PAGE 13 - PLAINDEALER-WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16, 1975 Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 17, 1925) As the result of the election this spring Dr. D.G. Wells was reelected as mayor over Dr. R.G. Chamberlin by sixty-one votes. Work at the McHenry Community high school building has been moving along rapidly and looks as if the structure would be ready for occupancy at the beginning of next fall's term. Carl, Jr., the five year old son of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Stenger of- this, city, narrowly escaped very serious injuries when he was knocked down by one of the McHenry Lumber trucks. The wheels did not pass over the victim tho' the child was considerably bruised about the face, head, shoulders, arms and hands as the result of being dragged a short distance. Starting with the opening of the summer season, the Or chard Beach hotel, located on the west bank of Fox River, will inaugurate its own bus line between the Northwestern station in this city and the Orchard Beach subdivision. The first stopping place will be the Lasch cottages and will give service as far north as Dr. Carl Strueh's health resort. Mrs. Herman Kamholz, a long time resident of this city, passed away at her home west of the railroad tracks Wed nesday morning of this week. The old ice house on the property more commonly referred to as the old "Tip" Smith holdings on Waukegan road has been raised. A very noticeable improvement to that end of the street. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 18, 1935) Harry E. Gobel, about 61 years old of Chicago, a summer resident at Pistakee Bay for nearly a quarter of a century, died at his home in Chicago April 3. His home at the Bay was on Cedar Island, his being the second cottage to be built on the island. His wife's father, John McGrath, owned Cedar Island as much as forty years ago and a relative of his built the lighthouse on the island. A transaction was completed Tuesday in which Mr. and Mrs. John Fisher sold out their Royal Blue Store on Riverside drive to Ralph Julian of Win- throp Harbor. Mrs. N.E. Taylor opened the Bide-A-WeeshoponU.S. 12, last week and is now ready for another busy season. Ray McGee, Green street business man, received his appointment Saturday as postmaster at McHenry to succeed Albert Krause and commenced his duties this week. Mr. McGee has been in McHenry for the past sixteen years, coming here at the close of the war, where he has con ducted a men's clothing store on Green street. A.J. Wirtz, who has been with Mr. McGee in the store for the past seven years will now manage the store for him. Albert Krause whose term expired in February has been an efficient postmaster during the past four years. Rolland McCannon, principal of the two room Ringwood school, is becoming known in educational circles thru his interest in the reorganization of the rural school unit. Mr. McCannon has written various magazine articles pertaining to rural schools. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 27, 1950) Mrs. Augusta Patzke, 79 years old, a lifelong resident of McHenry, died unexpectedly at her home on Main street, Friday morning, just four weeks after the death of her son, Robert. The McHenry post office is this week rearranging routes, incident to one trip delivery service.' The office is among those throughout the country asked by the federal depart ment to comply with a request for reduced service. The local office has been asked to schedule only one mail delivery in residential sections Monday through Saturday. MODEL SK27AV MOTHER'S DAY SPECIAL! GREEN ST. McHENRY 385-5500 amisiisiMAii Roger Milbrandt of Riverside Drive was initiated into the Alpha Gamma chapter of the Kappa Sigma fraternity at the University of Illinois recently. The chapter was founded at the University of Illinois in 1891. Many items of interest oc cupied the attention of the Business Men's association at their meeting Monday evening but probably chief among them was the discussion of next summer's Marine Day program on July 30. Two special features were men tioned, the queen contest and the changes in the manner in which it will be conducted, and the utility and professional boat races which will be held. Miss Dolores Feltes, daughter of the John Skidmores of Ringwood became the bride of Mr. Robert Malsch of McHenry on April 22 at McHenry's Zion Evangelical Lutheran church. Beginning next month, local residents]will receive their gas and eleetric bill be postal card in plade of the present envelope enclosed form. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 22, 1965) The Bernhard Schwanke home in Holiday Hills was damaged to the extent of between $8,000 and $10,000 because of fire on Easter Sunday morning. In a political race at the nearby village of McCullom Lake, Arthur J. Stuhlfeier, who headed the Progressive party, was voted into office. Elected with Mr. Stuhlfeier were Carol Bateman for clerk, John Boyle, Richard Johnson, Harry Lock and Donald Parenti for trustees. The new high school is planned to include sufficient classrooms for 1,000 students, a library, gymnasium, swim ming pool, cafeteria and an auditorium to seat 700. John Unti, 77, of Green street, died April 15, in the Nursing Home, Genoa City, where he has been confined for three weeks. A car belonging to Mayor Donald P. Doherty was stolen from a parking place on Elm street, later found parked at McCullom Lake. St. Mary's Catholic church was the scene of a beautiful POLICE TICKETS Richard E. Bruce Waddell (R-Dundee) has announced that he will work for the passage of a phm to drop the 5 per cent sales tax on purchases of food and medicine unveiled by Republican legislators this week "The people of Illinois need some type of immediate and direct tax relief," Represen tative Waddell said, "and I believe this plan is fair to all and responsible in terms of state and local government revenue requirements." Under the provisions of the legislation, the sales tax on other retail items would be increased by one per cent to make up for state and local government revenues lost on the sale of food and medicine. The plan was designed by Republican legislators in cooperation with State Comp troller George Lindberg 25% OFF READY-MADE DRAPERIES LINED WITH ROC-LON 5,M.SATUM>AY.
