ON TARGET for a strike. Warrior pitcher Terry Gough hurled for 4 innings against the Crystal Lake Tigers, Tuesday, giving up 2 runs. Darkness ended the game after 7 innings with the score tied at 6 all. The game will be continued at Crystal Lake when the Warriors travel there for a regular season game. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) EARL WALSH So I Hear Bill DeVries came back from Las Vegas with some choice cigars for us. He's trying to make a Republican and a Cub fan out of us. Called on Barb Gerasch the other day and found out how busy Pearl Street is these days. There was a time when you could cross that street any old time without taking your life in your hands. The Harry Ecklunds spent the winter in Florida, then came back with the robins to run into our big snow storm. Wonder if Eddie Bimbo has gone back to the Cubs. He made a sly little remark about how well they are doing compared to the Sox. If he's on that side of the fence again, he can stay there. No way will we take him back when the Sox start a big win ning streak. SPORTS EDITOR. Let's hope the baseball teams like the Shamrocks and Tigers will turn in box scores and reports on their games next summer. A little publicity won't hurt in building up in terest. Bill Molnaire says he will be on hand again with his fine voice for the Memorial Day services. Age isn't going to stop him. The Cubs won a couple of ball games and local fans pour it on us. Thought Dan Justen had something important to see us about when he came dashing towards our car. Just wanted to ask us about the Cubs. Told him to wait until they play teams like Pittsburg a few times. That's when they separate the men from the boys. 1975. The year of the Cub CadeK 6 new models for 1975, 8 to 16 HP. Stock Car Racing "Mitch" Przetacznk phoned us (not about baseball), but there was his wife in the background -- "Ask him what he thinks of the Cubs." Told her to call us about July 15th. Now, wouldn't we be sms prised if -- "Biff" and Esther Meyer must have sat up late making up a clever sheet. Wish you could see it. They must have had a party - several messages signed by people we don't know. Oh! This was a bunch of nuts who went out to watch the Cubs in zero weather! • They invited us to cut the ribbon for the season opener. How can you cut a ribbon when you're wearing heavy mitts? We take it there were some Sox fans in the crowd. Like Mary Lou Peterson? Isabel McCauley wrote: "Maybe you should take a quick look at the Chicago Fire!" Maybe she meant the original Chicago Fire. We knew Mrs. O'Leary real well. Now comes an invitation to visit a famous resort. They tell us our biggest decision will be deciding what to do first. "Will it be a dip in the pool or a round of golf? How about tennis or horseback riding? Stock car racing fans will get the chance to meet top drivers and take a close look at super modified and sportsman race cars when the IRA (Interstate Racing Assn.) conducts its annual mall show and pre season inspection from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 20, at the McHenry Shopping Center on 111. 126. The equipment check will be the final prelude to a full season of Saturday night racing, which begins April 26 at the Kenosha County Speedway in Wilmot, Wis. Among top local drivers who will be on hand to exhibit their racing machines, talk to fans and sign autographs are Dick Aissen, Danny Brown, Bill Kelley, Sid Norton, Dave Madsen and Jerome Reinhard, all of McHenry; Randy Amettis and Ron Bergsma of Rich mond; Dave Bliss of Huntley; Jim Moulis of Johnsburg; Roger Hagi of Lake Villa; Pop Kline of Genoa City, Wis.; and Duke Norton of Wonder Lake. Second Season Try For Lake Geneva Stocks A sunny but snow dotted weekend assured the 1975 opening of stock car racing this Saturday night, April 19, at the Lake Geneva Raceway. Plans to open on April 5 were cancelled due to the heavy spring snow storm on April 2 and traces were still on the track last weekend but are gone now leaving little doubt about this Saturday night's action. Most people overvalue compliments and undervalue constructive criticism. (Maybe they heard about our pony days) - And, maybe a try at water skiing? Decisions, decisions! Almost witnessed a young driver hit a woman who was crossing Green St., on the WALK signal. Another driver who was going to make a right turn on the red without coming to a stop. Of course, we should forgive him. He had a little gal sitting beside him and that will sometimes take a fellow's mind off his driving. Make every acre count DEKALB XhZZ A hybrid you can depend on. THE PICK OFF ATTEMPT . . . fails as the Tiger first baseman misses the throw from the pitcher. This play netted the Warriors their first run as Cristy scored from third and Wlckenkamp, the intended victim, scrambled to second base. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Warriors Defeat Lake Forest In Doubleheader By Dick Rabbitt Coach Ken Swanson's McHenry Warriors opened their long awaited baseball season with a double win over visiting Lake Forest. The scores were 4 to 0 and 8 to 4. In the first game Dave Wickencamp went the route allowing 3 hits, as he hurled a shutout. He also aided his own cause getting 2 of the Warriors 4 hits in the game. He had fine support behind him as the Warriors played errorless ball. In the nightcap Tommy Ludwig given a 2 run lead in the first inning hung in there to poast an 8 to 4 win. Ray Williams senior shortstop had a triple, as the Warriors scored 4 runs in the top of the third in ning. Tomorrow the Warriors host Cary Grove, and on Saturday travel to Mundelein for a double header in the North Suburban Conference. List Best Pitchers, Hitters In Baseball By Pete Fritchie LAKELAND, FLA.-After twenty-two years on the field, number six, Al Kaline, is no longer belting them out for the Detroit Tigers. But he was at Lakeland the other day, in uniform, in structing young Tiger hit ters. How does it feel not to be getting ready to play, and travel? "Great," Kaline said. "I've got a number of jobs, one with Ford, others representing lines of prod- . ucts. I'm glad to stay in baseball to an extent. "Jim Campbell offered me a job. He gave me three choices, in fact. I could coach, start out in the or ganization, learning the business, or do this--help teach hitting for a brief pe riod in spring training. "I might some day go into the organization. I would want to have a future, some thing I think is challenging. But right now I'm glad to get away from the travel for at least a year and I like working with hitters." Speaking of hitters, Al named the best he had seen in his twenty-two years in the American League. "Ted Williams was the greatest hitter I ever saw- no question about it. There was also Mickey Mantle and Carl Yastrzemski--and Dick Allen. They were as good as I saw in our league." Asked who the great clutch players, team sparkplugs, were, who stood out in his memory, Kaline named four. "Bobby Richardson was always trying to beat you, some way. Late in the game it was hard to get him out. Nellie Fox was another one. He'd get hit by the ball, if necessary, to get on base, to get a run in. He went a long way with his ability. "Harmon Killebrew is really a great free-swinger. I hated to see him come up late in a game. And Jackie Jensen for a couple of years won a lot of games for Bos ton." The greatest pitchers he faced from 1953 through 1974? "I'd have to say Bob Lemon was one, and Early Wynn and also Herb Score. Whitey Ford was another. Of today's pitchers Nolan Ryan in is that category and I'd have to name Mel Stot- tlemeyer, also Louis Tiant of Boston. They were al ways tough to hit against, consistently so. They were tops."
