Twice Told Tales THE HAPPY TIMES - The lion tamer, clowns and cotton candy are all "musts" for a circus. When the McHenry Choral club goes on stage Saturday and Sunday, May 3 and 4, in West campus auditorium at 8:15, they will all be there, plus many more. "The Happy Times" is the theme for the club's Spring program. After a formal presentation by the singers, they will be seen and heard in two costumed sections, on the circus and the other, a market scene. Tickets may be purchased from any member or at the door the night of the performances. They are good for either night. FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 30, 1925) At high noon on Wednesday, April 25,1900, Michael J. Walsh and Miss Joanna Doherty stood at the foot of the altar at the St. Patrick's church in this city where they were pronounced man and wife by the late Rev. P.M. O'Neill, at that time pastor of St. Patrick's. Last Saturday marked the twenty- fifth anniversary. Dr. Henry Freund,. Waukegan optometrist, has rented the store room between the Brda hardware store and Carey Electric shop on Green street and will conduct an office at that location. Dr. Freund has been in the optical business for a period of twenty years. A Star touring car, owned by Ambrose Schaefer, local drayman, was stolen from in front of the McHenry garage on Pearl street last Wednesday night and so far no trace of the machine has been found. William Pries, proprietor of the Central Meat Market and Grocery, closed a deal in Chicago this morning whereby the National Tea company will take over the grocery depart­ ment of the Central market next Monday morning. Mr. Pries will retain the meat department which will open up as a cash market. Members of the M.E. church choir surprised E.A. Koerner at the home of Mrs. Ada Bobb, Waukegan road. A dinner was served at 6:30. During the dinner C.H. Duker presented Mr. Koerner with a walnut baton with silver mounting on which his initials were engraved, a gift from the choir. Supt. Ernest Clark and Jack Bjorkland of the sales force of the American Terra Cotta and Ceramic company at Terra Cotta have tendered their resignations and will go into business for themselves. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 2, 1935) Supt. C.H. Duker has been hired for another year as superintendent of the McHenry Community high school and grade school and all teachers were offered contracts for another year at recent meetings. The grade school board hired Mrs. Alfred Richardson as teacher of the fourth grade to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Miss Booth because of illness. Mark I. Oster, in­ ternationally known opera star and authority on vocal music, became a resident of McHenry Shalimar. Mr. Oster has had a distinguished career in the operatic centers of the world. He has sung the leading baritone roles in all the great opera houses of Europe and America. He will open a branch studio at McHenry to enable those who wish to take up vocal culture for opera oratoria, concert or radio work. The fiftieth anniversary of the American Telephone and Telegraph company, in­ corporated in 1885, was ob­ served Sunday with a unique radio program of interest to the 250,000 employees of the Bell system besides all users of telephone service. The local fire department extinguished a burning automobile Wednesday noon on Route 20 in McHenry as it was being towed to its destination at Geneva. The McHenry County Council of the American Legion now has 737 paid up members which shows that record has been set as the county Legion has passed its last membership of 698 and also its quota of 7?8 members set for this year. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 11, 1950) The summer home of the W. Melhorns on East River road, southeast of McHenry, was almost completely destroyed by flames Sunday morning, only the frame remains. Mrs. Virginia Hunter of Rt. 2, McHenry, was seriously in­ jured in an accident when she was hurled from the auto in which she was riding when the car door suddenly flew open. A lingering illness resulted in the death, May 7, in Sherman hospital, Elgin, of Mrs. Malissa Belle Abendroth, 61. She was well known in this community where she formerly made her home. J.M. Stangerone of EmeraTd Park has opened a new business on Riverside drive known as Riverside Tile and Cement company. He is combining floor and wall tile work with his cement business which he has carried on here for the past six years. The first drowning of this year in this vicinity occurred Saturday when John Gist, 47, of Chicago, drowned after slip­ ping and falling from the dam while fishing. Plans are progressing rapidly for the 1950 Marine Day in McHenry. One of the most popular parts of Marine Day is selection of a lovely queen to reign over festivities. Last year Miss Patricia Gilmore topped the field of ten finalists. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 6, 1965) Michael Slotowski of Wonder Lake and his passenger, Sandra Slotowski, were injured in an accident on Griswold Lake road when a rear wheel on his car locked resulting in the car going out of control and sliding into a ditch and coming to rest on its top. At the city council meeting Monday night final steps were taken to install chlorination facilities for treatment at the sewage disposal plant. A contract was awarded to Lakeland Construction Co., the low bidder. A service to high school young people is being offered by the local high school in the form of summer school ex­ tending from June 21 to July 30. A beautiful double ring wedding ceremony was solemnized in St. Mary's church, May 1, when Mr. Ben J. Chelini claimed as his bride Miss Laura Charlotte Mork. Rev. Fr. Eugene Baumhofer officiated at the nuptial ceremony. Lawrence T. Strandquist, Lakeland Park, died April 29, at the Veterans hospital, New Orleans, La. Mr. Strandquist, 66, was born in Sweden. He was a retired Illinois Bell Telephone company employee. The purpose of the Citizen's committee is to propose and consolidate additional articles and opinions from all groups in the McHenry county area into the proposed Comprehensive Zoning ordinance which involves unincorporated areas of the county.
