PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, APRIL 18, 1975 Georgia's Golden Isles Paradise For Tourists (By Father William O. Manner, rector emeritus of Holy Comforter church. Episcopal, Kenilworth) Off the coast of Georgia lie a goodly number of islands They are not far out - indeed some are reached by a causeway. They are known as Georgia's Golden Isles. Between them and the actual coast are great sweeping beautiful marshes. Here the water is salty, the long, hardy reedy grasses undulate in the sweeping breezes. They are alive with Our Private BANQUET ROOM is now open for yoar inspection! Three<?of the Islands are inhabited and can be reached by road: St. Simon's, Jekyll's and Sea Island. The rest are privately owned and off limits to all but the owner's families and guests. In the early days these Isles belonged to Spain. Later, as Spain and France took over the Gulf Coast and Florida, England recognized the need for a protection against en croachment north along the Atlantic Coast and in 1733 organized the colony of Georgia. TA it came James Oglethorpe as founder, governor and general. To it also came John and Charles Wesley. Christ church on St. Simon's Island grew from their ministry. On St. Simon's island the British built a town, Fredrica. To protect it and to give a strong southern defense against King Philip V of Spain they erected Fort Fredrica. The Spaniards were finally driven out following the Battle of Bloody Marsh in 1742, fought near Fredrica. McHenry Kart Park *>«»*•« Wrs OPEN-WEEKENDS ONLY! ! It was to St. Simon's island the Hanners came to spend a pair of quiet days before starting the trek back North. Our hotel was on the beach. Before us, across a wide and lonely beach, rolled the Atlantic. Behind us was all of St. Simon's, Sea and Jekyll Islands to explore. We were comfortable and well fed. We were only a few miles from the through-roads near Brunswick, still we were in a different world. Our island was peaceful, silent, serene with the "world" only a half dozen miles away. A feature of the South that always holds Northerner's attention is the great sprawling live oaks trailing their Spanish moss. This moss is not a moss, nor a parasite. It hangs in long whiskery strands that move with the breeze. It is an air plant and draws its sustenance from the atmosphere. Old Christ church dates from the 1730's. It still stands amongst its ancient trees. The present church building is the third and dates from the 1880's. The dogwood drifts in snowflaky profusion. It was airily beautiful this year. It seems almost to sift before your eyes. This tree, like our elms, is afflicted with a dread blight. The azaleas, as everywhere in the South, splatter color from light pinks through reds and white. In clumps they are massed for attacks upon your eyes and mind. This is a season when the South is magnificent and holds you deeply. Azaleas lasts only a short time. When you have it with you from south to, north you "follow" its triumphal Carthage Chamber Singers To Appear At Abbey Church The Chamber Singers from Carthage college in Kenosha progress with the balms of spring. Christ church 's annual tour of homes and gardens fell just after we moved on. The privilege it is to see these homes is only too plain. The mind, as the eye, is nourished with the beauty of homes on every side. Jekyll island was a rich man's hideaway for many years. Now it is state-owned. The homes of the Rockefellers, the Cranes, the Carnegies are now open to the public. You used to be able to rent land on which to build-but to buy-- no! The Jekyll island club com pleted in 1888, was till 1938, the most private and exclusive club in America. Here a few motels are allowed-fine ones-but they may not even alter a sand dune to give a "view" of the sea. This is a policy with which I am in strict accord. There are places where you can stay, as we did. But they are not numerous. This is a quite historic, beautiful place. There are small communities and schools. There are churches of all kinds, though here the Methodist and Episcopal parishes are more prominent, the fruit of the Wesley brothers. Visit these islands some time. It will bring peace to your soul. Slow down! I was just about to say there wasn't a fly in the ointment-- but there was! We have gotten no response to our request for volunteers. We need people to work in our office. This would be for just one day a week for four hours. Our primary request for volunteers is for people to house an animal for us until it can be adopted. We do" not as yet have a shelter in the county, so the strays must be kept at volunteer homes. Helping Paws will see that the animal has its shots and will pay for its food. If you adopt an animal from this column, a donation is requested. Adoption papers should be filled out at the time of adoption, for your protection. The Helping Paws office is open week days from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Call 815- 459-2641. Plan Vacation Bible School Enthusiasm is mounting at Shepherd of the Hills church, 404 N. Green street, McHenry, as final plans take shape for Vacation BiHIe school. Classes, held daily from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. week days from July 28 to Aug. 8, will center around the theme, "And God says 'I promise'." It helps learners see that God is trustworthy in all He says, has kept His promises down through the centuries, and continues to do so today. Although emphasis is the same throughout the school, there are six different levels designed to meet the needs and interests of different age groups from 3 years to young adults. Even the tiny tots will love to sing and act out various songs led by Bonnie Schopp in the all- school opening. Discussion groups, Bible study, oriented crafts, and supervised recreation as well as a refresh ment period are scheduled daily. Pastor Schneider cordially invites all the members of the community to participate in what promises to be th^ best Bible School to date. He's also hinted that there will be quite an enjoyable closing program that children would be very disappointed if they missed. Call Mrs. W. (Helen) Hunt or Carol Nelson at 385-7263 or the church office to register children free. A free-will of fering will be received at the opening service to help defray the cost of the school.
