EARL WALSH So I Hear Northern lllini Bowmen News As Athletic Director Bill Blankenhorn remarked, "That was a fun game." It may have been fun for the McHenry Warriors and their followers, but poor Dundee went down under a 101-67 barrage here Saturday night. No way can they say Coach Ludwig tried to run up the score. He used everybody but the cheerleaders in his lineup. The Pep Club hollered for 100 points and the subs showed real hustle to put it on the board. Two small, but nifty ball handlers, Tony Christy and Handy Blankenhorn, were flashing all over the floor when Tony sank a swisher for 100. Randy put frosting on the cake with a free throw. Of course, the starting lineup and top subs had their fun with some razzle-dazzle plays before they were mercifully yanked for the night. We can say for the visiting Cardunals that they never quit. Nope. They hustled all the way. They simply do not have the players this year to match the Warriors. After the game, Dick Habbitt presented Coach Ludwig with a cake to honor him for his 100th victory since coming to McHenry. Yes. It was a fun game. The mother of a 6-year-old met him as he got off the bus and asked, "How was your school day?" "Mom," he replied, "today our teacher asked me whether I had any brothers or sisters, and I told her I was an only child." "And what did she say, dear?" "She said. 'Thank goodness. ' SPORTS EDITOR. Hear Ye! Hear Ye! On Wednesday evening of this week at the hour of 7 p.m. the newly formed "Girls Soft ball League" will elect officers at a meeting in the Fire House. There are three age groups, 7 to 16 years. Parents-- you are needed at this meeting or the league will not get off the ground. Last week we had a report in "ATHLETES AWAY" about Gary Hosier's honors at Nor thern Illinois University. Somebody added a note to use this week to tell us that Gary finished the year with 45 pass receptions. We aren't surprised. They used to call him sticky fingers when he hauled in all those passes for the Warriors. He is a good one. Dr Kidd of Riverstream Drive was in to see us last week, dressed in an outfit you would admire. A moose jacket made by Eskimos many years ago was purchased in Canada. Beautiful hat and boots were purchased in Kansas. For sure the doctor won't have to worry about walking down the street and meeting somebody wearing the same kind of jacket. It 's a prize. Joe on Phone: "I 'm Lord and master in my own home and I can play poker anytime I want to...Just hold on a minute while I find out if I want to." From the first minute to the final minute of play, 13 McHenry Cagers hit for scores to give their coach, Ken Ludwig, a 100 point game for his 100th win as a Warrior Coach. Above, with 30 seconds remaining, Tony Christy (12) hits for that magic point as the cheerleaders (inset photo) jump for joy. Moments later, Randy Blankenhorn sunk a free throw to end it as the Warriors collected their 10th conference win 101-67. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Soph Five Weekend Splits Tilts Warriors Rout Cards 101-67 To Ring Up 100th Win For Coach Ludwig By Dick Rabbitt The McHenry sophomores falling behind 12 to 3 at the end of the opening period could not catch up and fell to Barrington Friday night 47 to 36. Numerous mistakes and poor shooting in the first period proved the young Warriors downfall as they held their own with the Ponies throughout the remainder of the game. Brian Miller* with 10 points led the local scoring. EDGE DUNDEE IN THRILLER After a poor showing on Friday night the "Cardiac Kids" did it again to Coach Gary Collins. Going into the final period the sophs led by 14 points and Coach Collins was about to relax, when the young Cards caught fire and tied the score with seconds remaining. With time running out and the buzzer blaring away, Billy Hurckes 25 ft. baseball throw went in the hoop for a 56 to 54 win. It was the 8th game of the season that a game was decided by three points or less. It is no wonder that the young coach is a bundle of nerves before a ball game. So come on sophs take it easy on the man, you don't want him to grow old before his time. Coach Ken Ludwig won his 100th game as Warrior coach, and the team responded with 101 points against a hapless Dundee Cardunal five. Before the game Coach Dick Schmitt of the Cards said "He Barr. Ken Scanlin, Steve Lane, and Bob Eppel all won cham pionships at the Woodstock District over the weekend. Coach Marty Sobzcak's Warriors also put on a splendid performance to edge out the Tigers from Crystal Lake for third place. Scanlin at 105 won the championship with a 4 to 0 decision. Earlier Saturday Ken defeated an old rival, Sather of Crystal Lake, 4 to 1 in overtime. Sather had defeated Ken twice and they fought to a tie in the three previous meetings bet ween the two fine wrestlers. When the chips were on the table Ken came through and then went on to become the 105 lb. champion. Let's Look At The Records Ken's record is now 23 wins 4 losses and 2 ties. Steve Lane is the 167 lb. champ of the Woodstock District. His record is now 20 wins 5 losses and 2 ties. Bob Eppel is the heavyweight champ. His record is now 15 and 4 and after a slow start is coming on like gangbusters George Hansen at 145 and Bill Preston at 98 both won third place medals for the Warriors. Coach Sobzcak was well pleased with the performance of the squad and the happy coach is hoping for three more championships next «»week at Rockford. Antioch was the district winner with Woodstock placing second. The Warriors edged Crystal Lake 471 - to 47 for third place honors. was not going to pull a Barrington and stall", and also remarked he would run with the Warriors. Well, he tried and failed, but that is the penalty you pay if you want to play the Warrior's game. With the team "sky high" awaiting this game and the crowd in a roaring mood the WarViors wasted no time in the action. Kenne Ludwig put the Warriors ahead at 6:30 and the rout was on. With Ludwig and Kasprzyk shooting over the zone, and Stark and Koerber scoring from underneath, the Warriors jumped out to a 20 to 10 first period lead. With all five starters potting them from all over the court, the Warriors ran up a 32 to 12 margin at the halfway mark in the period. Then the three trusted reserves got into the action, and Reilly, Tommy Ludwig and big Ron Stine took over and continued the onslaught against the Cards and the Warriors led at halftime 47 to 20. PASSING -- WOW! The third period was more of the, same. With precision like behind the back passing, and the fast break working to per fection the Warriors outscored the helpless Cards 22 to 2 during the first four minutes to take a 69 to 22 lead. The merciful coach again went to his bench and the reserves kept up the good work to put the score at the end of the quarter 81 to 41 in favor of the Warriors. Midway in the final period the Warrior score reached 90, and the student cheering section kept chanting 100. As the team got closer to the magic mark the fans became more vocal, and with 27 seconds remaining Tony Christy hit a 15 footer for the 100th point the gym was in a bedlam. Seconds later Randy Blankenhorn calmly put in a free throw for the 101th point of the night for the Warriors. COACH TAKES SW IM It was a happy group of boys and coach after the game. Coach Ludwig was presented a cake marked 100th Win, and the team treated the happy coach to a dunking in the swimming pool. It was the Warriors 19th win of the season and 10th in North Suburban conference play. Next Saturday night is the final home game of the season. It is also Parents' Night. Why not come out and watch this splendid team play their last game at home. You won't be sorry. BOX SCORES "ANNUAL FUN NITf MARCH 1st at the VFW HALL 3002 W. RTE. 120 McHENRY ILL STARTS 7:00 pm Til ?
