(DON PEASLEY PHOTOGRAPHY ) American Legion | Auxiliary News Bv Pearl Cooper Mrs. Maurice Kubby, national president of the American Legion auxiliary, has announced that there will be two gift scholarships, one in the amount of $1,500 and one in the amount of $1,000 as part of the Auxiliary Loan, Education & Scholarship committee. RULES: 1. Candidates for this award shall be daughters of veterans who serve during eligibili ty dates for membership in the American Legion 2. Candidates must be in their senior year or graduates of an accredited high school, but they may not have attended an in­ stitution of higher learning. 3. Previous National President's scholarship recipients are not eligible for further competition. If a unit receives more than one applicant, the unit selects the winner. A unit may submit only one candidate for department competition. 6. Applications for National President's scholarships must be secured from the unit president (Lauretta Homo) or unit Auxiliary Loan & Scholarship chairman, Theresa Huska, in the community in which the applicant resides. The unit president, in turn, requests the application from department headquarters. Application Requirements: 1. Completed application form and a photograph of the applicant. 2. Four letters of recom­ mendation from the following: a. Principal or Counselor ot the school from which she is or will be a graduate. b. Clergyman of the ap- pliant's choice. c. Two citizens, other than relatives, certifying to the applicant's character and ideals of Americanism and scholastic achievement. 3. A letter of authorization from the unit president. 4. An original article con­ sisting of not more than 500 words on a topic of the ap­ plicant's choice, for instance, the purpose of seeking higher education or the field in which the applicant wishes to matriculate. Two copies of the article are required - the original and a duplicate. 5. A certified transcript or photographic copy of high school grades. 0. A brief statement of the military service of father. 7. The complete application packet must be returned to the unit president, Mrs. Homo, prior to March 15, 1975. In turn, the unit shall submit, by April 2, 1975, the complete ap­ plication packet to the department chairman. The candidates will be judged on the following basis: a. Character-20 percent- High standards of conduct; keen sense of right; strength of character; adherence to truth and conscience; belief in God. b. Americanism-20 percent- Fine ideals, love of country; ability to accept within a few years, a citizens's respon- sbilities. c. Leadership-10 per- cent'Ability to lead and to accomplsih through group action, personal magnetism, guidance and thought of others. d. Scholarship-20 percent- Scholastic attainment; grades of senior year and rating in class; evidence of industry and application in studies. e. Basis of Need-30 percent- Actual need of financial assistance in order to continue higher education. (Financial status of family or resources available to applicant should be stated.) If the entrant application does not win the national scholarship award she has the chance of winning either a first place award from the Depart­ ment of Illinois of "$1,000, or a second place award of $600. Friendship Club Takes Part In Guest's Survey - Dick Ortman was guest speaker at the February meeting of the Freindship club of the First United Methodist church. He explained the survey he is making on the, elderly, and asked the. cooperation of the club. members in supplying in-, formation. He is preparing a questionnaire, which the secretary will distribute to the members, and when they have filled it out they are asked to promptly return it to the secretary. Mr. Ortman feels that the Friendship club can supply much needed in­ formation and facts that will help him in the survey. Mrs. Esther Sims chose as her Meditations a story from Guidepost magazine entitled "The Arrest of Jesse Watson", which was most interesting. The program for the evening was an act that had won two first place trophies in National Shrine competition, and was also seen on the Johnny Carson show, featuring "The Guy with the Biggest Feet,, Shortest Body, Longest Arms, Biggest Mouth, Namely "Shorty". The program was presented by a local celebrity. Ken Schopp, who has presented many clown acts in the area over the years. Everyone seemed to enjoy the program very much. The Friendship club invited all members of the church 50 years old or older to attend the pot-luck dinner meetings and become a member of the club and enjoy the wonderful fellowship. Eligibility for membership is 50 years old or older (if one of the couple is 50 years old - the mate is eligible) and a member of the First United Methodist church of McHenry, single or married, male or female. The next meeting will be held Saturday, March 8, at 6 p.m. Hosts and hostesses for the evening will be Mr. and Mrs. Donald Corby, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Bailey, and Mrs. Mary Butler and Mrs. Mabel Thomas. Mr. and Mrs. Reno Eckardt will have the program for the evening. At the Feb. 8 meeting, new members Mary and Herbert Rose were welcomed into the group. Plan Spring Luncheon, Party At Club Meeting Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Fischer of 1912 Sheila street, Wood­ stock, invite their friends and relatives to .an open house Sunday, Feb.C3, at the home of a son, 2505 (Eipep Cut road, Woodstock. The occasion is the observance of the Fischers' golden wedding anniversary, MR. AND MRS. EDWIN FISCHER which will be celebrated from 2 to 5 o'clock. The couple formerly made their home in the McHenry community. Edwin Fischer and Mary Hunter were married Feb. 24, 1925, at the Crystal Lake Methodist church. They are the parents of four children, Mrs. Earl (Maxine) Kratochvil of Woodstock, Norman of Crystal Lake, Edwin R. and Mrs. James (Lorraine) Knutsen, both of Woodstock. They have fifteen grandchildren. The next meeting of the Lakeland Park Women's club will be held Thursday, March 6, at 12:30 p.m., at the Lakeland Park Community house, 1717 North Sunset drive. Hostesses will be Mary Dobbins and Lyda Radisch. The annual Spring luncheon and card party to be given Wednesday, April 16, at St. Patrick's church hall is well organized, and tickets are available from all club members, or ticket chairlady, Mrs. Wm J. (Lyda) Radisch, 1712 North Knoll avenue. The nominating committee anxiously awaiting calls with nominees' names. Chairlady of the nominating committee is Edna Domrese, assisted by Mary Dobbins and Adele Arndt. Eligibility for membership in the club is membership in good standing in the Lakeland Park Property Owners association. A most cordial invitation is extended to all ladies in Lakeland Park and Lakeland Shores who qualify for mem­ bership to enjoy an afternoon of fun and good fellowship. Gloria Carr Plays Lead In "Glass Menagerie" Gloria Carr will play the impoverished mother living on the memories of a flower- scented southern past in the Townsquare Players, Inc., presentation of "The Glass Menagerie" which will open a four performance engagement at the Woodstock Opera House starting Feb. 28 and continuing March 1, 7 and 8. Cathy O'Laughlin will be seen as Amanda's daughter, Laura, the lame and retiring girl who cannot bear to mix with people, but whose heart cries out for affection and understanding, the like she lavishes on her collection of glass animals. As Tom, the restless son who Amanda fears will, like his father, throw up his bread- winning warehouse job and "fall in love with long distan­ ce", Ron Kruis will be seen.
