r - McHenry County Will Walk For Bald Eagles On Sunday, April 27, McHenry county residents concerned about the future of the Bald Eagle in Illinois will go for a walk! They'll be seeking donations for the purchase of an eagle refuge in the bot­ tomlands of the Mississippi river valley in Illinois. The county effort, to secure donations, is being sponsored by the McHenry County Junior Defenders. The Walk for the Eagles will begin at two dif­ ferent locations. The'longest distance will start at the new courthouse in Woodstock and proceed to McHenry down Rt. 120. from McHenry, the walkers will walk south to Veterans Acres in Crystal Lake. This walk will begin at 9 a.m. At 11 a.m., a second shorter walk will begin at McHenry West campus high school in McHenry and travel south down the Crystal Lake blacktop to Veterans Acres. After the walk, the hungry stomachs will be fed, thanks to the Junior Defenders, who will provide food. The county effort is in con­ junction with the Illinois Department of Conservation and the Illinois Audubon society. Gov. Walker on Jan. 30 proclaimed April 21-27 as "Bald Eagle Appreciation" week. The Governor called for "a state­ wide walk to assist in raising funds to preserve these im­ portant river bottomlands for the Bald Eagle." He also urged "school groups, other associations and all Illinoisans to participate...to insure the future of our national bird." The Illinois Audubon society has been designated a sponsor of this program and the Illinois chapter of the Nature con­ servancy will assist in locating and purchasing the necessary lands. The Illinois Nature conservancy has indicated an immediate need for at least 660 acres along the Mississippi river as an eagle refuge area. Nearly 800 eagles now spend the winter in this area. Bald Eagles, symbol of prestige and majesty of this land, have suffered greatly because of man and are now considered an endangered species. Bald Eagles once- nested in Illinois but no longer do. Every winter, ap­ proximately 500-800 eagles concentrate along the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. Fish is the eagle's chief diet, so it is obvious why these birds associate along major rivers. Review Legislation Concerning Heating, Plumbing Industry Legislation affecting the construction industry in general and the plumbing and heating industry in particular will be reviewed at the annual Legislative night of the Plumbing and Heating Con­ tractors association of Lake and McHenry counties Friday, April 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, Mundelein. Participating in the program will be many, including 32nd District Senator Jack Schaffer of Crystal Lake, State Reps. Thomas J. Hanahan Jr., of McHenry, Cal Skinner, Jr., of Crystal Lake and R. Bruce Waddell of Dundee, representing the 33rd district. Legislation slated for discussion ranges from ap­ prentice training in the con­ struction industry to Work­ men's Compensation bills and includes proposals for changes in the state purchasing act, certification of plumbing contractors, bills related to the hiring and utilization of minorities and women in the construction industry, changes in the Mechanics Lien laws, and licensing of well-diggers. Cal Skinner, Jr. (R-Crystal Lake)' testified at the Joliet hearing on Health Service Area designations for northeastern Illinois.
