part of treat­ ment was emphasized. Attending the convention, as well as leading many of the learning experiences, were some of the most recognized and distinguished therapists in the United States. Among them, were Dr. Joseph Wolpe, Richard B. Stuart, D.S.W:, Albert Ellis, PhD. and A. Jack Turner, PhD. Karpawich of Wonder Lake, received his "S.J.'s" during a special ceremony, announced Commandant of Cadets, Captain J.E.\ Clarke (USN Ret). "The "S.J 's'Y explained Clarke, "is tl^e insignia awarded to a ?adet upon completion of this twelve-week recruit training period and which promotes him to the rank of private." Clarke added, "Receiving the S.J.'s is no small accomplishment. A cadet recruit follows a tough course of military training, par­ ticipates in the athletic program, and carries five academic subjects. What military man does as much?"
