Wonder Lake Mary Jean Huff 728-0267 Announce Results Of Music Contest At Local School Mrs. Mona Brown, vocal director and John Stepanek, band director at Harrison school in Wonder Lake an­ nounce the results of the Harrison School on Feb. 15. The contest involved some 900 vocal and instrumental music students from schools in nor­ thern Ill inois. The instrumental music students who received a first place rating are: Eileen Ahern, Midge Cristy, Debra Maris, Mada Warren, Barry An­ derson, Brady Anderson, Bart Decker, Lori Harney, Mary Higgins, Wendy Lance, Lars Homme, John Seaver, Peter Bender, and the trumpet quartet. The instrumental music students who received a second place rating are: Julie Huff, Cheryl Kinzie, Laurita Lance, Pam Smidt, Dee Sturm and the clarinet quintet. Vocal contestants who received a first place rating are: Peter Bender, Mike Berlin, Kimber Lee Coleman, Chuck Dicker, Susan Gun- derson, Mary Higgins, Laurita Lance, Mary Lebrecht, Patty McMillan, Heather O'Donnell , Kbse Robison, Pam Smidt, David Wright, the Double Quintet and quartet number 1 and quartet number II. Only last week a certain lady drove her car through the snowy streets of Wonder Lake to the 12:00 Mass at Christ the King church and decided to stop at the grocery store on the way. She parked across the street from the store in an unplowed parking lot and soon found "herself stuck - but good. A gentleman, seeing her -predicament, went to get his 'shovel to help her dig out. Soon another man appeared with shovel in hand followed by yet "another man and his son who helped push the vehicle out onto •the street. KINDERGARTEN ACTIVITIES When mothers of the kin­ dergarten classes at Harrison School went to their mailboxes on Valentine's Day, they found a valentine hand made by their child and personally mailed by him at the Wonder Lake post office. On Thursday, Feb. 13, the kindergarten students were guided by Postmaster Lorraine Murphy on a tour of our local post office. They found out just what happens to a letter when it is mailed, saw some mail bags and even had a ride on a cart . A class project when they returned to school was making a "Thank You" poster for Mrs. Murphy. Food is something all children enjoy and the kin­ dergarten study unit on food incorporates many challenges and learning experiences. Recently the youngsters made peanut butter and jelly sand­ wiches on another day, instant pudding (which everybody liked!) Teachers, Mrs. Mavis Bagby and Miss Jean Gende, are planning to make "Stone Soup" soon and each child will bring one vegetable which he will cut up and add to the soup pot at the proper t ime. Favorite foods ot the children such as pizza and pancakes will also be made with every lit t le guy and gal taking a turn to stir , roll , add something, spread and - the best part , taste! Other ac­ tivities which add to the en­ joyment of school include making a collage of pictures of food and seeing film strips on "Good and Skimpy Break fasts", etc. In the future the •kindergarten hopes to take field trips to a bakery and to a supermarket. According to Mrs. Bagby, this unit on foods is one that all children can relate to. By being successful at these simple things, such as spreading peanut butter on bread or slicing a carrot and adding it to the soup pot, i t creates a sense of happiness, of belonging to the group and a good feeling about school, while at the same time reading readiness skills are being developed as they talk about and compare beans, beets, broccoli , etc. GET-WELL WISHES Get-well wishes to Myrtle Schwartz, who has been hospitalized in Woodstock for some time. Mrs. Schwartz is such a thoughtful lady, she even called from her hospital bed to order her Girl Scout cookies! Hope you are soon happily home in Wonder View, Mrs. Schwartz. ADMIRATION Some people you just gotta admire! For instance, Harrison School hosted the District 8 band and choral solo and en­ semble contest on Saturday, Feb. 15, and while thumbing through our daughter, Julie 's program, it really hit us that a tremendous amount of work is involved in organizing a day like this. Pianos were moved into every room possible. Food was prepared and served to the 900 participating students and also to the judges and some parents. A complete and lengthy program was printed. Endless details were taken care of. Students and parents and members of the com­ munity who were called on to help, did so in whatever way they could. So, to every person who did his "bit" and to those people who organized the whole thing and worked the hardest and came home exhausted after a successful day, thank you. It 's people like you that make us proud of our com­ munity. TENTH BIRTHDAY There's another birthday in the Don Huff household this week. Dan Huff, a fourth grader at Harrison, will be ten years old on March 2. Happy birthday, Dan! FUN FAIR DAY Well, this Saturday, March 1, is the day many kids in Wonder Lake and the whole area have been looking forward to all year. It 's Fun Fair Day at Harrison School. It is a Christian community in which the handicapped can develop a personal relationship with God, according to His special abili t ies and can grow in faith. Currently there are two groups in SPRED for the mentally handicapped. The sessions for 11-16-year-olds meet on Sunday morning at St. Thomas school in Crvstal Lake. Older mentally handicapped sutdents, 17-2.1, meet Wed­ nesday evenings. In September there will also be classes for 6- 10-year-olds as well as for mentally handicapped adults: ' A program for deaf and hearing impaired children is also being planned. The sessions for the han­ dicapped are held once every two weeks. During the alter­ nate weeks the adults working in the program meet for prayer, discussion and plan ning. The adult community is made up of a leader catechist. an activity catechist and helper cateehist.
