Extend Service Scope Of Soil-Water District PAC.E 9 PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 1975 The original scope of the McHenry County Soil and Water district to help farmers with agricultural land extends far beyond that initial purpose, Robert Fleck, president, ob­ served as he talked to district members at the twenty-ninth annual meeting in Marengo last week. Fleck, who along with Kenneth Fiske, Woodstock, was reelected to the board, listed the varied groups with which the district provides its ser­ vices : county and city planning commissions, engineers, real estate developers, in­ dustrialists and the county Zoning Board of Appeals. Use of the district services to determine the best use of land as prescribed by county or­ dinance when zoning changes are desired helps conserve and put to the best use "The soil,' water and air-all life-giving squrces," he said. In reviewing services provided landowners, Sam Haning, conservationist with the Soil Conservation district, talked about the growing awareness by farmers in minimum tillage-using such techniques as strip cropping, chisel* plowing and planting in rubble rather than plowing. He showed slides illustrating terraces with tile lines and waterways with grass control erosion. He suggested more landowners consider building windbreaks with trees available from the District and said development of shallow water areas for wildlife could be achieved with good results. Among problems which persist are drainage ditches and brush and erosion of stream banks. Haning said since 1947, SCS personnel assisting the District provided technical assistance to construct 383 farm ponds, almost 3 million lineal feet of tile lines, 543,150 feet of drainage ditch and 1,216 acres in contourstrip-cropping. He said district cooperators have planted more than 4 million pine trees, multiflora rose and bush honeysuckle, and improved 11,597 acres of pasture. In recent years, the district has provided valuable soil interpretative information to indicate the limitations of land areas for urban use, as septic tank disposal fields, suitability for building foundation, water hazards, and limitations for agricultural use. District awards were presented. Congressman Robert McClory presented Richard Peters with the "District Environmental Teacher of the Year" award and David Cash, district secretary, presented a similar award to Steve Aavang, Hebron. Peters was in the kindergarten through fifth grade competition and Aavang won his recognition in the sixth through twelfth grade category. Fleck presented Mr. and Mrs. John Kooistra, Alden, with the "District.- Conservation Family of the Year" award. Koositra for years has typified the con­ servation-minded farmer who us&s minimum tillage, builds wildlife areas, and follows good land use. He has built over 10 miles of tile on his farm, which he purchased in 1950. Five acres planted to trees 25 years ago is now a wild life refuge. Fleck said high school sophomores, juniors and seniors should apply for a scholarship enabling them to attend a conservation summer program course at one of the area universities.
