/ Sweet Adelines Go Into Competition Saturday . Sweet Adeline member rehearses for competition May 3. Those who pass the Market Place at 6:30 a.m. on Friday, May 2, may see twenty-nine members of the McHenry Sweet Adelines, clown costumes in hand, boarding a chartered bus bound for St. Louis. After three months of hard work they will be on their way to use their voices in their first try in regional com­ petition, under the direction of Mrs. Pat Gattone of McHenry. The big night is Mary 3. Clad in brilliant green, orange, and gold clown costumes and painted faces they will sing "Laugh Clown Laugh" and '.'Let Me Sing and I'm Happy". There will be twenty-eight choruses competing in regional Card Party Benefits Lung Association Work A card party benefiting the local Lung association (Christmas Seals) was held at the association office at 216 S. Throop street in Woodstock. A high score prize was awarded to each table as well as several special- prizes. Loretta Kohl, R.N., the county Tuberculosis nurse, serves on the board of directors of the Lung association and volun­ teered to sponsor the card party supplement the Christ­ mas Seal campaign. After an enjoyable afternoon of fellowship and cards, several participants suggested that this be an annual or semi-annual affair. Christmas Seal funds are used primarily to prevent and control lung disease. A few examples of Lung association action are: Alerting the public to the threat of lung disease through pamphlets, films, articles, broadcasts and speakers; Answering inquiries about treatment, rehabilitation and other services available in the community for patients with lung disease; Investing in research studies such as those exploring the cellular adjustments observed in emphysema or investigating a lung disease fatal to newborn infants: Organizing "stop smoking" clinics and special school ac­ tivities to persuade young people not to start; Working to clean up the air. This is the only nation-wide voluntary health agency concerned with air pollution. Brass Quintet In Anniversary Concert May 4 The McHenry county brass quintet will present its Fifth anniversary concert Sunday, May 4, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary's church, Woodstock. David Scherer, founder of the group, who holds a bachelor's degree from Sherwood Music school, Chicago, is band director at Lundahl Junior high school, Crystal Lake. Said Scherer, "the Mcftenry county brass quintet was founded five years ago to provide the citizens of the county an op­ portunity to hear the chamber music literature for brass in­ struments and to give its members the opportunity to learn from each other an in­ creased appreciation of brass instrument playing." William Toalson, who also plays trumpet, is band director at McHenry East high school and holds a Master's degree from the University of Kansas. East Campus Presents Spring Play May 9-10 Rehearsals are now under way at McHenry high school, East campus, for the annual Spring play. This year's Drama club production is ̂ 'Pioneer, Go *Home", a three-act comedy. Tryouts were held before Easter and the cast of twenty- two students have been hard at work for the past three weeks. "Pioneer, Go Home" was adapted by Herman Raucher who also wrote "Summer of '42." It's the hilarious story of the Kwimper family of New Jersey. The family of Pop, Toby, Holly and the unidentical twins decide to travel south one day, then run out of gas and settle on some undeveloped government land. They run into a series of characters that range from Mr. H. Arthur King, of the Department of Public Improvements (who doesn't want the Kwimpers on U.S. Government land) to the in­ famous Queen Bee, head of the local gambling syndicate. "Pioneer, Go Home" was chosen as the Spring play because it provides a wide range of roles for the freshmen and sophomore students and because it will hopefully provide an entertaining evening for its audience. The play is being directed by Dan Stanowski and Roger Zawacki, and wiH be performed May 9 and 10 at 8 p.m. at East campus. There will be a small Admission charge at the door to cover the charge for producing the play. Alcoholism-Drug Abuse Program For PWP Chapter competition this year and winners will go on to in­ ternational competition in Washington in the fall. McHenry chapter's only registered quartet, "The Happy Times Four", has double the excitement in store as they will be in competition Friday night. Members of the quartet are Darlene Navarroli, Dottie Kaufmann, Sandi Heffelfinger and Mary Jane Boelens. The four ladies have also been working hard with their coach, Jim Rother, and are ready to go out and sing their best. The songs they have selected are "Pal of My Cradle Days" and "Hello, My Baby". Mickle John Macaulay of the Community Concern for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (CCADA), Elgin, will be the featured speaker at the next general meeting of Parents Without Partners, Chapter 189. The meeting will be held at 8:30 p.m. Friday evening, May 2, at the American Legion hall on the corner of Woodstock and Oak streets in Crystal Lake. Mr. Macaulay will begin his program at 8:45 p.m. sharp. According to the CCADA, awareness of drug abuse is increasing in society. Alcohol is a "down drug" and excessive use of beverage alcohol (alcoholism) and related problems is no doubt the number one public health problem in the United States. The CCADA feels that drug abuse may be both a symptom of and the cause of other problems. Parent of children, age 3 to 5, are urged to take advantage of this free program. Registration will be at the Prairie Grove school, Rt. 176, May 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lake Region Rescue Squad In Fun Night Fun night, sponsored by the Lakes Region Rescue squad, will be held May 3 at Williams Park community house, Darrell road, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Refreshments will be sold during the evening. Proceeds will be used to buy necessary equipment for the squad. Apr. 30, May 7&14,1975) Citizen Group Works For New Zoning Ordinance Twenty-eight people representing fifteen groups or organizations have formed a citizens' committee to help develop a workable, strong ordinance in conjunction with work being conducted by a Special zoning committee of the McHenry County board. The group, called the Citizens Committee for the Com­ prehensive Zoning Ordinance, elected Arnold May, Rich­ mond, as chairperson and Mrs. Grace Jo O'Leary as vice- chairperson. Mrs. O'Leary spoke before two groups last week, discussing aspects of this Citizens committee and their role in providing input into the work of the special zoning committee. One of the goals of the group Mrs. O'Leary helped organize is to evaluate the proposed drafts of the new zoning ordinance and to offer comment. "The Citizens committee represents a broad spectrum of the county's population," she said. "Members will help design an ordinance ac­ ceptable and workable for the entire county. It brings together farmers, realtors, lawyers and environmentalists -among others-to understand each other's viewpoints and to search for a compromise. It is our function to anticipate ob­ jections and correct the proposed drafts." She spoke to the McHenry County Board of Realtors, which has three represen­ tatives on the Citizens com­ mittee. Later she lalked with school superintendents of schools within McHenry county. Three school representatives are on this 'committee. After her discussion with the school leaders one of them said, "I'm glad you've included us on the committee.
