Hosier, a senior from McHenry, Monday (April 21) was named the recipient of the Mid American Conference Scholar- Athlete Award at Northern Illinois University. The annoucement of Hosier's selection for the MAC honor was made by Northern Illinois athletic director Dr. Robert J. Brigham. Hosier will join scholar-athletes from nine other MAC schools to be feted at the 1975 Mid-American Conference Spring Sports Championships May 15-17 at Western Michigan. A two-year varsity let- terman, Hosier led the Huskies in pass receiving last fall with 27 receptions for 375 yards (13.9 yards-per-catch) and one touchdown. "Gary was the most sure- handed tight end we've had here,"praised Northern Illinois head coach Jerry Ippoliti. "He was a clutch receiver that pulled out some games for us." One in particular came last season when Hosier caught passes for 12 and 13 yards in a last second drive that produced a game-winning field goal that topped Marshall, 20-17. Hosier, a 6-2, 220-pounder, finished the Marshall game with eight catches for 106 yards and a first-half touchdown. For that performance, Hosier was nominated for the MAC Player of the Week. A clutch performer in the classroom, Hosier has a 3.04 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.0 scale as a Physical Education major and Safety Education minor. A member of Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honorary society, Hosier made the Dean's List four con secutive semesters. Hosier is an active member of the Physcial Education Majors and Minors Club and, in the summer months, works with children in day camps. "Gary's a gentleman on and off the field," Ippoliti added. "He's a polite, generous young man. An All-America gen tleman in every respect. On the field, he was extremely in telligent and read defenses extremely well." Hosier, 21, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Velmont Hosier, 1217 West River Terrace Drive in McHenry. Warriors Defeat Barrington 4 To 3 By Dick Rabbitt Coach Ken Swanson's McHenry high Warriors are still in the fight of it for the North Suburban crown. On Tuesday at McCarcken field the Warriors came from behind to defeat the Barrington Broncos 4 to 3. It was a big win for the young Warriors as they had to defeat the Barrington jinx that had plagued them for several years. To put more frosting on the cake the Warriors defeated Barrington's number one pitcher, Rob Simon, one of the finest hurlers in the state. Trailing 1 to 0 in the second inning, the Warriors with one out pulled the old double steal. With McCafferty on third and Jaskowiak on first, Frank Shellenback Barrington's fine all around star, threw the ball into center field, McCafferty scored from third, and Jaskowiak, with alert base running scored from first to put the Warriors in the lead 2 to 1. Coming into the last of the 7th the Warriors trailed 3 to 2 as the Broncos seored 2 unearned runs in the top of the 7th. Williams walked, Urbanski grounded out, Williams taking second. Christy walked, and Wickenkamp followed with a base on balls to load the bases. Williams scored on a pass ball, and then Tommy Ludwig had an infield hit, the Warriors only hit of the day, to drive in Christy with the winning run. It was a happy group of Warriors who picked up the bats and balls after the game, and left them with a 5 to 1 record in the conference, still trailing Zion Benton, who defeated Lake Forest 3 to 0 for a 7 and 0 record for the year. These Cub fan pals of ours have reminded us daily about the baseball picture. Met Mike Wieser (not that we were looking for him) Tuesday afternoon. "Cubs Win. Sox Lose," said Mike, and then he laughed Before the day was over it was: "Sox Win. Cubs lose." We couldn't find Mike. Somebody mailed us a newspaper clipping. The letter was addressed to "Honorary Chairman - McHenry Chapter of Loyal Chicago Cub Fans." Long title. Some honor! SPORTS EDIT0RJ the National League will be prohibited from finishing ahead of all other franchises within its respective division or league, regardless of how many teams compete in that division or how bad they may be." And this is what Don wrote: Dear Earl: You probably read this ar ticle but tell me, can this be true. Makes me feel like I 've been fighting the front office for years. Maybe we are just a place for Major leaguers to break into the game. Don't sell that Cub front office short, Don. They traded Ron Santo to the Sox. That one will go down in history. Wouldn't know how his name was lost in our last column That mailman who has great fun giving us the business about our White Sox is Larry Winkelman. You know Larry! He looks like Dick Butkus' little brother. THEME SONG -- Arnold Rauen: How tired I am. Nobody knows how tired I am. McHenry Wins Second By Dick Rabbitt The McHenry High tennis team under Coach Gary Gray dropped a 5 to 0 match to powerful Barrington last week. Barrington earlier in the week defeated Bettendorf, Iowa, breaking a dual string of 77 straight matches for the Iowa team. Last season Bettendorf won the Iowa state tourney. The young inexperienced McHenry team played well, but could not cope with the Bron cos. Terry Reilly lost in 3 sets, and Greg Worm and Kenne Ludwig lost a heartbreaking tie breaker in the doubles. Dowdle of Barrington defeated Joe Johnson 6-1, 6-0. Olson defeated Randy Blankenhorn 6-0, 6-2. Burton beat Reilly 2-6, 6-0, 6- 3. DOUBLES Gospodarek and Miller defeated Craig Smith and Jeff Boyer 6-0, 6-1. Wood and Romei defeated Ludwig and Worm 6-3, 7-6. Rick Talley's widely read column carried the following and Don Hones sent it to us from way out and up there in Michigan: "The Chicago franchise of (McH), Rudolph (McH), Dimopoulos (McH), Pfau (McH) Discus - 104'-8 - Reinbolt (McH), Teneylk (Ant), Harr (Ant), Rad (McH) Long Jump - 18'-7 - Useman (McH), Weingart (McH), James (Ant), Murgatroyd (McH) Pole Vault - 9'-0 - Boernhoeft (McH), Ogden (Ant), Dostal (McH), Aldrin (War) High Jump - 5'-2 - Klapperich (McH), Ano (Ant), Huffhines (War), Bilherz (War) Triple Jump - 34 -3 - Schiller (McH), Adams (War), James (Ant), Pilcher (Ant) Won 16 of 17 events.
