As Christmas Day is breathing down our necks and the usual rush in on, we think back THEN and NOW - - - THEN at a tender age we saved up ten dollars and it covered our entire shopping list. NOW - - - WOW' THEN Santa arrived during the night so we had to hike ourselves up to bed early. Santa put up the tree while we slept and decorated it with popcorn strings. Excitement ran high as we awoke early and rushed downstairs to see what the old whiskered gentlement put under the tree for us. NOW the tree is put up way ahead of Christmas and some gifts are under the tree in advance. THEN there was only one Santa and a plump one was he. NOW there is a skinny helper on every corner and in many stores. THEN you hung up your stocking and tried to get one of your mother's cause it would hold more. NOW they buy fancy socks in the store. THEN you found an orange in the tip of the stocking - - - a big treat. NOW an orange isn't a big treat. Kids have orange juice every day. (We hadn't heard of vitamins in those days.) THEN if you got a sled you figured on keeping it until you were well grown. Marian By Dick Rabbitt Coach Gary Collins' McHenry high sophomores won their own holiday tourney, but not before an all out effort against Marian Central. Defeating defending champs Deerfield on Tuesday night by a score of 59 to 55, put the young Warriors in the driver's seat, as they only had to defeat Marian to assure themselves of the title. Marian who had lost their two previous games, and were minus players because of illness put in an all out effort, Marian jumped off to an 11 to 10 lead in the first quarter, and still were on top 22 to 21 at the intermission. The young Warriors managed to gain an advantage during the third Camp Duncan Makes It Four In A Row On Saturday the Camp Duncan Y Swim Team played host to the Joliet Y Swim Team in a dual meet. THEN you cranked up the gtamaphone to hear Christmas music, then went to church to hear the holier songs. NOW TV and radio bring the music and records are blasting forth in the business areas. THEN a certain spirit of good will permeated the air. NOW there is still kind feeling toward our fellowman. THEN the model "T" was up on jacks for the winter. You walked a lot and enjoyed a sleigh ride sometimes. NOW the snow plows are out during the night and you wheel the gas buggy out in the mor ning. Other Warriors in action are 1-r Kenne Ludwig (11), Marty Zeller (51, Terry Reilly (23) and Steve Warriors9 Aggressive Play Downs Crown period and led 36 to 34 going into the final period. The young Hurricanes outscored the sophs 11 to 9 to send the game into overtime. During the first overtime the "Canes" grabbed a 4 point lead, but the Warriors rallied to tie the game at 49 all and send the game into another three minutes of play. It was during this second overtime that the young Warriors played their best game of the night as they grabbed the lead and held on for the win. It was a real battle, both teams coming from behind to knot the score. Credit should be given to Coach Collins and his crew. After three years in the run- nerup spot, they nailed down the championship. Coach Rokus of Marian and his team deserve a lot of credit, the smaller Marian team showed a lot of fight and hustle, and playing without the ser vices of a few players, all the more credit should be given to these lads. Schaumburg who defeated Deerfield in the opening game took second place. All in all it was quite a tournament, and the "M" Club under the sponsorship of Ken Swanson who put on the tourney should take a bow for a job well done. A brilliant display of basketball in the second half enabled the Warriors of Coach Ken Ludwig to defeat Crown Friday night at Crown 70 to 58. Hitting only three baskets in the first period, the Warriors were as cold as the snow on the ground and trailed the Vikings 10 to 7 at the end of the first period. With Tommy Ludwig and Terry Reilly coming off the bench in the second period, it seemed just the spark the Warriors needed, as they raced to a 30 to 24 halftime lead. With the same two starting the third period, the Warriors continued their assault on the hapless Vikings. During a period of six minutes Reilly hit on 6 of 8 shots, and along with the fine play of Marty Zeller, the Warriors built up an edge of 48 to 35 at the end of three periods. With Koerber fouling out at the 6:48 mark, Ron Stine came ste the aid of the Warriors and 3&«did a fine job on the defensive '•^ards. Twice" he rammed the ball back in the shooter's face, and the big fellow pulled down several key rebounds. The officiating of the game left something to be desired. Both coaches should be thank ful that no one was injured, as the whistle tooters let the game in the closing minutes get a little out of hand. It was a fine win for the Warriors. After a first period of cold shooting and sloppy ball handling, the team settled down and played the ball that they are capable. Zeller led all scorers with 20 points.
