PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5, 1975 BUT THE REF called the foul on Kenne. Warrior Kenne Ludwig usually plays his opponent very close and on numerous occasions, has drawn him into a charging foul. Tiger Steve Zoellick, pressured by both Kasprzyk and Ludwig, lucks out as Kenne was called for the contact foul. The Warriors captured their twenty-first win as they ended their regular season play with a 63- 52 win over the Crystal Lake Tigers. (STAFF PHOTO- WAYNE GAYLORD) EARL WALSH So I Hear One of the best sports visits we have had in some time was with Gar Roche of Whispering Hills. Think he said the name of the Chicago team he played with in a visit to the McHenry diamond was "GAR". That was 45 years ago. Gar has quite a background in sports, working with youths in the years when he no longer participated in various sports. He still helps the kids and may be real active this coming summer in the Johnsburg area. Left our car parked on Green St., the other day and started a long half block walk to the Post Office. As we reached the corner of Green and Elm, the lights both ways read "DON'T WALK". Wonder if it was a message. SPORTS EDITOR. mess, but never for that his smile won't get him out of it. He's a prize! Reports from spring training camps would lead us to believe that neither the Cubs nor Sox will be in the World Series next fall. We don't care what they say. Our Sox are going to be win ners. It's a whole new ball game this year. Remember when March 1st was called moving day? That was when farmers moved to different farms for one reason or another. Now they hold a sale and move to town as subdividers take over. We have an idea. You readers can send in poems, verses or stories for a St. Patrick's Day column. Do it now. "Yes", said the personnel manager to the job applicant, "what we're after is a man of visior* a man with drive, determination, fire; a man who can inspire others; a man who can pull our bowling team out of last place!" By the time a man gets to greener pastures, he can't climb the fence. February 27th,1975 Pat Cairns, whose birthday is today, says he does not mind being 80 years old, but he hates being an octogenarian. Pat Owen That we can understand, Pat. After all, we all know Cairns is 80 years young. The Warrior varsity basketball team beat the Tigers at Crystal Lake Friday night to wind up a great season. Steve Koerber and Marty Zeller were honored by being named to the "ALL" team in the North Suburban. Dick Rabbitt's reports will be spread over this page. Such reports make good reading. Now for the regional tour nament at Belvidere Tuesday night. We'll be on one of the Larry Lund Specials (buses) before this hits the newsstands. Geese came north, got a whiff of the air up here and turned tail to go back south. That's more than Joe Etten did. Joe spent three weeks in Florida, played golf with Bill Tonyan, Schmaltz Miller, Chuck Hiller, and called on Oscar Dahl. Of course, Joe had bowling tournaments awaiting him. We don't know what the geese had in mind. ^ Meet Your Coaches GARY GRAY Gary Gray is head teiyiis coach and freshman basketball coach at McHenry high school. Sophs End 15-8 Season With 55-48 Win At Crystal Lake By Dick Rabbitt Coach Gary Collins sophomore cagers closed out their season Friday night on a winning note by defeating Crystal Lake 55 to 48. Freshman A1 Reinboldt put on a brilliant offensive display as the young man hit 11 out of 11 from the field and pulled down 11 rebounds, in which Coach Collins described as just a "super game". The win left the young Warriors with a season record of 15 wins and 8 defeats. It marked the 21st win of the year for the Warriors, left them in second place in the North Suburban with a 11 and 1 record one game behind champion Zion Benton. The game started out slowly with both teams missing easy shots and committing numerous turnovers. With 2:45 remaining in the period Joe Meyers' two free throws put the Warriors ahead 9 to 6, and the tempo of the game began to pick up. With Zeller and Koerber each getting 4 pts. the Warriors pulled away to a 17 to 12 lead at the end of the period. With Koerber hitting six freethrows and baskets by Stine, Zeller and Kenne Ludwig the Warriors added their one point lead to a 33 to 27 halftime edge. CONTROL BOARDS Controlling the boards was the main factor in the first half, as the Warriors outrebounded the Tiger five. This doesn't happen too often, as Crystal Lake is one of the top rebounding teams in the con ference. In the third stanza the Tigers made their move. Froehlick hit three from the outside, and Bennett was popping them in from the baseline, the Tigers took the lead 41 to 39 with 3:50 remaining. The Warriors called a timeout, and again some words of wisdom were spoken by Coach Ludwig and Par- tenheimer. During the next six minutes the Warriors completely out played the Tigers, putting on another great third quarter performance, and carrying it into the final period. Koerber, Kasprzyk, Lund, Zeller, and Stark all scoring important baskets, plus the rebounding of Ron Stine. The big fellow gathered in 4 important rebounds during this stretch of time. Going into the final frame leading 47 to 43 the Warriors continued their assault on the Tigers, and the Warriors slowed the game down to get better position in the final minutes, they were fouled repeately by the Tigers, and made the free throws when they counted to hang on f6r the win. THAT IMPORTANT BENCH It wasn't the best effort by the Warriors this season, but during that six minute stretch in the third and fourth periods t must say they did play super ball. Again Coach Ludwig used his bench, Meyer, Lund, and Stine all came in and did the job expected of them. The five regulars playing their last regular season game kept their poise, even when the Tigers forged ahead midway in the third period. The officiating as expected was tight. It's getting near tournament time, and I think the Warriors will benefit by it in the regional tournament. The Warriors had a large delegation of fans at the Fieldhouse and they didn't come away disappointed. I hope by the time you read this the Warriors are in the finals at Belvidere on Friday. If so, let's all get out and root them on to another big win. McHenry fg ft Pf tP Zeller 4 0 5 8 Stark 3 0 4 6 Koerber 5 7 4 17c K.
