Wentworth of the McHenry Methodist church is of the belief that a sufficient amount of interest can be awakened among the citizenship here to warrant the opening of a public library in this city: McHenry is probably one of the few towns in this section which is without such an institution and the Plain- dealer feels certain that there are many who would welcome a library here. The Bolger Drug store on Green street is f undergoing quite extensive interior im provements. Already new window lights have been in stalled and the ceiling and walls painted. Thomas Kane, the decorator on the job, is now engaged in dressing up the fixtures and other woodwork. Col. Howard R. Perry, well and favorably known to many of the Plaindealer readers who grew up in this city, was cited by the war department for gallantry in action and awarded the silver star for his part in the capture of Fort ElCaney, Cuba, during the Spanish war. Charles L. Neuman. son of Mr. and Mrs. L.F. Neuman of this city and recently an em ployee of the Western Roofing company in Chicago, suffered a very painful accident when at work on a two story building when in some manner he lost his balance and fell to the ground below tearing the ligaments in his right leg so severely he will be laid up for at least two months. Several from Ringwood attended the basketball game here between the businessmen and the farmers. The farmers won FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files -of Feb. 21, 1935) Fourteen years ago, in 1921, a group of ardent , golfers organized the McHenry Country club.JMine hole courses were considered a sufficient test of golf in those days and a part of the Owen farm provided a suitable location. Six years later, the course was enlarged to eighteen holes. Two justices will therefore be elected this spring, one as our extra judge as the township has more than 2,000" voters and one to fill the vacancy caused by - the resignation of William J. Welsh who now lives in Woodstock. Mr. Hawley of RingWbod, will be the third judge as his term does not expire for two years. Noonan's garage is un dergoing repairs including a new roof, ceiling and wiring made necessary by the recent fire which caused a loss of $2,500. The roof is being put on by S.H. Freund. Raymond Henschel of McHenry, freshman student at Northwestern Military and Naval academy, Lake Geneva, Wis., has been awarded the Gold Bar medal offered to the cadet plebe winning the competitive drill at the close of each of the first three quarters of school. The award was made at the George Washington formal ball held at the academy. It is known as the Jarvis Period Drill medal A new entry in the Plain- dealer Birthday Book is John Scheid of Green street who observed the occasion of his eightieth birthday anniversary Feb. 23/ Mr. and Mrs. Peter A. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 25, 1965) The Plaindealer's longest time subscriber, Chester Goodman, walked into the office last Thursday afternoon to renew his paper for another year It was the seventy-first time he had performed the same service, starting with his initial visit to the office when he was a small boy of 9 in 1894. On March 31 of this year, he will mark his eightieth birthday anniversary. A thirty-nine year service record with Illinois Bell was chalked up by Norma C. Turner of Orchard Beach road, McHenry, before her retirement Feb. 1. All of these years were spent in one place, the Elgin business office. Harry O. Mueller, son of Otto E. Mueller of McHenry, has been employed by State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance company at its claim service office in DesPlaines Marine Private Keith R. Peters, son of Mr and Mrs. Melvin Peters of Trey road, McHenry, graduated Feb. 15 from recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S C. George Stefich of Wonder Lake was found dead Feb. 17 by a neighbor who went to his home Mr. Stefich was 74 years of age. In this capacity he is in charge of a group of at torneys who serve the VA regional office and the six VA hospitals in the state. His office is located in the VA regional office at 2030 West Taylor, but he is staff member of the General Counsel's office in Washington, DC., where the announcement of his ap pointment was made.
