The pressure paid off as Beth was held to a singel F.G. while Zeller and Ludwig teamed up for 12 field goals. The McHenry 79-61 win over Crown leaves them one game off the pace of the conference leading Zee-Bees. B (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) EARL Stopped in for a snack Sun day night at the buzzing Fox Hole -- peaceful as could be. Who should we run into but Bill (Beautiful Wrigley Field) DeVries! Of course, he told us how great the geritol Cubs will be this year. (They can't lose). Trouble is Bill doesn't believe us and that grieves us no end. Would you believe? He wouldn't when we told him that Ron Santo is going back to his first love, the Cubs, this year. With Winkel's help, we'll load Bill into the car next summer and take him down to see the White Sox play ball. They came here Saturday night to play the powerful Warriors and gave us fits as the first half ended 40-all. Cs; They made free throws (Rabbitt says 20 out of 22 at tempts) in the first half. Those whistle tootin' officials had the Warriors baffled in the first half as they tried to play their usual rugged defensive game. We seldom criticize the officials, but must admit it looked like the Warriors Vs. the Refs. Apparently Coaches Ludwig and Partenheimer had words o{ wisdom for the home team between halves. The boys played 'em looser and didn't have a foul called on them in the third quarter. There was never a doubt after the Warriors got things turned around in the last half. Saw Mr and Mrs. Frank Meyer at the game. Looked like old times. "ANNUAL FUN NITf I MARCH 1st at the VFW HALL 3002 W. RTE. 120 McHENRY ILL. STARTS 7:00 pm Til ? Warriors Win 20th Over Crown 79 to 61 Collins Relaxes As Sophs Win 59 to 36 Mrs. Ludwig's mother was another whom we were glad to see enjoying the game. She was in a wheel chair. That's the old spirit. We have signed up with Larry Lund to take the bus trip March 4., to see the Warriors in the regional tournament at Belvidere. In case you can't attend the tournament, you can tune in station WXRD < FM 105 on your dial) and listen to the Warrior games. Sounds good. More to say "it can be done," fewer to explain why "it can't be done." More to inspire others with confidence, fewer to throw cold water on anyone taking even one step in the right direction. More to get into the thick of things and do something, fewer to sit on the sidelines merely finding fault. More to point out what s right with the world, fewer to keep harping on what's wrong with the world. More to be interested in "lighting candles." fewer in blowing them out. Anonvmous By Dick Rabbitt The "Cardiac Kids' ' didn't quite live up to their name last Saturday night. Vowing the give Coach Collins an easy time of it , the young sophomores blasted Crown 59 to 36. Leading only 11 to 9 at the end of the first period, the young Warriors really putfHje game away in the second^ period. With Miller, Klap- perich, and Reinboldt leading the attack in this period the sophs went into the dressing room with a 10 pt margin 27 to 17. Continuing the assault in the third period with Miller, Hurckes. and Reinboldt all scoring the sophs led at the end of three periods 44 to 29. In the final stanza the sophs out scored the Vikes 15 to 7 to win easily. 59 to 36. It was o far cry from last weekend when the young Warriors won on Billy Hurckes bucket at the buzzer It was a smiling and relaxed Coach who walked to the dressing room after the game. One of the few times it has happened this season. Ken fought his way to the finals before bowing to Steve Jones from Rockford East in a hard fought match 5 to 1. Ken will take his 25 wins 5 losses and 2 ties to Champaign where he will meet the winner of the Normal Sectional tournament. It is the first time sirfee Jim Laursen and Tom Dougherty back in the 1966-67 season qualified for the state finals that the Warriors have sent a boy to state. Steve Lane and Bob Eppel didn't fare too well at Rockford"5 Steve was defeated by Ted Smith of Barrington, and Eppel lost twice to Randy Speiss from Belvidere, and Ed Wargo of Wheeling. Congratulations are in order for Ken. and on behalf of all Warrior fans we wish him the best of luck in the State Finals. By Dick Rabbitt The McHenry High Warriors hit another milestone here last Saturday night when they won their 20th game of the season by defeating Crown 79 to 61. It was the first 20 game season for Coach Ken Ludwig as Warrior coach, and only the second time in history of the school that a McHenry team has won 20 games in a season. The other was in 1958-59 when Cliff Fulton's five won the North Suburban Conference. It was also the Warriors 12th win in a row, their last defeat coming at the hands of Peoria Central in the finals of the Kankakee Holiday Tourney 54 to 49. It leaves the Warriors with an 11 and 1 conference record, still trailing the ZeeBees who defeated Mun- delein 112 to 72. The Vikes took an early 2 to 0 lead before Koerber and Stark got the Warriors on the right track. Along with Kasprzyk, Reilly and Zeller the Warriors managed to continue putting the ball in the hoop and led at the quarter 19 to 15. 40-ALL AT HALF With the Warriors gradually getting into foul trouble, and the Vikings making their free throws, the game became a seesaw battle, and the teams went off the court at the in termission tied at 40 all. With the officials calling the game as close' as possible, it looked as if it would be a matter of which team had the stronger bench in the final period. It was a free throwing contest during the opening half, and the Vikes came out on the better end of it as they made 20 out of 22 from the charity line. Swimmers 7th In Meet By Dick Rabbitt Coach Mike Shanahan's McHenry high swimming team finished 7th in the Arlington District Meet held Saturday. St. Viators won the meet with 212 pts. Vance Roth just missed by three-tenths of a second to qualify in the 200 yd freestyle. Although Vance finished second in the race his time was not quite good enough to qualify for the state finals. Soph "B's" Lose To Dundee Five 51 -44 SCORES Spotting Dundee a 22 to 6 lead was too much to overcome and the McHenry Freshmen B squad lost 51 to 44. With three minutes left in the game the local frosh crept to within three points, but missed free throws decided the contest in favor of Dundee. Dan Lindahl led all scorers with 13 points. Monday through Friday. All tickets must be purchased by 2 p.m. Tuesdav, March 4. During the intermission it was again the words of wisdom spoken by Coach Ludwig that got the Warriors back on the beam. Whatever was said during the halftime break must have done some good as the Warriors looked like the team of old in the third period. Koerber opened the scoring with a 3 pt play. With Kasprzyk and Koerber mixed in with a bucket by Reilly the Warriors ran and shot their way to a 61 to 50 lead going into the final stanza. In the final period the Warriors continued on where they left off, and with all five starters getting into the scoring column during the period the Warriors walked off with win number 20 of the season 79 to 61. LARGEST CROWD Along with "Parent Night", the largest crowd of the season was in attendance to pay tribute to Coach Ludwig and this fine Warrior team. In the closing moments of the game when Coach Ludwig took out his starting five one by one, the student cheering section gave each of the boys a standing ovation, and for Marty Zeller, Tom Stark, Kenne Ludwig and Steve Kasprzyk it will be long remembered. These four seniors have played their last game at Buckner Gym, and what memories these lads will have.
