FRI - SAT - SUN 7:00 - 9:00 W Busy Cageis Weekend Faces Warrior In Conference Games by Dick Rabbitt The McHenry high Warriors fresh from victories over Mundelein and Marian Central last weekend take to the hard wood tonight at Dundee against the always dangerous Car- dunal's. Last year these two teams split, the Warriors winning 74 to 68 at McHenry, while the Cards blasted the Warriors at Dundee 84 to 60. The Card's last year's co- champs with Zion are off to a very slow start this season with a conference record of 1 and 3. Coach Dick Schmidt has said that his team will get better as the season progresses, but as yet they haven't proved the coach right at this stage of the conference season. Three lettermen are returning led by 6'7" Max Kipfer a senior center. Forward Gary Homuth at 6'2" and senior guard 5'11" Jay Traeger, along with Bill Sinclair and Scott Munson round out the Cardunal five. The Cardunals since the days of Coach Eugene DeLacey have long been known to be a tough basketball school, and regardless of their record the Dundee squad will be tough to beat at home. However, the Warriors are beginning to reach their peak. They, are averaging 80 points per game, highest in the con ference, and their aggressive man to man defense has literally stopped the opposition in the past few games. The Warriors are still in the thick of the conference race, and I'm sure they will be ready to take on the Cards tonight. Tomorrow night at West Campus gym the Barrington Broncos come to town. The past two seasons the Broncos' fortunes have taken a complete turnaround. They are struggling along with a 1 and 3 record, and last week they managed to defeat St. Charles 57 to 47 for their most con vincing win of the season. The Broncos are big. John Tichy 6'3" senior forward is the team's leading scorer, and one of the conference leaders. Ron Zilkowski a 6'7" 225 lb., center is back along with 6'3" Scott Jensen to beef up a towering front line for the Broncos. Both these ball games should be something to watch. So why not take off a weekend and enjoy basketball at its best. Watch the Warriors win two games and close in on the leaders in the North Suburban. McHenry High Wrestlers Down Cary Grove Team, Lose To Mundelein By Dick Rabbitt Coach Marty Sobzcak's "Rassling Warriors" broke into the second half of the wrestling season with a good team effort over Cary Grove on Thursday night by a score of 33 to 19. The Warriors scored 8 takedowns to Cary Grove's 4. Bill Preston, Ken Scanlin, Marty VanKanegan, Steve Lane, and Karl Swanson all gave out standing performances. This win along with the win over Lake Forest in December gave the Warriors their first back to back victories of the season. Friday night the Warriors traveled to Mundelein to try for three in a row, but were denied victory by a strong Mundelein squad. With the freshmen winning their match, and the J.V. squad showing promise, the Varsity could come up with only three wins in their match with the Mustangs. Ken Scanlin at 105 won his match to raise his record for the season to 12 and 2. The Warriors will be at home tonight against Dundee, and tomorrow partake in a double dual meet at Woodstock at 1 p.m. The sophs are at Harvard tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. Anyone interested in helping form a McHenry Wrestling Club is invited to stop at the special table at the conclusion of the Dundee meet tonight. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD 0 Insurance Since 1884 Stoffel & Reihansperger Phone 385-0 300 3438 W. Elm St. McHenr> SATURDAY - SUNDAY MATINEE 1:30 • ALL SEATS - 50* - "ALICE IN NEW WONDERLAND" paid to Dick Allen and Ron Santo should give the Sox a bundle to distribute to the deserving. Wilbur Wood wants a boost. He won 20 games, but lost 19. A pitcher with a 20-12 record has more bargaining power. Sox fans in these parts think Terry Forster was worked too hard after an injury. As Harry Caray said, "If Forster is out, there goes the franchise." The Cubs didn't have the kind of year that will bring big contracts. However, when Don Kessinger returns his unsigned contract, you know things aren't all honey and pie. We like a small town where an old friend like Bill Rothermel comes through our doorway for a chat. We worked the busy ticket booth together at the old Fox Pavilion 40 years ago and have been good friends ever since. Yep. We like a small town and the friends that go with it. Trying to select a "Speaker of The House" down in Springfield is getting sticky. Don't they have a woman in the crowd? --EARL WALSH , So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR 1 RON STINE Ken Henderson should have no trouble with the Sox front office. He had a super year and was named "Chicago Player of the Year." Ron came off the bench and exacuted some fine de fensive plays in last Saturdays game against Marian Central. Ron also scored 8 points in the McHenry 62-53 victory. WRESTLER BILL PRESTON Bill is one of the three Sophmore wrestlers on the Varsity Squad. He cap tured his 1st win at Cary- Grove with an impressive match score of 9-0. Bill has shown much improve ment and will be one of the finer wrestlers during the next two years. Just picked up a pen with imprint: "St. Jude-Pray for Me." That should get us off to a. good start - especially since we' don't have a brain cell working. Met Paul Walkington Sunday morning and he glanced at our hands to note that we weren't wearing those striped bag mitts he gave us. Can't let that happen again. Phferof the Week! BASKETBALL Walt Freund called to tell .us we goofed on dates in our story about Lou Bending. We sear ched and found an old picture dated 1906 and now think we weren't ajl wrong. But, when time permits we will be looking through the old records. We weren't attending many ball games in and about the turn of the century. ASK YOURSELF (but don't answer): Did you ever race to a fire and feel disappointed when there wasn't a big blaze? Did you ever look through the obituaries and feel a little disappointed that you didn't know any name on the list? Leo Heimer dropped in to say hello and go over old times. We like those visits and urged him to come again -- soon. Our visit was short. Contracts are mailed out and both Cubs and Sox players are less than happy. Look for some holdouts this year. The "Catfish" Hunter deal is sure to give players new ideas. When you're near it-- you'll hear it
