Elect Anderson GOP Conference Chairman Congressman John B. An derson (R-Ill.) has been reelected chairman of the House Republican conference for the 94th Congress. Anderson was named to a fourth term in the third-ranking leadership position among House Republicans by GOP Congressmen who will serve in the coming session, which opens Jan. 3, 1975. A total of 144 members were eligible to cast ballots in the election, in which Anderson defeated Congressman Charles Wiggins (R-Calif.) by a vote of 85 to 52. Wiggins, a member of the House Judiciary committee, gained prominence last summer by his statlilch defense of President Nixon throughout the impeachment proceedings before the panel. While some political ob servers viewed the contest as a clash between conservatives and moderates among the House Republican delegation, Anderson did not see it as a philosophical contest. "I believe this vote was an expression of confidence in my ability to contribute meaningfully to a practical resolution of the very serious and difficult problems that the Congress must address in the months ahead," Anderson said. "Rather than dwell upon differences in perspective," the Rockford Congressman added, "I believe it is incumbent upon all of us in the Congress, Republicans and Democrats alike, to work together to pull our economy out of this recession without further feeding the fires of inflation."
