WENDY JEAN DIEKHOFF ENGAGED - Mr. and Mrs Wendell Diekhoff of rural Delavan announce the engagemnt of their daughter, Wendy Jean, to Michael Koeppen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rey Koeppen of McHenry. Miss Diekhoff graduated from Millikin university in 1974 and is now employed teaching second grade at Manito. Her fiance, a graduate of the University of Illinois, is employed as a pharmacist at a Springfield hospital. A July wedding is planned. Sweet Adelines Hold Guest Night January 28 The McHenry chapter of Sweet Adelines will be holding a guest night Jan. 28 at 7:15 p.m. in the basement of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church on Green street, McHenry. Anyone interested in becoming a Sweet Adeline or anyone who would just like to come out and enjoy a fun evening is invited to attend. An interesting program is being planned, including special entertaining quartets from the McHenry chorus; McHenry Sweet Adelines in performance; A comical rendition by "The Happy Times Four" of a song which won them a first place ribbon in the category of audience reaction in competition recently, and also some "goodies" to please the musical appetite. * It is the intention of this special guest night to better inform interested people on the purpose of Sweet Adelines and the art of women's barbershop singing and also to add to the membership of the McHenry chapter. Those who attend are under no obligation to become a member. The evening is being planned for their en­ tertainment. Baby-Sitting Clinic In County Open To All Ages "Baby-sitting involves everyone." says Joanne Cor- nelison. chairman of the McHenry County Women's committee. McHenry county Farm Bureau. This program is for younger adults who are in the "baby-sitting age" but also for many others. A film entitled "My Children are Safe. - Are Yours.?" featuring Lucinda and Cathy Robb. grandchildren of the late President Lyndon*-B. Johnson, and starring his daughter, Mrs. Charles (Lynda) Robb, will be shown. The film actually is staged in their home in Charlottesville. Va. A special invitation is issued to all grandmothers and grandmothers-to-be to introduce them to La Leche league and its philosophy of '*good mothering through breastfeeding." t La Leche League was founded for the purpose of giving information and en­ couragement. primarily through personal help, to mothers who want to nurse their babies. The league feels the nursing mother, especially in the early weeks, needs all the support that she can get. Her' mother or mother-in-law is often the most influential support she has. It is with this in mind that La Leche League has planned this special evening Topics discussed will include the advantages of breastfeeding and ways in which new mothers and grandmothers ̂ can help each other adjust to their new roles. All women who are interested in nursing their babies are welcome and are urged to in­ vite their mother, mother-in- law, or other female relative. Nursing babies are always welcome. Mardi Gras Ball Proceeds Benefit McHenry County The Elgin Catholic Social Service will hold its twenty- sixth annual Mardi Gras ball Saturday, Feb. 1, at St. An­ drews Country club, Rts. 59 and 64. Festivities will begin at 9:30 p.m. The Mardi Gras ball is held in the tradition of providing an outlet for fun and laughter in a carnival at­ mosphere before entering into the Lenten period of fasting and self-denial The proceeds from the donations received for the tickets and from the patrons will supplement the funds received from United Way of Elgin, the Dundee Community Chest and the St. Charles Community Chest. These funds help to provide community oriented services for families and individuals throughout parts of Kane and McHenry county. A new office has recently been opened in St. Charles. The Elgin Catholic Social Service provides Family and Children Services, in­ cluding professional Coun­ seling Service to families and individuals, Child Care and Placement and assistance to Unmarried Parents. Shirley Quist Accepted For MCC Nursing Shirley Quist of 605 N. Hill road, McHenry, learned Tuesday that she has been accepted into the two-year nursing program at McHenry County college. She will begin that program in the fall of 1975. Mrs. Quist, the mother of four children, is a 1957 graduate of Wauconda high school. She is now in her second semester at Continue Card Tourney Of NCSF Court The regular meeting of St. Agatha Court 777, National Catholic Society of Foresters at Johnsburg, will be Tuesday evening, Jan 21, at 8 o'clock in the Community club hall. Following the business meeting, the second round of the current card tournament will be played. This year euchre has been added to pinochle and canasta, and there is still time to enter. PTO To Meet Staff Members Next Tuesday The Johnsburg PTO will hold a general meeting in the Ringwood school multi-purpose room at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21. The program will include the introduction of staff members and a walk-through. A special portion to be presented by the school is based on the theme. "Ringwood Special: Pulling for an Enriched Education". Lillian Felsch Luncheon Guest A group of friends met at the McHenry country club Jan. 9 for a delicious luncheon honoring Mrs. Lillian Felsch of Whispering Hills. Mrs. Felsch will be leaving the community in the near future. Since she moved to this community in September of 1963, she has beeen very active. Mrs. Felsch served on the board of directors for two years when the Whispering Hills association was started with the presentation of the com­ munity center. After expressing her thanks to friends who hosted the luncheon, Mrs. Felsch presented a rendition of a song she had written, based on the tune, "Let the Rest of the Worid go by", used on several oc­ casions at the center. Her words were: "For someone like' you, For friends kind an 1 true. I chose to leave it all behind, To come and find a place that's known, A place thaf 's grown, Just a place we call our own; I found love and peace. And friendship never ceased, Out here among my friends. Ladd built a little nest, for my retirement rest. This place called Whispering Hills". Mrs. Kenneth Larsen of Algonquin will - present "Wildflowers - an Artist's View".It's a beautiful array of wildflowers - in a distinctly different manner. Her originality, talent, and ex­ tensive knowledge of the wildflowers of Illinois is a delight to the eye and mind. Mrs. Larsen studied in the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, the Chicago Art Institute and Hull House. Her work has been exhibited at the Morton Ar­ boretum and many libraries in the Chicago area. This program is limited to our garden club members. If a member desires to bring a prospective member as a guest, please call Mrs. James Erickson. The meeting will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. as there is much business to discuss before the program begins at 10:30. Members will meet at the Community center.' Trip West Promised At Club's February Program When the McHenry Garden club members met recently, fftey learned the subject of the Feb. 25 meeting. John and Kitty Kohout will present "Westward Go Our Dreams. Members will be given a glimpse of the Old West and have an opportunity to reflect upon its ghost towns, roam the mountains and meadows, and observe shy inhabitants and flowers. They are promised a •hrill as they view the eternal mountains and vistas. This will be an invitational guest meeting. At the December gathering, a holiday buffet luncheon was enjoyed at the home of Mrs. Carl Rjetesel. The season was observed with pine cone favors made by Rose Glashagel, and there was a gift exchange. For many years the club has sent a large poinsettia plant to Valley Hi nursing home. They were also sent this year to honorary members, Beulah Gruenfeld and Lillian Cox. It was recalled that during 1974 three new members were welcomed to the club, Mrs. Francis (Estelle) Weiler, 921 S. River road, Mrs. Albin (Jean) Marrow, 3916 Clearbrook drive, and Mrs. Donald (Rose) Glashagel, 800 W. River Terrace. The year 1975 promises to be a busy one for the Garden club. A.F.S. Student Masatoshi Wada will be guest speaker Jan. 24 at the home of Mrs. Lester Smith, 311 N. Green street. Spring will bring a trip to the Chicago Flower show, followed closely by Arbor day. The Garden club believes that a good motto is, "plant now for a beautiful tomorrow". A plant sale is planned for May. the McHenry college for her academic work. Grade average, written application and interview wer«- all considered in making selections. Only twenty are chosen from applicants that sometimes number 100. When she completes her studies, Mrs. Quist will have her major in Nursing and an associate degree in Science.
