PAGE 11-SUPPLEMENT TO THE McHENRY PLAIN DEALER-WED., JANU. 29, 1975 Sight-Sound Festival opens tomorrow A Festival of Sight and Sound, a city-wide exposition of the latest advances in electronic instruments for home and personal use, starts here tomorrow. On display for the first time at participating dealers' showrooms throughout the area will be the new 1975 models of color and black-and-white television, stereo radio, tape e equipment and electronic calculators from leading manufacturers. The Festival will spotlight the many improvements in home electronic equipment made possible by new technological developments, as well as the latest trends in styling and decor. Starring completely automatic tuning Starring in the Festival will be a new generation of color television with completely automatic tuning, su perior picture quality and greatly improved reliability The picture is brighter and sharper, with greater con trast and truer colors. i New 1975 chassis do away with all circuit tubes, sub stituting solid-state devices, for better performance, lower energy consumption How to purchase a set of ^stereophones and higher reliability. There's a new emphasis on high-performance port able color sets for 1975, with all of the deluxe fea tures heretofore found principally in expensive consoles. Black-and-white too Black-and-white televi sion sets will be on exhibit in virtually every conceiv able screen size, most of them at budget prices. The growing interest in good music reproduced with living realism is re flected in the soaring pop ularity of stereo compo nents and compact sys tems. The new instruments on display incorporate the widest variety of styles, features and prices in his tory. The so-called "compact system," designed for mounting in a bookshelf or on a small end table, usually includes a record changer, a stereo FM and AM receiver and two sep arate speakers. This year, an increasing number also feature cartridge tape players or recorders to provide an added source of stereo music. For the true audiophile and the connoisseur of music there are the stereo components -- either sold together as an ensemble or chosen individually. Al though they once occupied a rarefied price stratum appealing only to the afflu ent, components today bring the highest quality sound within the reach of the average family. Major feature A major feature of the Festival of Sight and Sound will be the oppor tunity to experience a completely new dimension in sound. This is quadra- phonics, or four-channel sound, the hottest news4n- audio for 1975. Fdf the first time, four-channel records and tapes are available in large quanti ties, and many FM sta tions are broadcasting quadraphonic sound. Ev ery manufacturer has sub stantially broadened its variety of "quad" equip ment and 1975 promises to be the first really big year for four-channel. Tape recorders and re producers reach a new plateau with the 1975 models. For high-fidelity reproduction, three types of tape decks are now available--cartridge, cas sette and open-reel. The cassette recorder, originally developed as a portable voice-recording device, has now achieved high-fidelity status as the result of new break throughs, including special noise-reduction circuits. Tape cartridges Tape cartridges, which once were available only for playing pre-recorded material, will be widely available as record-and- play Instruments. In radio, the biggest news is the digital clock and the weather radio. The digital clock radio, which shows the time in numerals instead of a con ventional dial, has now taken over 75 per cent of the clock radio business. The establishment of government-ope rated weather stations has in spired a new type of radio -- the "weather radio," JAN. 30. 31 & FEB. 1st \FQR MEN 7 ' WEYENBERG MASSAGIC & FOOT-SO-PORT CALUMET 20% TO 50% OFF \FOR THE FAMILY/ 20% TO Hush 50o/ Puppies 5°/° M BRAND SHOfS QLL \ FOR LADIES / LADIES 20% TO SNOW BOOTS 50% OFF \ FOR LADIES/ VINYL & SUEDE LOOK DRESS BOOTS Reg 21.95 $5 00 \ FOR CHILDREN/ CHILDRENS SHOES SC00 \ Reg. 9.95 to 14.95 \FOR THE FAMILY/ MISC. The newest home elec tronic product is the cal culator, that solid-state wizard which can balance the family checkbook, compute income taxes, keep track of the budget or calculate miles-pef'-gal- Picture perfect The new technical de velopments in the 1975 television models can be summed up in just one phrase: The picture's the thing. Most of the new color tuning systems are designed and developed to bring the best possible col or picture every time the set is turned on. TAPED VIA KADIO Quite often radio sta tions play music with the actual purpose of having listeners make recordings on tape. Taplrf#- music via -radio is very common. It is particularly useful if the station is broadcast ing a live concert which won't be made into a rec ord album or tape for re tailing. Ion as fast as you can push the buttons. For 1975, calculators have added the ability to solve more complex prob lems and, at the same time, have been simplified to make figuring even easier. And their prices are down. Yes, down! Sixteen years ago if you wanted stereophones you purchased an SP-3, the pioneering model offered in 1958 by Koss Corpora tion, Milwaukee, when it originated the concept of private, personal listening to music in the home with stereophones. Since then, the com pany's technology has con tinued to lead the state of the art. Its vast refine ments now provide a va riety of 18 stereophone models -- priced from $15.95 to $175--to meet in dividual preferences. There are dynamic ster eophones and electrostatic models; there are four- channel listening versions in addition to convention al stereo. There also is a model for monaural listen ing as well as stereo. For those who want to hear nothing but the mu sic, most Koss stereo phones feature an effec tive seal against outside noises. But, for those who prefer not to be fully.iso lated, there are hear- through versions which allow the listener to hear the doorbell or telephone, for example. In the mid-1970s, there fore, buying a set of stere ophones offers many op tions. Koss suggests that your first step in purchas ing a set should be to au dition several to discover which best suits your taste. Listen to each at least 10 or 15 minutes, to acclimate to this listening venture. SATURDAY ONLY DOUGHNUT * HOLES DOZ. FOR SAT. Clarity: make sure the sound does not blur, even at full volume. Lis ten for the bass; even in soft passages, low notes should not drop out. 2. Crispness: beware of high-frequency dis tortion. Music with cym bals is a good reference point; fine stereophones will deliver the natural , sound of cymbals. 3. Mellow, rich repro duction without sacrifice of clarity: try different volume levels and differ ent types of music. 4. Seal: make sure the 'phones fit firmly around ' the ears to provide an effective seal to cut out external noises. If you want to hear certain sounds and choose the hear-through variety, be certain the above repro duction qualities are maintained. 5. Comfort: the weight of the stereophones should be distributed properly and comfort ably on your head. 6. Quality: as a gen eral guideline, match the quality of the stere phone to the quality of your home entertain ment unit. After you've made your selection, discuss with the dealer the type of unit to which you will connect the headphone5: AMONG THE VARIETIES of stereophone* now available for private, personal listening to munir is thin Ko»» Model I RO-4AA, which features the first driver element* sperifir- ally designed for dynamic type 'phone*, resulting in superh sound reproduction.
