Farm Bureau Plans For Garden-Nutrition Meet "Everyone's invited," says Mrs. Kenneth Cornelison, chairman of the Farm Bureau Women's committee, "to get in on the fun and learn about gardens." Mrs. Cornelison is talking about a two-part garden and nutrition program, beginning Monday, Feb. 24, at 10 a.m. in the Farm Bureau auditorium. "Believe it or not," adds Mrs. Cornelison, "garden season is upon us and we are confident that more people will delve into gardening this year. People need to turn to someone when they don't really know where to begin or have questions later on - we have the answer. They can come to the program and learn the when, why, and how, and what to do with the finished creation." The program Feb. 24 is open to the public and everyone is invited. There is no fee. Grandmother Of Thirteen Earns Music Degree When Lorena Esh Straub of Flint Creek drive, Rt. 1, Barrington, received her- Bachelor's degree in Music from DePaul university Feb. 2, she proved the exception, not the rule. The MCHS graduate of\ more than thirty years ago was probably the only one in her class of 650 with the distinction of being a grandmother of thirteen. The conferring of degrees took place at Medinah Temple. Mrs. Straub, who was an accomplished pianist during her days as a student at McHenry Community high school, started pipe organ lessons under Dr. Arthur Becker, dean emeritus of DePaul university, in the fall of 1967. He encouraged her to work for her degree, which she started the next semester. The youthful grandmother continued her education, at tending school part time while working as organist-director of St. Anne's church in Barrington. On May 21, 1973, she presented her senior organ recital at St. Vincent DePaul church, Chicago. Her academic courses were completed by August of 1974. When Mrs. Straub started at the university, she admits to having been apprehensive about her acceptance by young students. Happily, she said her fears were dispelled the first day. The new graduate and her husband, Anthony Straub, have three daughters, Mrs. James (Edna Mae) O'Mally of Aurora, Mrs. Larry (Yvonne) Pritchett of Roselle and Mrs. Harold (Margaret) McCall of Glen- dale, Ariz. Sale Profits Make Possible Club Dinner Seventeen members of the Town & Country Newcomers and their husbands enjoyed a delicious dinner at the Branded Steak House Saturday night. The main portion of the dinner was made possible through profits from last spring's rummage and bake sale. Members of the club in terested in needlecraft will meet each Wednesday morning at 9:30 at the home of Mrs. Harold Tokowitz for coffee and work sessions. Alsb being planned is a coffee and get- together each month for members and new girls in the community, in order to acquaint the latter with the club. The proceeds from the fashion show held Oct. 22 were given to Youth, Inc., for game equipment for the club. RETURN FROM TRIP Mr. and Mrs. Harry Sikora have returned from a vacation trip in the South. They spent eleven days in Braden, Fla., visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Paul Palmateer, former McHenry residents. Near Hot Springs, South Dakota, a visitor may inspect a bath tub, carved from solid rock by the Indians, for use with the mineral waters there. m GIFT FOR LIBRARY - President Robert Steiner of the McHenry Lions club, left, presents Harold Nye, McHenry Library board member, check for $200 to purchase large print books for the sight handicapped in McHenry area. „ VV J STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Vycital's Hardware 1228 N. The McHenry County Defenders are working along with the Johnsburg Junior high Student Council to see that trucks and workers are at the Market Place on W. Route 120 this Saturday from 9 until 5 to receive the bundled newspapers and magazines, flattened cans, and clean bottles and jars that have had all lids and other metal and plastic removed. Anyone with a quantity of properly prepared material who has no way of getting it to the Market Place Saturday should give . the McHenry County Defenders represen tative a call at 385-8512 before that day so that arrangements can be made for pick-ups. Johnsburg Junior high Campus Gym McHenry High Class. Sponsored by School Junior Student Council and the McHenry County Defenders remind everyone to flatten cans before bringing them1 to the Market Place. Cut out the tops and bottoms of the clean cans. Once the paper label is removed, put the lids inside the can and step on it to flatten it well. Beverage cans, which do not respond to most can openers, can be flattened with the foot or a sledge hammer. It is very important that the small metal rims and any other metal or plastic be removed from the bottles. Paper labels may be left on. Bring papers bundled for easy handling. There is free rope available for anyone needing some. People are encouraged to take some home with them so that they have enough on hand for proper tying of newspapers for future bundles. Recycling helps the en vironment by saving some natural resources. MARCH 22 Rummage Sale West "ANNUAL FUN NITf MARCH 1st at the VFW HALL 3002 W. RTE. 120 McHENRY ILL. STARTS 7:00 pm Til ?
