RECUPERATING AT HOME We are happy to leatn that Joe Visconti is home from the hospital and doing nicely. However, it will be a while before he is completely recovered from the injuries he received in a recent fall. He loves company so do stop in and visit, he can still talk even tho' his jaws are wired shut, of course this means he's on a liquid diet too. Just think all those milk shakes and good things that can be fixed in a blender. ABOUT TOWN The Russell Soddys of Kenosha visited Mrs. Nellie Hepburn last weekend. The Soddys took Mrs. Hepburn for a drive to Antioch where they called on Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Laursen. Callers on Sunday were Kenneth Brennan with Wendy and Wayne Brennan of Oak Lawn. Designate May 4-10 As National Goodwill Week Norman K. Dasenbrook, president of Abilities Center Goodwill Industries, has an nounced that National Goodwill week will be observed in the workshop at Rockford and also in the area Goodwill stores. This annual event will be ob served May 4 to 10. Goodwill serves the han dicapped from Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin. Guided tours will be staged from May 5 to 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the public is asked to notify the office in order to provide guides. Some churches are noting Goodwill Sunday by having clothing and housewares collections. The theme for 1975 is to "Improve the quality of life for the handicapped people." Mr. Dasenbrook reported: * ."It is our aim to help a han dicapped man or woman do more than merely survive. We help our clients find the best way to apply their abilities and to provide for themselves and their families as working members of the community." "We greatly appreciate your financial donations, con tributions of repairable items, business contracts awarded to Goodwill and purchases at Goodwill stores. Helms, a Methodist minister in Boston, Mass., Goodwill Industries of America, Inc., today is a network of fifteen non-profit organizations throughout the nation, with thirty-one similar organizations in foreign locations. Goodwill's purpose has always been to help the han dicapped become productive members of society. Today, the definition of "handicapped" has been broadened to include the socially disadvantaged, the alcoholic, the drug addict, the emotionally disturbed, the ex- convict, the elderly, educationally deprived all those who, for one reason or another, are unable to compete in the labor market. Among the services that Goodwill offers are evaluation and training for those with physical impairments or mental handicaps that limit job potential, vocational testing, counseling, guidance, spiritual aide, work experience and job placement. If in individual is unable to reach a level of proficiency necessary to work in private industry, em ployment in sheltered workshops is provided. National Goodwill week is observed each year to bring about greater public awareness of the many ways in which an individual can be helped through Goodwill, and of the many ways in which individual citizens can support the work of Goodwill. Move To End Health Board Interest Conflict Two sources within a week informed State Rep. Cal Skinner, Jr. ,(R-Crystal Lake) that staff of some mental health district boards, commonly known as 708 boards because of the number of the bill that created them, have what Skinner considers "a definite conflict of interest." The draft report of the Illinois Economic and Fiscal com mission, which evaluates community mental health centers revealed, among other things, that many of the professionals trusted to evaluate the performance of local mental health centers for 708 boards also do private counseling on the side in the very geographical area for which they are supposed to analyze the quality of mental health service. "I consider this situation ready-made for the local mental health clinic to refer patients to the person charged with evaluating its per formance, so he can pick up some money in addition to his public salary. I think it would be the rare person who could resist not giving such a mental health clinic the benefit of the doubt in such a situation," Skinner said. "Then, right in my own county, I discover my 708 board has negotiated a contract with a gentleman that will pay him $20,000 a year and allow him to do private counseling in McHenry county!" Skinner exclaimed. "I suspect my educational attainments are as high as the gentleman in question," Skinner, who holds a master's ^IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIH Why Pay More?
