vl PAGE «- PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 29,1975 HE LOST HIS HEAD - The Libertyville wrestler found himself in trouble as McHenry's Matt Schuster works his special tip for a takedowniast Friday night. When all goes well, Matt collects 2 points for a takedown and at least two points for a near fall. This was a close match as the Libeftyville 112 pounder regained himself to capture a 1 point victory over Matt, Matt's season record now stands at 6-5. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) EARL WALSH 1 So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR C3me Saturday afternoon and we took off for Kenosha with Ed and Ethel Blake to see their daughter Nancy. (Their daughter and our niece). Picked up Nancy at Carthage College and headed for that S h a m r o c k r e s t a u r a n t recommended by Harold Phannenstill -- Erin Go Bragh -- the Bartley House. Got a bit of a shock when we went through the door and saw red decorations. Then saw they had Valentine Day theme going strong. There was plenty of green and some good Irish tunes as we gathered 'round for a fine feast. Asked the gray haired proprietor O'Meara if he ever heard of Harold Phannenstill. Indeed he did! Didn't meet the dark haired O'Meara, but will catch up to him the next time. In Chicago we have visited the famous Stock Yards Inn in the Back O' The Yards area. The Bartley House in Back O' The Tracks, but a lot of people find the way to their welcome mat. Back to the Carthage gym where we saw one of the rip- snortinest basketball games you would wish to see. The Carthage "Redmen" beat the strong Augustana "Vikings" 62 to 54 after a battle all the way. Augustana has a 3-letter center named Bruce Hamming who is 6'lf' with a great hook shot. But the Carthage boys were not to be denied in this one. They played it hard and played it smart. Speedy Larry Evans led the Carthage scoring and was the take charge guy when the chips were down and Coach Jon Swift directed a control game to protect a slim lead at the finish. WARRIORS APPLY PRESSURE - As is the rule with the McHenry Warriors, McHenry uses full court press during all of their games. This constant pressure wears out the opposition as was the case with Libertyville team last Friday night. Shown on the press are Steve Kasprzyk (15), Kenne Ludwig (11) and Marty Zeller (51). Libertyville Wallops McHenry Sophs 73-37 Coach Gary Collins sophomore cagers ran into a buzz saw Friday night at Libertyville and came home on the wrong end of the score 73 to 37. Playing the young "Cats" even up through the first period, the roof fell in during the second stanza as the young Warriors were outscored 19 to 5. The red hot shooting Libertyville squad continued to hit the basket, as they out- scored the locals 20 to 6 during the third period, and won easy 73 to 3/. Brian Miller with 10 points led the sophomores. It helps a team. Coaches and players didn't race for the shower room after the game. Nope They stayed around to meet and greet hundreds of excited fans. That was a game! Now the girl sports reporters are barging into the men's dressing or undressing rooms after games. Holy Hector! What next" Office seekers always want to debate the person in office. Not many of the "INS" fall for the game of the "OUTS". There are some changes made. The best high school basketball players in Illinois will have a Hall of Fame team. McHenry's own. Coach Ken Ludwig, has been chosen one of 33 coaches to select the team. Final selections will be made in Champaign at state tour nament time. It is a nice honor to have our Coach named. Art Boger. McHenry Old Timer, says. "Stay right in there". He remembers Lou Bending and a lot of old ball players. Art says of Walter Warner, "He not only stayed at Grandma Frisbie's rooming and boarding house -- he married her daughter Irene". Walter picked off a prize. Playing on the Wildcat floor, the Warriors battled a close game down to the last quarter and came out on top 57-45. The Warriors play two games at home this weekend. Marian Central Sophs Defeat League Leaders Last weekend, the Marian Central Hurricanes Sophomore basketball squad registered its biggest win of the season thus far as they topped undefeated league leader, Immaculate Conception of Elrnhurst 50-49, in ORANGE NIGHT The Pep Club at West Campus is requesting that everyone attending the North Chicago game Friday . night wear something orange. Their aim is to get a large crowd, enough to open up the upstairs balcony, and become in volved enough to cheer the Warriors on to victory over the Warhawks. Let's all come out Friday night and support this fine team. Warriors Take Second Place With 57 to 45 Win Over Libertyvillle Irene clerked in our uncle's store and always slipped in an extra piece of candy when you bought 5 for a penny. GUTTERS r IS SEAMLESS GUTTERS COLORS 385-9427 By Dick Rabbitt In a crucial battle for second place, the Warriors of Coach Ken Ludwig defeated Liber tyville Friday night 57 to 45. It was a game marked by numerous turnovers, 44 in all, and 21 committed by our Warriors. Also 39 fouls were called in the game. The "Cats" jumped off to a quick 6 to 2 lead, and then didn't score again for over 5 minutes. During this time Koerber, Kasprzyk, and Kenne Ludwig were doing most of the scoring as the Warriors ran up 15 straight points. The Warrior defense just wouldn't let the Cat offense get set up in their patterns. Leading 17 to 6 in the closing seconds, the Warriors became careless, and the Cats managed to get back 2 baskets to trail at the period 17 to 10. In the early going of the second period the Cats con tinued on their way, getting 8 straight points to go into the lead 18 to 17, and continued to play the Warrios even for the remainder of the half, as Stark's basket with 5 seconds remaining put the Warriors ahead 27 to 26 at the in termission. McHenry still led 31 to 30 with 5 minutes remaining in the third stanza, when the Cats made 4 turnovers, which resulted in 4 Warrior buckets to lead 39 to 32 going into the final period. In the final period the teams exchanged baskets and with 1:20 remaining Libertyville trailed by a score of 50 to 45, when the Warriors scored the last 7 points to win going away 57 to 45. The full court press bothered the Wildcat offense, and at times they seemed confused. Playing without their tallest player Pete Ruffian a 6-5--, the smaller Wildcats outrebounded the Warriors 27 to 21 Libertyville slowed the Warriors down and forced them to play their game. When the Warriors can't 1 run and gun, then they must resort to their defense and once again it paid off. The win leaves the Warriors in sole possession of second place with a 6 to 1 record, and 13 and 4 for the season. Libertyville dropped to third place with a 5 and 2 record and is now 7 and 10 for the season. Friday night the Warhawks of North Chicago come to town for another important game. The Knights of Elmhurst entered the game with a perfect slate of 7-0 in West Suburban Catholic conference action and had defeated Marian in an earlier meeting. However, the Hurricanes rose to the occasion and played some fine, aggressive basketball. Balanced scoring, rugged rebounding, and con sistent floor play were the keys to victory The 'Canes led 33-31 at halftime and the game ended in regulation at 48-all. But a Dave Crook lay-up in the overtime provided the victory margin.
