PUNCH LINE O F T H E W E E K OOTA G EMI US HAS ITS LIMITATIONS, BUT STUPIDITY KNOWS NO BOUNDS' - Qualified voters who do not wish to participate in a party primary but who want to vote on a proposition or in a general election conducted at the same time may have separate voting booths or electronic devices, if a measure sponsored by state Sen Jack Schaffer, R-Cary. becomes law. The measure is part of a package of bills Schaffer in­ troduced to amend the Election code and reduce confusion resulting from required multiple ballots for use with electronic voting devices. One bill deletes provisions, requiring a separate ballot card when electronic voting devices are used for judicial retention propositions. Another allows the use of voting machines or electronic devices for marking con­ stitutional amendment ballots and ballots calling for a con­ stitutional convention. Two of the three bills have already passed the Senate to the House of Representatives and the third is at passage stage in the Senate. Schaffer commented: "Many Illinois counties in­ stituted electronic voting systems to eliminate confusion in voting and save time in tallying ballots. "But requiring a second ballot for judicial retention and a third paper ballot for con­ stitutional propositions leaves the voter with a handful of ballots and the task of deciding which ballot is used for each question. It requires election judges to spend hours tallying constitutional ballots. The multiple ballots are costly and defeat the whole purpose of electronic voting. "The bill allowing in­ dependents to vote on im­ portant nonpartisan issues like the Regional Transportation Authority, however, is the most important of these three. "If a person now wants to vote in a general election held "This bill will allow county boards, municipal boards of elections or county boards of elections to provide separate booths tir devices for people who do not wish to participate in party primaries. "Independent voters would not have to use partisan voting booths in order to vote on im­ portant issues affecting their lives." 4-H NEWS LINCOLN CLOVERLEAVES The Lincoln Cloverleaves 4-H club held its monthly meeting at the James C. Bush elementary school April 14. The meeting was called to order by Vice-President Betty Lang at 7:30 p.m. Andy Akins took attendance and reported thirty- eight members were present and eleven absent. The American pledge was led by Kurt Mueller and the 4-H pledge by Billy Lang. Billy Lang, club treasurer, reported there was a balance of $225 in the bank A vote was taken to make a donation of $15 to the Johnsburg Rescue squad in appreciation for their visit to present a demonstration at the last meeting. Under old business, Robin Roland gave a report on the club^bake sale. A profit of $57 was realized from the sale. Danny Miller presented a report on the federation meeting and Alison Boyer told about the Sew It All Up clinic.
