SUPPLEMENT TO McHENRY PLAINDEALER-PAGE 22-FRIDAY, APRIL 18, 1975 Restyling Leaves Kitchen Shipshape Antique collectors are an unusual breed. They'll glad ly drive several hundred miles to a flea market in the country where they'll spend hours sifting through what others might regard as "junk" searching for a "col lector's item." Some people looking for a house are like that. They may spend months inspect ing homes until they find what they are looking for-- an old, but sturdily built home with possibilities. Lib eral applications of time, money and imagination of ten turn these places "from the ridiculous to the sub lime." An example can be found in an older home on New Jersey's shore. After 50 years, the home looked drab --both indoors and out. The new owner decided on exten sive modernization within the framework of keeping a seaside cottage atmosphere. The kitchen remodeling illustrates the dramatic changes that resulted. Be fore modernization, poor kitchen design was in evidence everywhere. The kitchen area consisted of three tiny rooms joined by narrow doorways. An old sink, exposed radiator and built-in wall cabinet just added to the ugliness. Remodeling combined two of the small rooms in the kitchen area into one large, functional kitchen with plenty of storage space, in cluding an island with countertop space for meal preparation and the latest appliances. Two old, double - hung windows, which were hard to reach and difficult to open, were replaced with three Andersen wood case ment windows with double- pane insulating glass. Casements were chosen because they are easy to open and close, especially In such hard to reach locations as over kitchen sinks. Case ments also help disperse heat and cooking odors be cause they open 90 degrees to provide top - to - bottom ventilation. 1 This Spring Beat the high cost of upkeep! t • - - yyjrjt IMS GUARAWY APPiftS 10 All AWACCtSSOHS *01IHSIAIIANOT Made by Reynolds Metals Company-a name you can trust Look at these outstanding cost-saving and time-saving features: • Made of tough alloy, quality Reynolds Aluminum • 12 traditional colors • Baked & bonded Dupont Acrylic paint • Goes on over old siding of any kind • Won't chip, peel, flake or blister Call today for the Color Coordinated story. Do-It-Yourself and Save State_ -&P- Phone_ It wasn't too long ago that do-it-yourself for the aver age homeowner was limited to replacing a broken win- do wpane or a worn washer in the faucet of the kitchen sink. With inflation chipping away at the disposable in come of the average Ameri can homeowner, however, he has often found his skills as a handyman growing in pro portion to hikes in the cost- of-living. Many do it yourselfers have improved their compe tence with tools to the point where they can take on more involved projects ranging from finishing a basement to adding a room. Though he'll probably need a helper, another home improvement project a rea sonably skilled do it your- selfer can undertake is the installation of a gliding door. Detailed instructions on how to install a gliding door are contained in a new Andersen wood casement windows are equipped with a detachable operator arm that allows the sash to open fully and makes the exterior glass surface easy to reach for washing. Factory-ap plied weatherstripping seals out drafts and assures snug closure. booklet produced by Ander sen Corporation, manufac turer of Andersen Windo- walls and Perma-Shield brand windows and gliding doors. The "Easy Gliding Door Installation" pamphlet in cludes a glossary of terms and a list of tools required. It covers such subjects as preparation of the rough op ening, installation of gliding doors in masonry or brick veneer walls and painting and staining wood gliding doors. The instructions ap ply to both primed wood and Perma - Shield vinyl - clad gliding doors manufactured by Andersen. Nature 9s Image Is 'In9 Two current trends in the residential construction in- dustxy are reflected in the growing use of preflnlshed building components and In the movement to materials with the "natural look." Forward-looking building product manufacturers have found ways to take advan tage of both trends. A leading manufacturer of precision-made windows and gliding doors--Andersen Corporation -- Is a case in point. The Bayport, Minn., concern has added a new Terratone color to its Per ma-Shield line of vinyl-clad wood windows. A | R [ 11 3729 West Elm Street McHenry, Illinois 60050 Terratone is a rustic, earthtone color that blends with both stained and natu ral materials and is espe cially suitable for contempo rary-style residential archi tecture. Perma-Shield- win dows in the new Terratone color are available at lumber dealers and building supply stores in casement, awning, casement bow and casement angle bay styles. Andersen also has a complete line of Perma-Shield windows and gliding doors in white. All Perma-Shield units have a rigid vinyl sheath over preservative - treated wood core sash and frames. Factory - applied weather- stripping keeps fuel-robbing air infliltration well below recognized industry stand ards. Double - pane insulating glass, standard in Perma- Shield, ends the bothersome chore of storing, painting and changing storm sash. And, since there are only two surfaces of glass to clean with insulating glass instead of the four with storm sash over single- glazed windows, window washing time is cut in half. Window Function Is Vital If replacing some old win dows is on your home im provement schedule this year, don't make the mis take of substituting one set of inferior windows for an other. This could happen if you settle for "bargain base ment" replacement windows. Because the windows you choose are likely to be around for a good many years, other factors besides their inital cost should be considered. Quality-built windows that perform well, says Andersen Corporation of Bayport, Minn., may cost less to own over the long term than inexpensive, run- of-the-mill units. The manufacturer of Per ma-Shield vinyl-clad wood windows and gliding doors says good quality windows save homeowners money in several ways, including fuel conservation, weathertight- ness and low-maintenance. They may also affect the re sale value of a home. Precision - made windows, such as Andersen's Perma- Shield units, have factory- applied weatherstripping to reduce costly air infiltration. Double - pane insulating glass -- standard in Perma- Shield windows -- conserves fuel by reducing heat loss through the glass areas. It also eliminates the cost of separate storm sash. To understand another's problems approach them from his circumstances, not yours-. .
