PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5. 1975 EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR "Orange Night" at West Campus last Friday night turned out to be a swinging party. While the crowd wasn't as large as it might have been, the old school spirit was much in evidence. And they did have people in the balcony. Fred Meyer presented us with an orange cane. Our better half succeeded in pinning an orange ribbon on our coat lapel, so we dug out a green flower for the other side to even up the decoration. 'Twas fun. As expected, the team from North Chicago came to play. They gave the Ludwig team all they could handle before the final buzzer showed a 63-57 Warrior victory. When the Warriors led by 10 points in the last half, it looked like they might pull away, but the visitors kept crowding. The big front line of Marty Zeller, Steve Koerber and Tom Stark did a great job. Steve Kasprzyk and his mate at guard, Kenne Ludwig, were a couple of fireballs on the floor with great ball handling, defense and point-making when needed most. Free throws really turned the trick. Subs took over when needed. It was a team victory all the way. Students in the cheering section roared "We want Rabbitt" late in the game when victory wasn't assured. Dick led a rousing cheer and everything went our way. In case you don't know by now, McHenry has a darn good basketball team this year. Taking in the McHenry Hospital annual dinner meeting at McHenry Country Club Saturday night, we missed the Kaneland game which the Warriors won after an all-out effort. The entertainer at the dinner meeting advised everybody to keep a sense of humor and showed amusing slides to emphasize his points. Brother, it takes a sense of humor to go through trying times in life. Guess we don't know all the girls. Just met Stanley Aim's wife this week. Says she is one of our readers. We like those kind of gals. Not being able to remember names is one of our greatest shortcomings. In a visit with the Lowell McGraws of Whispering Oaks, we mentioned the fact. Mrs. McGraw put us at ease with the remark -- "Join the club." It used to amuse us when our mother could relate details of happenings 50 years before, then forget what happened yesterday. We teased her about it. Sorry, Mom. Now we know. • The beautiful, but small McHenry Library is busting at the seams and will be enlarged soon if funds can be found. Tax-wise the library hasn't been a big burden to McHenry people. Many people have donated time, energy and money as they took great pride in their library. Anybody with loose cash would do well to donate. Sometimes it can oe used as a tax deduction. Some specify an amount in their wills to this popular project that does so much for so many. We have sounded off before about having space for historical items when space is available. The history of McHenry and the surrounding area is what we mean. We now find that June Stuart and Dorothy Uttich are gathering old pictures and papers concerning our area. Call the library if you have anything you would like to contribute and have preserved. There aren't too many around who can give facts on early McHenry. PICKUP- Most of us would be glag to pay as we go, if we could only catch up on where we've been. -BIT & PIECES NORTH SUBURBAN CONFERENCE BASKETBALL RESULTS Team W L Pts Opp's 1. SALAD J THE LONG ATTEMPT by Tom Stark failed here as Warriors Marty Zeller and Steve Koerber get set for the rebound. This 4th quarter action saw the Warriors remain just a few points ahead of the Warhawks as each team exchanged baskets. The Warrior win was the fifteenth of the season against just four losses. Friday night, the Crystal Lake Tigers travel here for a conference game. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Warriors Sweep Weekend Doubleheader North Suburban game. No gimmicks, no special nights, if you want to see a good basketball team perform, I suggest you come to West Campus next Friday night. The Warriors are for real. Fifteen opponents will attest to it. BOX SCORE The "Fighting Warriors" of Coach Ken Ludwig ran their season record to 15 and 4 with a pair of victories over the weekend. On Friday night before a huge crowd decked out in orange, the Warriors defeated North Chicago 63 to 57 in a North Suburban conference game. On Saturday night the Warriors defeated Kaneland 75 to 67. With Zeller, Koerber, and Kenne Ludwig all going for the hoop, the Warriors jumped off to an early lead against the Warhawks, but then hit a cold spell and had to settle for a 12 to 12 tie at the end of the first period. It was during the second stanza that the Warriors really won the game. In a matchup of two of the area's better centers Del Yarbrough of North Chicago, and our own Steve Koerber. Koerber let it be known who was going to be Number One. All the big fellow did during the second period, was hit for seven baskets and pull down four important rebounds, and along with the pass interceptions of Steve Kasprzyk, who must have thought he was back at Mc- Cracken Field. The Warriors pulled away to a 36-29 halftime edge. « With Koerber still setting the scoring pace, and the team playing exciting defense the Warriors still managed to hang on and go into the 4th and final period with a *47 to 41 lead. Offensive mistakes cost the Warriors numerous op portunities during the period. During the 4th period it looked as if the Warriors were really going to put the game in the icebox, but North Chicago always hung in there, and crept to within 3 points at the three minute mark. Then it was Kenne Ludwig's turn to take charge. The little senior guard hit a 20 footer, and 10 seconds later made two clutch free throws to put the Warriors ahead 56 to 49 at the 2:45 mark of the period. Barrett's basket narrowed the margin, and again Ludwig sank two more clutch free throws to put the Warriors ahead by 7. Wyatt's three point play again narrowed the margin, but Tom Stark's free throw along with Kasprzyk charity tosses again put the Warriors up by 7. Mitchell countered with a long one, but Zeller's basket at the buzzer sent the Warhawks down to defeat 63 to 57. Koerber's 29 points led all scorers. It was quite a ball game, twice in the last half the Warriors raced out to a 10 point advantage only to see the Warhawks come storming back. They . never lost their poise, which is the mark of a good ball club, and hung in there for the win. It was a wild and noisy Warrior crowd at the game. Decked out in orange attire, waving orange hankies, and fans in the balcony for the first time in years, had to have an effect on the play of the Warriors. They responded to the call and tucked away number 7 in the conference, still only one game back of league leading Zion Benton.
