With him, from left, are two of the soloists, Yvonne Matt and Christine Marulewski. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Choirs Present Feb. 27 Concert The choirs of St. John the Baptist church, Johnsburg, together with the instrumental ensemble and organ, under the direction of John R. Heidinger, will present the second program in their 1974-75 con cert series Thursday evening, Feb. 27 at 8 p.m. in the church. The featured work on the program will be Ralph Vaughan Williams' setting of five poems by the 17th century poet George Herbert, "Five Mystical Songs." Originally scored for baritone solo, mixed choir and orchestra, the "Five Mystical Songs" has been arranged for the women's choir of Saint John's and organ by its director. Contralto Yvonne Matt will sing the solo portions of the work. Set to .music that is at once majestic and beautiful, the poems depict the personal joy of Easter from the exalted cry of the opening poem "Rise heart, thy Lord is Risen", continuing with the experience of bringing flowers to celebrate the resurrection only to find that their beauty, the glory of the sun and the wonder of time itself fades when compared to the resurrection. The third poem in the set is a dialogue between the penitent sinner and Christ inviting him to the festive banquet of Holy Communion while the fourth work is a personal welcome to the Risen Lord who is "the way, the truth, the life." The final movement of the work, "An- tiphone," is set for choir alone and calls on heaven and earth to sing in celebration of Him who is "my God and King." Written in 1911 while the composer was at work on his "Sea Svmphony", the "Five Mystical Songs; contains some of R. Vaughan Williams' most effective use of choral writing and is a classic example of the composer's elusive harmonies' which had a great influence on the style of twentieth century music. Though it has been sung con tinuously since its premier performance, the Five Mystical Songs is seldom heard in this area. The concert will open with selections from two of J.S. Bach's cantatas, the extended chorale, "Now Thank We All Our God", for choir, two trumpets and organ from Cantata 79, and the aria and chorale from Cantata 147, "My Heart O Lord Jesus" sung by soprano Christine Marulewski, and the choral, "Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring," one of Bach's most famous and beloved works. The three movement work opens with a joyful and spirited Allegro followed by a quietly reflective second movement and closes with a fugue. Hin- demith wrote three sonatas for organ which rank among the finest organ literature of the twentieth century. The com poser combines with grand effect modern harmonies, classical form and a Baroque treatment of the organ which cause his Sonatas to span the centuries of the finest works for organ. Sonata II, like the six organ sonatas of Bach, is based on original themes. The choristers will open the children's choirs portion of the program with Gastoldi's "In Thee Is Gladness" which became famous as one of Bach's organ chorales, 'though it is in reality a choral gavotte. It will be followed by Luther's setting of Isaiah's vision of God, "Isaiah Mighty Seer In Days Of Old", sung by the Choirboys. The Choristers and Choirboys will combine to close their portion of the program with the popular, "Let There Be Peace On Earth" by Miller. The concert will close with the choir singing John Heidinger's arrangements of three religious folk songs from Scandanavia including "In Heaven Above," "Children Of The Heavenly Father" and "Behold A Host Arrayed In White." Mr. Heidinger's "A Hymn For The Holy Year 1975" sung by the combined choirs with the instrumental ensemble will be the final number in this concert. Based on the dual Holy Year theme of Renewal and Reconciliation, the two-versed hymn will be sung by the choral forces in unison with in struments as well as by the
