'Food Fads Fool" National Nutrition Week Observed Locally "Food Fads Fool," the theme of National Nutrition week, March 2-8, is particularly meaningful this year, ac cording to June Madden, R.D., administrative dietitian, and Isabel Brody, R.D., therapeutic dietitian, at McHenry hospital. "In counseling patients about their diets, I find that many people have picked up much misinformation about nutrition from popular magazines and television programs," Mrs. Brody said. "Food fads and fad diets can be more than a waste of money - they can actually endanger one's nutrition. "Unusual food practices are not necessarily bad. but some fads lack the necessary nutrients or focus on extremes. Consider low-carbohydrate diets, the zen macrobiotic diet, and such. They actually have the potential to cause health problems." Among the nutrients often missing from fad diets, in addition to carbohydrates, are calcium, iron, trace minerals and Vitamin A. Some fad diets are also lacking in"protein, Mrs. Madden stated. The zen macrobiotic diet is not to be confused with vegetarian diets which can be nutritionally adequate, both dietitians pointed out. A booklet by the American Dietetic association, which represents 26,000 registered dietitians, has been written for the general public to refute current fallacies and present a guide for nutritious meal patterns.
