i Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Jan. 22 1925l»|<^ Nick P. Steilen is now the new postmaster at the McHenry office. Thomas J. Walsh has turned over the postmastership to h& successor after more thart^jyp terms of service. The new^r appointed postmaster will return the services of Miss Lor<s®lf Steffes who has assiited Mr. Walsh in the office during the past few years. George Stoffel, the successful candidate for carrier on route 3, succeeds Albert Justen who has acted as the carrier since the resignation of Jos. N. Miller last spring. Mrs. John Thies, assisted by her daughter, Mrs. A. Gausden, entertained the eighborhood ladies at a one o'clock dinner at her home on Maple avenue. John Givens and Weston Bacon attended the skating tournament held at Lords Park, Elgin. Fanny Levinson celebrated her tenth birthday anniversary by.entertaining ten of her little friends at the home of her parents on Main street. After several weeks of negotiating one of the biggest land deals ever put over in this section of the county has been consummated and by the transfer the Hanly estate property located south of the McHenry city limits on the McHenry Crystal Lake road has passed from the ownership of the heirs to that of Robert J. Commings and Joseph Hoff, Chicago realtors. The track which has changed ownership had been owned by the Hanlys since 1837. Mrs. George Meyer passed away at her home Jan. 17 after an illness of a year in duration. She had been a resident of this city and community since 1872. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Jan. 24, 1935) The 1935 United States census of agriculture started in McHenry County Tuesday with eight enumerators starting on their work. Howard Cairns will cover Greenwood and McHenry townships. As a pretty mid-winter wedding held Jan. 19 at St. Mary's church Miss Emily Smith and Joseph M. Freund were united in marriage. Father Nix officiated at the ceremony. James N. Sayler was elected president of the McHenry Country club held at the city hall Skating on the river during the past two weeks has been great fun, but two little girls who live near the river, Mitzi and Joan Durland, had a dangerous experience one day last week when Mitzi fell into a "hole in the ice. She was able to hang on to the ice and her sister pulled her out. A card party was held at the Volo club house for the benefit of the McHenry Brewer's baseball team of Volo. The evening was spent in playing five hundred, eucher and dancing. A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lange at Connorsville, Ind., Jan. 17. The little girl has been given the name of Mary Ann. Mrs. Lange was formerly Miss Hazel Bacon of McHenry. McHenry Chapter, .Order of the Eastern Star, will sponsor its second annual masquerade dance at Stoffel's hall, West McHenry. Music will be fur­ nished by a four piece or­ chestra and the grand march will begin at 10:30. A fine line of prizes have been donated by local business men with several, special prizes which will be open for spectators. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 2, 1950) ,7 Mrs. Fred Kamholz, 72 years old, for more than fifty years a resident of McHenry, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Main street, Jan. 28. Now on the shelves of the McHenry city library located in the city hall there are close to 100 books that have been purchased by the library committee during the last six months. Daniel A. Justen, who is associated with his father, Peter M. Justen, in the un­ dertaking establishment bearing the latter's name, has been named McHenry township fund drive chairman for the Red Cross campaign the first part of March. Once again congratulations are in order for Math Niesen of McHenry who Jan. 29 observed his eighty-sixth birthday an­ niversary. Announcement was made this week that newspapers which have been published by the Northern Illinois Publications, Inc., namely the Woodstock Journal, the Hun­ tley Review and the Hebron News, have been purchased by the B.F. Shaw Printing com­ pany, publishers of the Woodstock Daily Sentinel. Plans are under way to bring about consolidation of the Journal, Review and News with the Sentinel by Feb. 11. Effective March 1, the West McHenry post office in existence many years will be discontinued as an independent office and instead will be established as a finance station of the McHenry office on Riverside drive. It has been designated as "West McHenry Station." TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Jan. 28, 1965) A tragic highway accident took the life of a sixteen year old spring Grove girl, Patricia Todey, early Friday evening, Jan. 22, as she was taking her brother, Gregory, 14, to a bus which was to transport the Marian basketball team to Elmhurst. Gregory escaped unhurt. Two McHenry high school graduates were among students at Eastern Illinois university, Charleston, to be honored for 'academic achievement for the fall quarter. Carla Dietz received high honors and Trudy Freund received honors. 49 Postmaster Leroy Smith announced this week that the new mail collection hour in boxes throughout the city, set at 4 o'clock rather than 5 p.m., is in effect Sundays and holidays only. St. John the Baptist Catholic church was the setting for a lovely wedding Saturday, Jan. 23, which united in marriage Miss PatriciaMary Marganski and Mr. William Carl Lin- dholm. Rev. Fr, Howard Melzer of Hales Corner, Wis., cousin of the bride officiated. Miss Jane Nye of Bay View Lane, McHenry, will be among eighty-five nursing sophomores who will be honored at the annual capping ceremony at Marquette university, Sunday, Feb. 17. Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Adams of Maple avenue, McHenry, observed their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary on Jan. 20 and were honored on two oc­ casions. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gies announce the birth of their second son, Jeffery Joseph, Jan. 22._ Shortening Tip Tired of scraping for that last bit of shortening?
