PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, APRIL 4, 1975 Advice from an old car penter: measure twice and saw once. •A TV report tells us the White Sdx finally traded Ed Herr- rrfann to the New York Yankees for four minor league players. Mot much of a report. Guess we wjll have to wait for the mor ning paper to get the full story. ^Herrmann is the old style ball player if not a great one. He Mocks home plate like nobody can. He can catch the knuckle h£ll. He can't hit too good. He runs hard, but takes a long time to get there. EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITORJ Herrmann wanted a raise in pay and the Sox management said no soap. With the Yankee catcher, Munson, on the injured list, they need an experienced catcher. The Sox have Brian Downing, an aggressive ball player, to do their backstop- ping, a big fellow named Varney will be around to help with the chores in back of the batter. We saw him in training last year when he looked like two-ton Tony. Reports have it that he has cut down to a respectable weight this year. He swings a wicked bat. Hits line drives (Not too often, but he hits 'em). If the Sox want to win the pennant this year, they didn't make a good trade. Those four players in the minors may help them some day. Maybe. As if the Cubs didn't have enough worries, now they have to put their strong man, first baseman Andy Thornton, on the disabled list. Maybe we shouid'dig out our first baseman's mitt and offer our services. At least they won't have to go through a recount to see who is going to be Mayor of Chicago the next four years. A good friend of ours reported to the McHenry City Hall Tuesday wanting to vote. Since there wasn't any local election that day, we can only assume he wanted to cast his vote for Richard J.,Daley. Daley covers Chicago like a blanket, but doesn't have a branch out in these parts. Not vet.
