(STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Kaneland Knights Repeat As Relay Champions Here Friday Before we got inside the door at the Longhorn, we heard the Thompson boys, Buz and George, greeting us. The Cubs had won again. Happiness! Met the Eddie Zenders for a couple of jolly greetings. Eddie did some great boat racing and promoting in these parts for several years. He has a few years age on us, but looks mighty healthy. When he started telling about all the exercise he gets, we thought it was time to move on before the little woman got any ideas about what we should do. After watching Stan Bahnsen pitch for the Sox, one can only conclude that the management shipped out some of the wrong men. CITY SIGHTS - Lee Cooney riding a bicycle up Richmond Road, with Carol jogging along beside him . Reminds us of the story of an Indian riding a pony along the trail, wife walking beside him, and being asked, "How come your wife isn't riding?" "She got no pony", was the reply. Those White Sox players, Stone, Swisher and Frailing are making the Cubs look mighty good. Have had only one reply to our mention about so many good young people being willing to work and unable to find jobs. This one wasn't good. The man Wants help-- yard work and lawn mowing. No way would we print his name since--- since he has been the victim of vandalism. We would give the name to one of those "good Kids" we mentioned-- if he wants this kind of work. Guess we didn't do so famously with our employment try. Maybe we should turn to advice to the lovelorn. A man consulted a doctor. "I've been misbehaving. Doc, and my conscience is troubling me," he complained. "And you want something that will strengthen your willpower?" asked' the doctor. "Well, no," said the fellow. "I was thinking of something that would weaken my con science." AND SO IT GOES: Gene Schaefer says, "Get rid of Stan Bahnsen" (White Sox pitcher)-- Harold Freund, the painter man, says, "It's a long season. Stick with 'em (the Sox)". -- Tom Murphy says, "Go-Go Sox". Cub fans have had their say in this column, but we'll give them more space. »-AGE 6 - ^LAINDEALER-WEDFESDAY, APRIL 30, 1975 WALSH' Forest, McHenry, Wheaton, Rochelle - 3:34.4. Coach Toby Scott's boys won first and second places in both singles and doubles. The other seven teams knew which team won the trophy when they left, but just a few McHenry fans, and relatives were on hand to witness the two championship matches which saw Dave Wilkey defeat teammate Steve Williams 10 to 7 for the singles championship. In the doubles championship, sophomores Billy Hurckes and Jim Dawson defeated freshmen Mike Gende and Phil Kent 10 to 8. In route to the singles championship, Wilkey defeated Wolf of Stevenson 10 to 7. Cyagan of Mundelein 10-2. Dee of Cary Grove 10-6, and Williams of McHenry 10-7. Jim Dawson (L) and Bill Hurckes (R) are captured in action on their way to winning the doubles competition in the first annual McHenry Sophomore tennis tournament. The tourney was held at the West Campus court last Saturday. (STAFF PHOTOS-WAYNE GAYLORD) This spring the athletic department of Marian Central Catholic High School has initiated a tennis program for the first time in the school's history. Seventeen boys are involved in the varsity and Frosh-Soph squads according to Coach Hans Rokus. "We are starting with basic fundamentals as most of the boys are very inexperienced. Only a couple of them have ever played in a competitive match." Another problem facing the young Hurricanes is lack of facilities. "We have no courts of our own so we have to use the City Park courts for the varsity and Olson Park for the Frosh- Soph and this has created some problems with having only one coach." stated Rokus. "However, the boys are working hard and are very enthusiastic." "the key to developing a sound program is to develop the underclassmen the next several years through an ex tensive summer program. At this stage the Frosh-Soph have shown a lot of improvement, whereas the Juniors have provided some fine leader ship." The Hurricanes dropped their first meet to powerful Marmion 5-0. But they came right back to record their first win ever with a 3-2 victory over West Suburban Catholic rival, Driscoll. The following make up the Hurricanes tennis roster: Varsity - Pat Stemper, Matt Hassett, John McGowan, John Conerty, Craig Mesch, John Idstein and Kevin Kelly. Frosh- Soph - Tom Carey, Pete Wilt, Mark Streit, Bruce David, Vern Musick, Mike O'Leary, Dough Schmitt, Todd Harrison, Greg Raab and Jeff Raab. EARL By Dick Rabbitt As expected Coach Ben Peterson's Kaneland Knights won the 10th Annual McHenry Relays last Friday night at McCracken Field. It was the Knights 5th straight McHenry crown. They totaled 114 pts to win easy over the McHenry Warriors who finished second with 87 pts. Six records were broken on a cool and windy night, four by Kaneland and two by Lake Forest. Hardly had the crowd of about 200 settled in their blankets and using everything imaginable to keep warm, than » the Lake Forest four mile relay i team started off the evening I with a new record in the time of * 18:46.3. Bill was here to watch his son, Leo, play first base for Barrington. Above, Bill adds his name to the lampshade that ^belongs to the Plaindealer photographer's Bear helmet lamp. When asked about the coming season, Bill thought the Bears would be contenders, especially with Jim Finks in the organization. By the way, the s o p on Bill's jacket stands for "some other place".
