Below are some representative queries. Ad ditional information may be obtained at any VA office. Q - Can veterans reserve space in a national cemetery? A - Any ^veteran whose separation from the service was for reasons other than dishonorable is eligible for burial in a national cemetery, but advance reservations are not accepted. Each veteran is entitled to one grave. Next-of- kin must share space with the deceased veteran. Q --1 entered military service before completing high school. I was honorably discharged last month after four years of duty. Am I eligible for GI Bill benefits while finishing high school. A -- Yes. Veterans in your category may receive educational assistance without charge against basic en titlement. That entitlement thus remains available for post- secondary schooling. Q - I receive 20 per cent VA disability compensation. I am <>6 years old and retired. May I waive this compensation and receive pension. A' - You should file a claim lor pension benefits. Con sideration will be given to medical information, your period of active military duty, and income and net worth in formation. After considering these factors you will be paid the greater bejig/jjt. Q - I was discharged about 25 years ago after three years of military service. Is it too late to apply for a GI home loan from the Veterans administration? A - No. There has been no deadline for applying for this benefit which is available to veterans of World War II and later periods since enactment of the Veterans Housing Act of 1970. Q - Does the compensation check I receive monthly from the Veterans administration for a 20 per cent service-connected disability include allowances for my children? A - No. A veteran's service- connected disability must be rated 50 per cent or more before allowances can be paid for dependents. A - I was honorably discharged last month after three years of military duty, none of it in Vietnam. Am I eligible for the GI Bill? A -• Yes. Veterans separated after Jan. 31, 1955, with an other than dishonorable discharge after at least 181 days of active duty, have eligibility for 10 years or until May 31, 1976, whichever is later. Geographic location of service has no bearing on eligibility. The Veterans administration has advised veterans recently separated from military ser vice to keep current with im portant federal and state op portunities and obligations as part of their transition. Officials noted that in the press of returning to civilian status, veterans sometimes overlook matters which could affect their well-being. To insure a smoother tran sition after discharge, VA suggests the following timetable: ...As soon as possible, register with local state em ployment service office. (Veterans have up to one year to apply for unemployment compensation, but applications filed after a long period of unemployment could result in a lower rate of unemployment compensation.) ...In ten days, report address to Selective Service through local board (in person or mail.) ...In thirty days, register with Selective Service or any local board, if not already registered. ...Within ninety days, apply to former employer for reemployment. ...Up to 120 days (up to one year if totally disabled at separation from service) convert Servicemen's Group Life insurance to low cost five- year Veterans Group Life in surance. ...Within one year from date of notice of VA rating on disability, apply to VA for GI life insuranfce based on service- connected disability. ...Within on£ year, apply to VA for dental care. ...As soon as possible, apply to VA for GI education or training, which must be completed within ten years of separation ffom military service. VA noted there are no time limits for veterans to: * ..Apply to the agency for a GI loan guaranty to buy, build, or improve a home. ...File claim with VA for compensation for service- connected disabilities or disease, or apply for hospital care.' ...Seek assistance from local state employment offices in finding work or entering Labor Department job-training programs. ' ; There are seventy-two veterans assistance centers around the country to help veterans get a fresh start in civilian life, VA said.
