DON'T FORGET THE ORIGINAL EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR--I So we pulled ourself out of the easy chair and headed for Buckner Gym at West Campus Friday night. The Lake Forest basketball team came to town to play a game with our Warriors. Now we don't think the Lake Forest team is THAT bad. but Coach Ludwig's boys were up. They were hot shots on offense and demons on defense. We said last week our guards would have to do more scoring. They showed us. The home team won 95 to 56 and some fans were pulling for a 100 score. But, Coach Ludwig mercifully used everybody on the bench when it was apparent in the second quarter that the visitors were not going to cause any trouble. Of course, Ken might have wanted some of his subs to get in some playing time. He will need them as the season moves along. Another thing, the Warriors faced another game Saturday night, non-conference at An- tioch. Dick Rabbitt left us at the half to wander around, delegating us to watch the Pom-Pon girls. We liked it. That fourth quarter was mighty long and Winn Phillips said he was tempted to ask the loud speaker man to ask us to wake up. Winn doesn't miss much and he is a real sports fan. We used to have games with standing room only at the East Campus gym. uirtstras SPECIALS Here is your Chrstmas Bonus n i i i i i CURRENT I CL0SE0UTS | a* , j To OO offi SHIRTS & SWEATERS IO COLORS TO 1 f&A Ryder Cup ITITELEST & MCGREGOR SETS AVAILABLE p, MADE CHOOSE FROM BY.gOD McHenry Country Club -Pro Shop Phone 385-3435 IN THE NEW YEAR WITH US AT GASTHAUS LORELEI So now we have a large seating capacity with empty seats. Where are all the students? Why don't they at tend games? There must be a reasonable answer. We suggested to Dan Boland that the school may have to offer a door prize Alvin "Phanny" Phannenstill was telling about the fellow who told of having 60 dollars worth of groceries stolen. When asked where they stole them from, the fellow replied, "The glove compartment." Naw-that isn't Harry Dean singing those Christmas carols you hear on Green Street. These non-lickin' stamps are the greatest thing to come along since the wheel. It was pleasant to visit Lisle and Vivian Bassett Sunday as they celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. 40 years! Being a Main Street boy, we well remember Lisle's parents and grandparents. Kept thinking, "Is it that long ago?" Now Lisle is looking forward to the 50th. Hope we can be around to help them celebrate. We add congratulations to a nice couple. Bassett is a good old name in McHenry. ' ' M a c ' ' M c C r a c k e n questioned the traffic count across the old bridge over Fox River - 4,000 cars a day was too high. v Petie Schaefer chimed in to agree with "Mac". We can't convince them so may have to ask Jim Radkow, County Superintendent of High ways. If we can't get a recount, Petie plans to sit on a chair some day and take his own count. TOMASELLO'S T N T. Antioch Edges Warriors 61-59 By Dick Rabbitt After easily defeating Lake Forest on Friday night, the McHenry High Warriors of Coach Ken Ludwig lost a thriller 61 to 59 to Antioch on Saturday night at Antioch. Jumping off to a 14 to 10 first quarter lead, the Warriors still managed to be on top at the intermission 31 to 28. If you can call the first half a McHenry victory, then you must call the second half a Antioch win. Shooting a torrid 56 percent with Albano and Pierrone shooting from the hips, floor, and any place else you can think of, the Sequoits grabbed the lead, and held on ft>r dear life. With 13 seconds remaing and the score tied, the Sequoits had the ball, in desperation a shot was taken, and with the Warriors all turning their backs to go for the rebound, the ball bounced out to the top of the circle, and Pierrone grabbing it, literally threw it up and in it went with 4 seconds on the clock for the Antioch win. The Sequoits out-rebounded the Warriors 34 to 32. In talking with Coach Ludwig, he said "Our inability to make the free throws in the 1 and 1 situation late in the game hurt us". The coach also commented, "On Friday our guards were able to hit the bucket, but tonight they just coulnd't buy a basket." The loss leaves the Warriors with a record of 4 and 3. * MCHENRY fg ft Pf tP Zeller 3 4 3 10 Stark 6 2 4 14 Koerber 5 4 .4^14 Kasprzyk 3 0 y ft K. Ludwig 2 2 3 6 Stine 1 0 1 2 Meyer 1 0 0 2 T. The Warrior full court press was too much for the Scouts to handle, and with the uhcanny shooting of the Warriors during the opening period, it was just a matter of how high Coach Ludwig wanted to run the score. With Tom Stark's two free throws in the opening minute, the Warrior proceeded to shoot 8 of 11 and 4 out of 4 from the line to open a 20 to 6 lead at the end of the first period. Kenne Ludwig and Steve Kaspryzk each had 6 points during the first period. Still using a pressure defense and again good shooting, the Warriors continued to put points on theboacd afcr>tbe&. rolled toa$b'ti> ̂ ml^gih Mine intermission. The Warriors made 9 out of 15 from the field during this time, and had made 11 straight free throws before they missed. Zeller's basket at 5:10 of the third period put the Warriors ahead 60 to 23, and then Coach Ludwig with mercy in his heart beean to clear the bench. The Warriors continued to roll and were ahead 77 to 39 going into the final period. With the reserves playing the final period the Warrior shooting average took a drop, but they did manage to outscore the Scouts 18 to 17. During the first half the Warriors were just great. With the huge lead.it led to many mistakes during the final two periods, but for once the Warrior fans could just sit and relax and enjoy the game. Lake Forest depended on Bill Orlowski the leading scorer in the conference after one game (25 pts.) and when the Warriors bottled him up, the Scout of fense was a bit unorganized. Orlowski fouled out with 5 minutes remaining in the 3rd period. The Warrior full court press forced the Scouts into numerous turnovers, and they took advantage of every Scout mistake in the first half. It is a credit to Coach Ludwig that he spared the Scouts. There is no doubt in the minds of the few who attended that the Warriors could almost name their score if they so desired. In talking wftfrCoach Bill Braman of Lake Forestafter the game, he was quite impressed with the Warriors. He said "Our scouts told us the Warrior guards couldn't shoot". Kenne Ludwig and Steve Kaspryzk each had 12 pts. to knock that theory in the head. Well that leaves the Warriors 1 and 1 in conference play, with Crown coming up Friday night. The Warriors shot 29 out of 57 for 51 jrcent while the Scouts were tr aitifetrcent average. MCHENRY fg ft Pf tp Zeller 3 6 0 12 Stark 3 6 5 12 Koerber 7 5 4 19 K. Ludwig 5 2 3 12 Kaspryzk 4 4 3 12 T. In the 200 yd freestyle he was timed in 1.54.9., and in the 100 yd freestyle his time was 52.9. On Thursday the locals defeated Elgin Larkin at the West Campus pool by the score of 98 to 64.
