A 'Crafty' Mom is a Happy Mom A gift of flowers and tak ing mom out to dinner on Mother's Day is lovely. But think also of giving her a gift of relaxation; one shell enjoy long after the flowers have wilted and the dinner menu is forgotten. It's the gift of a hobby/ craft. Never before, re ports the Hobby Industry of America, have so many women become craft con scious. They've discovered a new interest; how being 'crafty' relieves boredom and restores their sense of humor. It makes them feel proud of what they can do. And many a mother, in a PAGE 11-SUPPLEMENT TO McHENRY PLIANDEALER-MAY 2, 1975 kits, and those to decorate eggshells into conversation- making objets d'art. There are seashell projects; and those to create a stain glass terrarium, or a lamp base. f , ~ quiet hour after the family is bedded down, has found that working on a piece of macrame, doing a charm ing decoupage tray, or ev en painting by the num bers, is more conducive to I a restful night of pleasant dreams than any pill. "Hobbies", says noted psychologist Dr. Joyce Brothers, "help release ten sion by providing a means to express an individual's creative facets not released in day-to-day routine work situations." Most mothers, including working mothers, would agree that a 'day-to-day routine work situation' apt ly describes the life of a homemaker. And happily, there are craft kits to please most anyone's taste and stimu late creativity. The variety is seemingly endless. There are kits that any mother would be delighted to use to convert bottles, normal ly thrown away, into regal vases or goblets; stitchery There are art kits galore. Paint by number on can vas, wood, or on genuine ceramic pieces. There are clever large-size wall pos ters, ingeniously designed to be creatively colored -- and beautiful enough to be framed when completed. American Indian art has been adapted into a con temporary sand - painting craft, using glue and color ed sand to make intriguing decorative plaques. There are kits for design ing and making one's own jewelry; for making beads and necklaces. And endless batik and collage kits. Oth ers for making handbags, belts and accessories out of fabric or leather worthy of a Paris designer's name. And in this Bicentennial period there is a host of kits with patriotic themes; aprons, pillows, etc. in red, white and blue or Colonial calicos. And think of moth er's enjoyment in creating a collection of clothespin dolls in Revolutionary garb -- and without even need ing a sewing machine. Crafts are thrifty too. Not only because kits are most reasonably priced -- but because when they are completed, they have real value. And because moth ers function as they do, don't be surprised if when Christmas or your birthday comes around, the gift you'll be delighted to re ceive will be created from the craft kit you gave mother. I think it must be some where written, that the vir tues of mothers shall be visited on their children, as well as the sins of the fathers. -- Dickens * So for the mother's sake the child was dear, And dearer was the mother for the child. -- Samuel Taylor Coleridge it* ̂ ^ A* ̂ ^ TODAY'S MOTHER HAS THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS*-- She's got a well-fed, well-cared-for baby, and she's got her own life too, with plenty of time to surround the child with love.
