It will be held again this year at the Lake County Fairgrounds near the intersection of Il l inois Rte. 120 and U.S. Rte. 45, Grayslake, 111. Over the years as America has taken to wheels, rockhounding has steadily grown in popularity until today it has arrived at the pinnacle, having nudged stamp collec ting from first place among hobbies. Truly, rockhounding is a "family hobby". Folks of all ages, from three to one- hundred and three, succumb to its lure. Roaming the hillsides, creekbeds, seashores, mine dumps, and gravel pits whole families go out into God's great out-of-doors searching for semi-precious stones, unusual mineral specimens, and rare fossils. Their finds are often breathtakingly beautiful. Since many have turned to processing these stones, we have become a nation of lapidary craftsmen cutting, carving, and polishing nature's lovely mineral specimens into glit tering jewelry and beautiful art objects. The cultural value of Rockhounding is great for it arouses interest in and adds to one's knowledge of the Earth Sciences and appreciation of the superbly beautiful and miraculous creations of nature. In addition, it brings out the artist in an individual and stimulates creative endeavor In 1963, James Zradicka and Douglas Clarke gathered together fifteen eager rock enthusiasts thus bringing into being the Lake County Gem and Mineral Society. Today, it is a thriving, educational o r i e n t e d , n o n - p r o f i t organization, fostering interest in the Earth Sciences and the IAD BAR NOW AT PORKIES Included Everyday With Luncheon Specials & Dinners! Its members have found boundless pleasure in sharing with each other, the people of Northeastern Ill inois, and Southeastern Wisconsin, the delightful rewards of their efforts. Our society is affil iated with the Midwest Federation of Mineralogical and Geological Societies and the American Federation of Mineralological Societies. The public is urged to attend our regular monthly meeting where, in addition to the business proceeding, programs which are both educational and entertaining are offered. Our annual exhibitions present the public with a splendid opportunity to view collective displays of superb mineral specimens and to learn much of the mysteries of the earth's crust. The Tenth Annual Won derland of Gems and Minerals Exhibition promises to be the best ever. No effort has been spared to provide a wide array of the finest exhibits prepared by members. Everyone will be delighted with the beauty and quality of the materials displayed and the ingenuity used in showing them. The almost endless variety of natures mineral creations astonish many viewers. Since the Society has always placed great emphasis on education, the;nember exhibits reflect this atti tude. Throughout the show the guests will be shown the tools, the methods, the published data, and general information relevant to rockhounding. The working displays always attract crowds who see skilled members demonstrate with actual equipment the simple processes of making jewelry. Each step of the operation is shown: cutting, shaping on the grinding wheel, sanding, and polishing until a rough stone emerges as a lovely jewel. Too, the pouring and molding of precious metals into exquisite settings for these gems will be demonstrated The guests will be intrigued and fascinated by the fluorescent display. Under this mysterious black light, stones which seem drab and dull under ordinary conditions, glow with startl ing beauty. This must be seen to be believed! Another fine feature offered again this year is a touch-table for the blind with descriptions of the minerals in braille. There will be an attendant at the table to answer questions and to assist the guests. Many rockhounds engage in the searching for, and the collecting of fossil specimens in their myriad forms. ELM McHENRY 385-7500 TOURS OPERATED AND ARRANGED BY TRAVEL & TOUR SERVICE, INC. MILWAUKEE, Wl AND CHICAGO, IL MC12720 Many Byways Of Florida Attract Returning Tourists [ By Father William O. Manner, rector emeritus of Holy Comforter, Episcopal, Kenilworth) After our visit with the Atkinsons and the luxury of their nice new guest beds we headed for the home and parish of the Rev. and Mrs. Norman B. Feaster. I had presented both these good souls for con firmation back in the early '50s in Miami. Later I presen ted him for < ordination to the/Sacred Priesthood and now rejoice in the quality of work he is doing in St. James parish, Hollywood, Fla. He has built buildings, he has gathered people, he instructs them, the parish is clean, efficient and holy. Pretty good combination. I celebrated the early Eucharist and preached at the Family Eucharist . Most satisfactory and satisfying. From there we ran up to Winter Park in the center of the state. Winter Park is a com munity like Winnetka of fine homes and shops and pleasant people and well run clubs, churches, stores and schools. It is one of the gracious areas of Florida-of which there are a number more. Here lived the parents of one of my families in Kenilworth. I had presented five members of their daughter 's family for confirmation. We were to be their guests ior several days. Central Florida is not as flat as some parts of the state. There are many fine orange groves and beautiful lakes. Our hosts gracious home was on one of the thirty odd lakes within the city limits of Winter Park. This was a very happy visit , for my hosts ' pastor, when they were young, was the man who later, as Bishop of Chicago, ordained me. The first night we had an ecclesiastical gab fest, regaling each other with tales of the days of Bishop Stewart. The second evening there was a dinner after the dining of the Old School. Ten of us sat down to feast. There was the rector and his wife, the senior warden and his lady, a past senior warden and Mrs. Past Senior Warden, he the son of goodly couple whose hoiise guests we "were, the hosts and the Hanners. The dinner was one of the kind you don't forget. Elegant food, flowers fresh from the garden, the food prepared by a gifted black lady whose daughter, a very young grandmother, served the meal. In days of yore there were not a few homes where the meals were served by passing the dishes prepared to each guest presented by the server. This capable woman served as a great painter paints. She knew her profession and she was accomplished in i t . I wished that after that dinner we could have had cook and server in for a round of applause. You recall how much trouble we have had with elms in Ill inois and how great a number we have lost. The same is true of our Oaks in McHenry. I have sometimes felt that our li t t le community here might be called Dying Oaks instead of Whispering Oaks. In Miami the coconut palms are dying by the score. The top center fronds take a yellow color on and unless QUICK treatment is applied by a skilled tree man your palm tree (expensive too) will soon go the way of sick trees. Also around F lo rid agreat-ckunps of^ bamboo were dead. The Live oaks in Ocean Springs, Miss. , had been sickly looking. Now as we sped north the red bud and dogwood showed ill health. The natives in Georgia call i t "dawgwood" stringing the first syllable out unduly. I have named seven of our most beautiful trees that are in trouble. Seems like our forestry is on a par with our foreign policy. Trees are a national wealth. Something about our general way of l iving kills off our good land, our wildlife, now our valuable trees and pretty soon ourselves, I suppose. Leaving Winter Park, we headed north to Georgia. It would be easy to get to our destination in a few hours if we stuck to the great super high ways 1 or 95. We, however, took Florida 17 - recalling our travel on it two years ago. It wanders north from Deland about twenty miles west of the Atlantic coast. It is only two lanes but is marked with a dotted green line along its length showing that it is con sidered a scenic route. We like it . There are many orange groves and small towns. No one tears past you -- you can take your t ime and enjoy the lakes and rolling country. Everyone tries to sell citric fruit along the roadside. I bought about fifty tangerines for 50 cents and ate four and five at a time. Ex pense was no item and they certainly are not fattening. We passed many a small lake and after Palatka (isn't that a nice name for a "home town")? the St. John's river ran along our right sparkling and bright. Near Jacksonville it widened out to care for ocean dockage and became, not beautiful but a busy commercial stream. There are plenty of byways in Florida if you know where to find them. But don't do as I am doing and give away your secrets.
