SUPPLEMENT TO McHENRY PLA1NDEALER-PAGE 14-FftIDAY, APRIL 18, 1975 Shop around for best roof buys; then decide You evaluate the pur chase of a new automobile by reviewing its cost, life expectancy, trade-in val ue, reputation for quality, color, and extra features. And, when you plunk down the money, you tell yourself that you've made the best possible choice because you took the time to comparioon-shop. You were able to evaluate the products available and es timate the car's cost to you . . . over the years you drive it. You should look at re- roofing your home in the same way ... by shopping around. You can judge quality, determine what the new roof will cost an nually (divide the total cost by the life of the guarantee), and evaluate the impact the roof will have on the value of your home in the event you de cide to sell it. Too, overall appearance, color selec tion and special features like a textured "wood- look" or a Class A fire rat ing may influence your decision. The Certain-teed Home Institute reports that often today's homeowner doesn't fully appreciate the pos sibilities offered in asphalt roofing. Many people set tle for a lightweight shin gle guaranteed for 10-15 years, because they're sim ply not aware that prod ucts are available with guarantees of up to 25 years. They may be un aware that some products offer texture and natural hues which help a home blend into its surround ings. "Today's asphalt shin gles offer the homeowner such a wide selection of textures and colors to en hance nearly every archi tectural design," notes Sharon Kay Ritchie, di rector of the Home Insti tute. "Certain-teed's Hall mark shangle is a perfect example ... it looks like a shake, yet offers all the benefits of a rugged, heavyweight asphalt shin gle. It is guaranteed for 25 years, comes in a range of muted, earthy tones, Whats, wheres and whys of laundering If new laundry appli ances are part of your remodeling plan, remem ber they represent an im portant purchase, so it's wise to learn as much as you can before you buy. Because a washer or dryer can be expected to last 10 to 15 years, it's important to choose equip ment that will serve your current needs and those that may arise in the future. First, decide what size you need. Do you want large-capacity appliances that can handle loads up to twice the size washed by most homemakers? Or is space a problem? If so, you may prefer a compact laundry center that takes up only 24Vi inches of floor space. Do you like to determine all of the laundering con ditions yourself?* There is equipment that lets you do that. But for more precise results, consider truly automatic machines. The Lady Kenmore dryer is an example. This unique dryer remembers how you like your clothes dried, and repeats those results every time -- regardless of load size, fabric content or humidity in the air -- without your changing the setting. To make that big laun dry job easier, the match ing large-capacity Lady Kenmore washer has 10 wash cycles. At the press of a button, you can have the proper laundering conditions for all wash- ables, from hardy cottons to delicate knits. The knit cycle has thor ough yet gentle laundering action that helps prevent pulling or snagging of delir.at.P parmpnt.c that FERTILIZE I0R LASTING 6RIIN! \ I I I 1 I I I i 1 I I _ I % Green Vie HI., ask somebody who knows! 0 \ * Comparable savings on the smaller size. If your water supply is a problem, a variable water level control that allows you to select exactly the right amount of water for any size load may be im portant. These are just some of the features that can make your life easier. When shopping, also consider the store where you will buy your new laundry equip ment. The average family moves every five years, so make sure you can get service no matter where you might move. You're buying important appliances and you'll have them for years. So decide on the basis of your own family's needs and you'll make the right decision. Put your money in hot water Many people are un aware that the water heat er is the second or third largest user of energy in the home, after the fur nace and kitchen range, or gas incinerator, if there is one. The homeowner con templating installation of a new water heater would be well advised to consider pioneered portable air conditioning with the Carry Cool in 1972, now offers portable air condi tioners in two capacities -- the original 4,000-BTUH size and a new 5,000-BTUH model. The new larger-capacity model weighs less than 50 pounds, features two cool ing and two fan-only speeds, and a 10-position thermostat. While toting an air conditioner from room to room may not be as con venient as having a unit in every window, Carry Cool air conditioners have built-in handles to en hance portability. They can be plugged into any ade quately-wired, grounded household circuit. one that has its own en ergy source, according to the National Home Im provement Council, be cause it is more economi cal since the main furnace can be turned off in sum mer. It is also more effi cient in terms of fuel con sumption. Where utilities have es tablished special rates for off-hour heating, electric water heaters have begun to enjoy a certain popu larity. Water is heated during off-peak hours and stored for later use in in sulated tanks. Gas water heaters come in a wide range of sizes and types, and are built to resist water corrosion. All types feature the fast "re covery" of gas which per mits them to serve sever al bathrooms as well as kitchen appliances. Some models have con trols which automatically vary the heating flame to the household demands for hot water. This pro vides additional economy as well as extra capacity for heavy demands. Another way to save mon ey on replacement windows is to install them yourself.
