On The Sidelines With Die' ' babbitt Now that the shock of the Warrior defeat in the sectional tourney at Rockford has left us, we can only sit back and think what could have happened. Rockford Auburn defeating Harlem in the finals rather easily, and then winning the Supersectional game this afternoon against West Aurora. I'm sure that Coach Ludwig and the boys who attended the game at DeKalb, had some sober thoughts. Their hearts were not really in the game. Knowing for just a bit of luck, it could have been the Warriors at DeKalb this afternoon, must have brought back some thoughts about the Harlem game at Rockford. The Warriors sure had some impressive statistics the past season. As a team they shot 47 percent from the field. When an entire squad shoots that high, one can see the reason for their success. They also only averaged 14 turnovers a game, and that's not bad for a run and shoot . team. As expected Koerber, Zetler and Stark were the big rebounders. -- Steve hauled down 260, Marty 192 and Tom picked off 172. As a team they gathered in a total of 579 for the season. All in all it was a great season, and one we can remember for a long time. Congratulation^ are in order to Tommy Hutchinson and Brian Fetzer, two McHenry High athletes. These boys attained the rank of Eagle Scout recently , Much time and effort was spent by these two boys to attain such an award. Tom played football and was on the wrestling squad. Brian is one of Coach Shanahan's swimmers. Can't forget to mention the play by play team of Hans Rokus, Vern Peterson, and Tommy Blenner who did an excellent job at the mike during the regional and sectional games. From all reports the above three should take a few bows for their coverage of the games. In closing out the basketball report I would like to take you back to the night of March 4th, 1959 in the Crystal Lake Fieldhouse where another great McHenry team took it on the chin. I am referring to that great shoot out between Cliff Fulton's Warriors, and the Green Wave of Coach Greg True. McHenry was a slight favorite that night coming into the game with a record of 22 and 2. As many of you recall the fieldhouse was packed with Warrior and Green Wave fans that night. It was a ball game like many others that was and is played over and over again. It was a nip and tuck game right down to the final gun, but when the dust settled the Wave had won 78 to 73. Here is the box score of that game of so long ago. Only in the free throw department were the Warriors outgained by the opposition. The Warriors shot free throws at a 64 percent clip, while the opposition managed to mark up a 65 percent average in the same category. Big Steve Koerber threaded the nets for 529 points and a 19.6 percent average to top the team. Kenne Ludwig shot 767 from the free throw line to top the Warriors in that department.
