On The Sidelines With Dick Rabbitf By 1976 the Illinois High School Association, a pioneer in providing extensive interscholastic athletic programs for girls, may rank as America's No. l state-in terms of girls athletic participation and girls state tournaments offered. They will conduct athletic state tournament series for girls in: Golf, Tennis, Swimming, Field Hockey, and Archery in the fall of the year. Volleyball, Basketball, Gymnastics, Badminton and Bowling in the winter, and softball and track and field in the spring. In less than five' years, the if.H.S.A. will have developed more interscholastic athletic tournament participation opportunities for girls than any other state in America. The McHenry High ^School girls at the present participate in Tennis, Swimming, Field Hockey, Volleyball, Track and Field, Basketball, and Badminton. By 1976 girls athletics will hold twelve state tournament series, in comparison to eleven for the boys. It is anticipated that a class system based on enrollment could develop within the next few years. If this comes about it would occur first in the sport of volleyball and basketball. -- At the present time the Volleyball series is under way, with the state finals to be held Jan. 24 and 25 at Eastern Illinois University. 481 schools have participated in this tourney, and our gals at McHenry lost out in the Harvard District last week. An interesting note is that about 78,600 girls will participate in the girls interscholastic athletic programs this year, an increase of about 24 percent over the last school year, and nearly 200 percent above the first year of state tournament series competition two years ago. Approximately 184,000 boys participate in the Association's boys program. The Warriors really played some classy basketball last weekend. Not only did they score 94 points against Mundelein, but we must remember the fine defensive play of several of the Warriors. Steve Kasprzyk did an excellent job on Greg Boyle, fine sophomore guard of the Mustangs. Marty Zeller piayed a great defensive game against one of the leading scorers in the conference, PeteGeisser, and Kenne Ludwig although not scoring many points played a fine floor game. Steve Koerber and Tom Stark always do a good job of rebounding for the Warriors. That crowd at Marian Central Saturday night was a sight to behold. The gym was packed by halftime of the sophomore game. Freddie Meyer must have taken a Saturday afternoon nap, he wasn't the first in line to get a ticket. , Terry "Radar" Reilly really got the Warriors offense moving with his long outside shots. He must love to see the opponents in a zone defense, because he knows that Coach Ludwig will call upon him to get into the game. It was a good ball game, closer than the eleven point difference. Noticed at the final whistle, Coach Grover of the "Hurricanes" leaped off the bench to go over and congratulate Warrior coach Ken Ludwig. Fine sportsmanship was displayed by both teams and by fans on both sides of the floor. This is what high school athletics is all about. Fair play and sportsmanship, and no better example was displayed than last Saturday night at Marian. It is too bad that some segments of our society can't take a lesson from our young people. They are not always wrong. GUNBOAT PASSING THROUGH - That huge object that passed through the city Tuesday caught the attention of many. This picture was taken at the intersection of Crystal Lake road and Main street, where it stopped for a few moments. Above, the hauler, at left, and a state trooper helping the escort talk things over. Before he hurried on his way, the hauler answered the photographer briefly, "It's a naval gun boat, it belongs to the Navy and we're headed for New Orleans. Another will be passing through in a week." The driver's voice trailed off as he hopped into the truck with the parting words, "I gotta keep moving". With that he headed south. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD IMMOBILE NEWS Were you there? If you weren't at the Snowman Shuffle dance at the VFW last Saturday night you sure missed dancing and listening to a wonderful band. We know it was a terribly cold night to go out but it really was worth'it. Even if you didn't dance too much it was a good band to just sit and listen to. We want the people who worked so hard on this project to know how much they were really appreciated. With all this snow that the country has been having around us, it is hopeful that we will get some some day so as to ride our own trails. Remember it is important to be in contact with a club in your area if you wish to ride the trails. If you don't know who to contact ask your snowmobile dealer, he will help you too.
