Broadway Pist&kee Highlands Rev. lien Schoenherr Sunday Wdrship U^oon., Sun day Sc|iopf, 9:45awa. Turn out the lights some night, touch a match to a single candle, and watch the miracle that happens. The flame wavers and then stead ies. The whole room is bathed in a soft glow, showing new shadows and depths, new softness and warmth. It seems like you are living in an other place, in another age. Switch the lights on again and they seem dazzling, harsh, until your eyes get used to them. Two entirely different atmos pheres have been created in the same room. The candlelight has wrought a kind of magic; electricity has brought with it reality. In our lives we need both magic and reality--and the place to find them is in church. The Church offers the magic of peace and relaxation; yet its message is real, sometimes even harsh. Its teachings are as old as time, yet as new as tomorrow. Go find out for yourself. Yes...on the list of so-called unlucky days, Friday, when it falls on the 13th, ranks especially high. Friday is an unlucky day . . 13 an unlucky number ... put the two together, and they are doubly unlucky! Many Americans believe - or perhaps half-believe - that Friday the 13th is a day one might better spend in bed. And yet. . . is it fact . . or fiction? Perhaps you believe in lucky and unlucky days and in lucky or unlucky numbers . . . and perhaps you don't. But there are many people who cast suspicious eyes at Friday the 13th counting it a day of twofold bad luck. But is the number 13 par ticularly unlucky? Well, surely it is not for the United States. For as we all know, our beloved nation was built on a 13-cornered foundation, and from a nucleus of 13 colonies has grown the greatest nation on earth! And so it is that Old Glory bears 13 stripes and on the Great Seal of the United States there are 13 stars and 13 bars. Also portrayed on the seal is an eagle with 13 feathers in its tail. The eagle holds in its left claw 13 darts and in its right claw an ! THINK ABOUT IT! j BOB JUSTEN Chistmas is coming. . . . And once again, the days proceeding Chirstmas, as usual, have little meaning for what the true meaning of Christmas represents . . . In these pre-Christmas days, should not more of us realize we are preparing to celebrate the birthday anniversary of the most influential Person ever born? Should we not give some thought to what this world would be without the pervasive majesty of Chirst? Should we not include thoughts about His brief but beautifully exampled life on earth? For some strange reason we call these pre-Christmas days the Christmas season. Fine. Wonderful. But should we not make a better effort to be more like the Person whose birth we will soon observe? Should we not make an equally strong effort toextend the mean ing of the Christmas seaon throughout the coming year? GEORGE R. JUSTEN FUNERAL HOME' 3519 W. Elm St., McHenry, Illinois olive branch with 13 leaves and 13 olives. And our country's motto - meaning one out of many is "E PLURIBUS UNUM, " which has 13 letters. The cornerstone of the White House in Washington was laid in 1792 on Oct. 13. Francis Scott Key wrote our National Anthem "The Star Spangled Banner ", in 1814, on the night of Sept. 13. So. actually the number 13 figures more prominently than any other number in the em blems and history of the United States. But what about the day . . . Friday? Isn't it a day of ill-luck and of misfortune? Not for America. A surprsing number of men who have shaped our destiny were born on Friday. Among them, Daniel Webster, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. Christopher Columbus set sail from Spain on Aug. 3, 1492 - a Friday. Christopher Columbus) sighted land in the New wWd on Oct. 12, 1492 - a Friday. The Mayflower arrived off our Eastern coast on November 10,1620 - the Pilgrim fathers first went ashore at Plymouth on December 22, 1620 - a Friday. And the United States took its place among the nations of the world when France became the first to recognize our In dependence on Jan. 16, 1778 - a Friday. And so ... if you believe or half-believe - in lucky days and lucky numbers, America's are Friday ... and 13! And .. that is a fact . . . not fiction! (Copyright, 1974, John A. Consumers' Corner Electronic Calculators Small, silent, fast, accurate, easy to use -- these are charac teristics of the modern, hand held electronic calculating ma chines flooding the market today. Many of these calculators solve highly complex problems. The av erage consumer, though, will use the machine for standard arith metical processes -- addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. If you're considering purchas ing one of these small pocket models be sure it includes a "clear" key, a K constant key and a floating deciman. It should op erate off the regular 120-volt power supply plus a built in or rechargeable battery. Avoid cal culators utilizing disposable bat teries -- they have a short life. Check calculators prior to pur chase by working out some prob lems with known answers. Dis played answers should be readily visible, clear and bright -- with viewing available from any an gle. The better ones flash illumi nated numbers in a matchstick like formation. New!
