John son, speaker for Church Women United's May Fellowship day program Friday, May 2 is a very popular minister. He is known throughout the state for his work with prisoners and his creative ministry and suggested programs have won him numerous awards and positions. The Rev. Johnson is minister at Irving Park United Methodist church, but with the help and support of his congregation spends a great deal of his time in prison ministry. Hours are spent each week at the prison in coun seling; he ministers to the families of these incarcerated; and some of his most creative programs and helps continue with the prisoners after their release as he secures assistance from individuals, churches and communities to 'adopt' individual released prisoners so that complete adjustment to freedom might be successful. Mr. Johnson has most recently been appointed director of Ministry of Criminal Justice program, and his ideas and training of inmates has been called by the director of Illinois prisons, "the best planned and most exciting I have seen." One of the programs just initiated at Joliet Prison is the Educational G r o w t h O p p o r t u n i t i e s program, which prepare men and women for entry into a college or university. The Rev. Johnson received nation-wide publicity last December when the newser- vice picked up the story of "Pastor gets his cards out early". Due to some oversight the cards usually provided for the prisoners during the Christmas season were not made available. The director of Public relations had never met Rev. Johnson, but knowing of him, called him to ask if he could help. It took him less than a month to solve the problem to secure the 50,000 needed cards - - allotted for mailing to in mates' family and friends. He secured the assistance of an ex- offender, now a director of an Art studio, to make the designs; a paper company in j33Srornf535roBBH53EEEtSECH!BSHBE PICTURE FRAMES CUSTOM sizes MADE TO ORDER STANDARD SIZE FRAMES IN STOCK MAT BOARD, WHITES & COLORED MATS CUT TO ORDER N0N GLARE GLASS DRY MOUNTING COMPLETE FRAMING SERVICE & SUPPLIES MAIN PAINT 3819 W. Ethel and Clyde Bailey were in charge of the Program at the April Meeting which was the "Seventh Re-Run" for Ruth and John Godtfredsen's fine programs. It was strictly a fun program - with A1 Mullere telling funny stories, - John playing the accordion, - Ruth singing and leading the group singing, - and games prepared by Ruth with appropriate prizes; also a beautiful poem read by Mae Stinespring. Everyone joined in the festivities and had a very joyous evening. The next meeting will be on Saturday, May 10 at 6 p.m. at the church; and all members of the church fifty years old (or older) are invited to come out and enjoy this great fellowship. Hockford supplied the paper, at a reduced cost (paid for by another friend through the denomination). The use of a priftt shop and assistance by an inmate at Pontiac Correctional center who the Rev. Johnson had transferred to the Chicago Work Release center, ac complished the print job itself. Following the publication of the story, the pastor received letters from all over the nation. He was recipient of a special "Good Samaritan" award by a church in Macon, Ga. All are invited to attend the luncheon and program Friday, May 2. The salad luncheon will begin at noon at Woodstock Presbyterian church (Tryon and Calhoun) which is located in the downtown area, just one block west and north of former Business Route 14. Following the luncheon, the beautifully written celebration service will be shared in the sanctuary of the church. The Rev. Johnson's message will be presented at this time. Celebration coordinator, Mae Stinespring of McHenry, and c e l e b r a t i o n c h a i r w o m a n , Marge Frey, are planning for a record attendance. Mrs. Stinespring has suggested that men would be as interested in the guest speaker as the women, and has made a special invitation to them - especially to the clergy in the area. Sitter service is available, but mothers are asked to telephone the area represen tative, Mrs. Kennis (Mary) Brannock, to make reser vations for the children.
