as On The Sidelines With Dick Rnbbltt East Leyden High School basketball team has been voted the number one high school team in the state in the early season ratings. To find out just how good the East Leyden club was, I only had to journey down the hall at West Campus and talk with Ken Swanson. > Ken is a McHenry High school coach, and one of the top basketball officials in Northern Illinois. He worked several of their games last season and has been the whistle tooter in three of their games already this season. He has commented to me on the East Leyden squad. Tom Gore that 7' 2" center is probably the most improved player in the state this season. He is headed for North Carolina State, and according to all reports from the scouts, he is more adavanced at this stage than the former All American Tom Burelson, who is now playing in the pros. Glen Groenwald the 6' 9" junior, who has been an All Chicago Area player his first two seasons is really the complete player. Ken has said that he is the finest high school player he has ever seen, and remember Ken coached at Batavia where Dan Issel, the Kentucky Colonel all pro, played his high school ball. Groenwald is an A student and should have no trouble in any college that wishes his services- for basketball. Another East Leyden player is 6' 7" John Hendler, Johru gets his 14 to 15 points per game plus many rebounds. With the two guards that average over 6', one can see why East Leyden is highly rated.'Ken has already worked games this season for such highly ranked teams as East Aurora, Joliet West, New Trier West, Rockford Guilford, and last week worked the barn burner between old rivals Fremd of Palatine, and Elk Grove. I had the pleasure several years ago watching Ken in action, when he sat Ernie Kivisto coach of East Aurora down with a "Big T". This is probably the first time that Ernie was at a loss for words. For you fans that are not familiar with the coach at East Aurora, his record in high school coaching is soon approaching 600 wins, and very few officials dare to tell him off. The "big man" at West Campus calls the game as he see it, coaching records don't impress him, and that is why my good friend Ken is in demand for the top games in the Chicago area. Don't be surprised one of these days when you see the "Crusher" working the state finals at Champaign. Our Warriors got the bad end of the draw in the Kankaee tournament. Imagine playing at 10:30 A.M. after a two hour drive. Looking over the tournament field, I think that our Warriors will do themselves proud, this could be the time to bring back the big trophy. Char Collins, wife of sophomore coach Gary Collins, had better put in an order for extra milk for the Collins household. The young sophomore coach will be getting a few ulcers if his team doesn't quit playing those close games. Winning 52 to 50, losing 41 to 39, and winning 48 to 45 all in one week is enough to give any coach an ulcer. So come on sophs give your coach a break. The "Rassling Warriors" defeated the Lake Forest Scouts last Friday night 37 to 13. Ken Scanlin lost his first match, but is still 7 and 1 for the season. Don Freund got his first pin of the year at 119, which was the turning point for the team Friday night. Dave Christopher won his first match at 185 lbs. It was the team's 6th match in 11 days, which must be quite a burden for the squad. The win brought the Warriors to .500 for the half way point in the season. Last year the team was 2 and 10 for the season. As I mentioned earlier this season, Coach Marty Sobczak has the makings of a fine team. MCHENRY HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS , SCHEDULE Wed-Dee. 18 BB • S Soph.
