The outcome of this survey was published in the Plaindealer. "For the results of the survey to be truly representative of the majority thinking of the Johnsburg school district citizens, one must know the proportion of those responding to the survey as opposed to the total citizenry within the district who would be affected by a new high school. Inasmuch as District 12 is aware of the numbers of newsletter "Info- 12" circulated, a clearer pic ture could have emerged if the percentage of responses as opposed to those who did not respond had been included in the results. However, the District 12 article just states "of those who answered the survey." "The 68 percent of a two- thirds agreement factor, as stated in the article, would be meaningless if, as an example, those who replied to the survey were only 10 percent of the family population in the district. "The paragraph which deals with an analysis of comments is perplexing. Apparently the remarks were in addition to the actual selection of choice. Therefore, the statements as a separate entry in the article vs a duplication of the final results of the survey. The only con clusion that I am able to draw from the comments is that those who were in favor of a high school within the confines of District 12 overwhelmingly included remarks as to why they made this choice. "District 12 should make these remarks- available to High School District 156 and I would certainly believe that some of the reasons brought forth for a high school in District 12 could be rectified by the high school district. "I take exception to the first part of the survey question, namely, 'one of the greatest educational concerns of Johnsburg citizens was the location of a high school within the present confines of John sburg Public School District 12.' "I have sons attending both East and West McHenry high schools and still I do not con sider it as one of my greatest educational concerns, just because they are not attending a high school in a loCittion encompassed by District 12. "Someone please advise the Johnsburg public school board of education and ad ministration that High School District 156 isn't all that bad. "Sincerely, "Arthur Oakley "5901 N. Bunny Ave. "Pistakee Highlands" ON SCHOOL SMOKING "Editor: "Thanks to Mrs. Gregory for her interest and information pertaining to school smoking. "And many thanks to your Daper for continually informing us about this problem. I at tended the meeting that was publicized in your paper some time ago when interested parents were asked to try to solve the problems connected With school smoking. I think I can say that the attendance at the meeting was adequate. r "From the attitudes of the school staff, students and parents, it was my opinion that we were all against smoking on the school grounds, with one exception of a younger teacher more or less trying to imply that we should concede to the school smoker. "Neighbors of the school complained about the school smoker loitering and littering around their properties. Parents complained about the non-smoker being abused if they tried to use"- the washrooms. The washrooms that the smokers controlled were damaged. The sinks had to be reinforced with steel and enclosed from the underneath. The toilet paper holders were kicked off daily. "I guess from this meeting it was concluded at a later date to allow the school smoker to smoke on the outside school grounds during certain hours with parent consent to remedy the other problems. "I was then firmly against the school smoker and I still am. "The approval to smoke was for the East campus. These students are 13,14 and 15 years of age. I believe there is a state statute that children of this age are not allowed to purchase cigarettes. Miriani, IRS district director for northern Illinois, said, "Tax help from the Internal Revenue Service is still just a toll-free telephone this age, aren't they liable legally, or at least obligated to us parents! "It is also my opinion that the West campus furnishes an inside room for a smoking area. If the school board asks for a referendum for another high school, I find it difficult to vote "yes" when I know there is a room set aside for smoking. What is being taught in the health classes is contradicted by this 'Smoker Room'. "C'mon parents, speak up and give the kids a chance. They are so confused by these dicisions they are looking for someone to cling. Are we there? "Alex M.
