A week later he moved but before he left he was very nice and gave me his address. Should I write to him or not? Why? OUR REPLY: Like everybody else you have a natural desire to communicate. You want to share your thoughts and feelings with others. Those are the reasons why you should write to him--if you want to Take responsibility for what you do or don't do. Especially in this case, you should decide Be clear he's the person you want t#* communicate with. If so, the rest should be easy. Editorial Comment: The Gold Fizzle It is good Americans didn't rush to buy gold, which became available to private individuals for the first time in decades on Jan. 1. If they had, and if the price had been pushed even higher than it was at the start of the month (about $200 an ounce), many would probably have suffered heavy losses in the near future. The price has fallen sharply in recent days, removing some of the glamour and romance from gold ownership. Gold may well be a good hedge against inflation and other dangers, if bought at the right price. Nothing is a good buy bought at the wrong price. There still may develop*? healthy U.S. market for gold. And the price may yet rise to new highs. But gold pays no interest, costs money to keep and offers many opportunities for flim-flam operators and operations. The Great Films In recent months Americans have been offered new versions of many classic stories and films, some have been made for television--and, as would be expected, they are the least attractive. Among them were "Great Expectations," and before that "Treasure Island." A new version of "Robinson Crusoe" was recently shown. None of the later versions approached in quality earlier film masterpieces, with masterful character performances, of the same great stories. The all-time great film^are available, could be shown in black and white. Yet show-biz types, to make a new buck, themselves, undertake to produce new versions. At today's costs, they cannot match the scenes of grandeur and adventure in many of the old greats. The acting is inferior in almost every case. RIVERSIDE DR. 385-4426 McHENRY FREE DELIVERY SERVICE television has never captured the genuine feel of the average American, nor the sensitivity of fine character acting ) The great films of all time can seldom be improved upon by modern-day producers, especially aiming at television or influenced by U.S commercial television. v March Of Dimes The annual fund-raising drive through the March of Dimes is now in progress. The worthiness of this cause cannot be doubted. It started~back in the 'thirties and has continued since then. These drives resulted in the Salk arid Sabin vaccines being developed through the support of the March of Dimes funds. Polio, since the development of the vaccines, has been almost controlled through vaccinations. _ _ The March of Dimes has branched out into many other activities besides polio, and much has been accomplished in the area of birth defects It should be noted that the March of Dimes is not a member of the United Fund, and is maintained independently of the drive conducted by the United Fund. This is the choice of the March of Dimes itself. 9 On Music America is a land of such diversified background we enjoy all kinds of music from all over the world. In addition, as the music gimmick center of the world, we hear every new version, twist and arrangement--every weird sound, far-out innovation and modern- day fad. It might be well for broadcasting stations to keep in mind, however, that there is a generally-recognized library of great music-^which does not grow old and which is as up-to-date today as it was when it was composed and arranged. This reference isn't only to classical music; there is much semi- classic and popular music in this category, and the all-time fine arrangements are just as timely and appreciated today as ever before. Please, can't we hear more of something proven and established as good music? Dishonest Books Since exposure of the fraud involving a book about Howard Hughes, which resulted in some involved going to jail, other questionable books have been coming under scrutiny. Much doubt is being cast on several current books about underworld characters; some are described as absolute phonies, intended to bilk the public. This they often do, because sensational or crime stories often bring big advances. Readers of books, and no one can be educated without reading worthwhile books, should be careful to learn something about authors, about sources, footnotes and references, perhaps even the publisher. There £re New York houses, unfortunately, more interested in a fast buck than in carefully authenticating facts or authors' accounts. Let the buyer beware! Bennys Legacy One of the more depressing factors about the recent death of Jack Benny is the realization that this old-time comedian's style is going the way of some of the better things of life. Benny's humor was soft and gentle, not the fast-paced, high- pressure shouting of television and show-biz stuff passing for humor today. It was more in the style of the British theater and British humor, and Benny was popular in England] where so many American screamers are flops. Benny did more to an audience with a look or a pause than most comedians are able to do falling into a barrel of oil or taking a pie in the face. It was artful, sophisticated humor he gave Americans, and badly needed in these fast-moving tension-filled times.
